It's been 1 year since I had to have Shelby put down and I'm sitting here bawling like it just happened. I still miss him so much. I took my summer clothes out of storage and there were a few little orange kitty hairs mixed in, like he was still with us. I've stopped thinking I see him out of the corner of my eye, for a while after, it was happening a lot, for my husband as well. I still talk to him sometimes and call for him when I come home from work. I miss the silly things too, like having to repeatedly scoot him off the bed when changing the sheets. I think he liked fresh sheets as much as we do. I miss his big orange and white paw sticking under the bathroom door, trying to grab at anything he could reach. Heaven forbid he couldn't see his Momma for those few minutes. I had to call my husband for help once because Shelby had hooked my pajama pants and pulled them halfway under the door and I couldn't open it with him laying there. What a little stinker he was. He was my buddy and my boy and I will always miss him.

Shelby's vet visit yesterday did not go well. He's been losing weight and not eating or drinking as much. His left kidney is enlarged and almost non-functional. He's been dignosed with calcium crystals in the kidney and pelvis. Right now I'm waiting for the vet to call with the blood work results and to discuss course of care. There's no cure, only treatment to halt further damage.
He's been my baby for 12 1/2 years and I can't bear the thought of him not being here, but I've already decided that I won't make him stay longer than he can. Even now, he's not my same beastie boy. I won't have him suffer just to keep him for a little longer.
