BASIC FIRST AID KIT

Every home that has a pet should keep a basic first aid kit
in case of emergency. However, giving first aid to your pet
at home is not, by any means, a substitute for ongoing
veterinary care. Listed below is a basic safety kit for
your cat that should always be kept in a convenient place
and out of the reach of children and pets. Everything on
this list is easy to get from your local supermarket or
pharmacy.

First aid cream or antibiotic ointment (such as Neosporin)

Absorbent cotton (to help stop bleeding)

Adhesive tape for bandages

Gauze bandage rolls for bandaging or for use as a muzzle

Iodine solution (dilute with water to prevent stinging)

Gauze pads to be used as compresses or bandages

Sharp scissors with safety tips

Tweezers to remove ticks, thorns and splinters

Cotton swabs to clean your pet's ears and to apply ointment

Antihistamine for insect bites

An extra copy of your pet's medical records

A photo of your pet in case they get lost

The phone number of the Poison Control Center (National
Animal Poison Control: (1-800-548-2423)

The phone number and address of the nearest 24-hour

February 13, 2007

Tuna breath can happen to anyone. But when a cat has a persistent aroma that's downright stinky, it's time for a trip to the vet.

Cats are known for their grooming skills, so if strange smells are emanating from your kitty, do some investigating. Persistent bad breath in a cat is usually due to more than a tangy lunch. It could be her gums need tending to. Also, ear infections, abscesses (which aren't always visible through fur), skin conditions, or encounters with skunks can cause unpleasant odors. If the problem is caught early, your pet will smell like KittyCologne #9 again in no time.

For those who are owned by cats, those who have ever been so owned, and those who will read these as confirmation on their decision to stay far away from felines:

A Cat's New Year Resolutions

My human will never let me eat her pet hamster, and I am at peace with that.

I will not puff my entire body to twice its size for no reason after my human has finished watching a horror movie.

I will not slurp fish food from the surface of the aquarium.

I must not help myself to Q-tips, and I must certainly not proceed to stuff them down the sink's drain.

I will not eat large numbers of assorted bugs, then come home and puke them up so the humans can see that I'm getting plenty of roughage.

I will not lean way over to drink out of the tub, fall in, and then pelt right for the box of clumping cat litter. (It took FOREVER to get the stuff out of my fur.)

I will not stand on the bathroom counter, stare down the hall, and growl at NOTHING after my human has finished watching The X-Files.

I will not use the bathtub to store live mice or lizards for late-night snacks.

I will not perch on my human's chest in the middle of the night and stare into her eyes until she wakes up.

We will not play Herd of Thundering Wildebeests Stampeding Across the Plains of the Serengeti over any humans' bed while they're trying to sleep.

Screaming at the can of food will not make it open itself.

I cannot leap through closed windows to catch birds outside. If I forget this and bonk my head on the window and fall behind the couch in my attempt, I will not get up and do the same thing again.

I will not assume the patio door is open when I race outside to chase leaves.

I will not intrude on my human's candle-lit bubble bath and singe my bottom.

I will not stick my paw into any container to see if there is something in it. If I do, I will not hiss and scratch when my human has to shave me to get the rubber cement out of my fur.

If I bite the cactus, it will bite back.

When it rains, it will be raining on all sides of the house. It is not necessary to check every door.

Birds do not come from the bird feeder. I will not knock it down and try to open it up to get the birds out.

The dog can see me coming when I stalk her. She can see me and will move out of the way when I pounce, letting me smash into floors and walls. That does not mean I should take it as a personal insult when my humans sit there and laugh.

I will not play "dead cat on the stairs" while people are trying to bring in groceries or laundry, or else one of these days, it will really come true.

When the humans play darts, I will not leap into the air and attempt to catch them.

I will not swat my human's head repeatedly when she's on the family room floor trying to do sit ups.

When my human is typing at the computer, her forearms are *not* a hammock.

Computer and TV screens do not exist to backlight my lovely tail.

I am a walking static generator. My human doesn't need my help installing a new board in her computer.

Why Do Cats Purr?

The reason why cats purr has been the subject of great debate among feline experts. At present, there is still no consensus regarding whether the behavior of purring is voluntary or involuntary.

Purring is generally understood to result from the vibration of vocal cords that is amplified by air pushed in and out by contractions of the diaphragm. Both domestic and wild cats (including big cats that do not roar) are known to purr. Kittens are capable of producing purrs within a day after they are born, often purring while suckling.

Purrs are one element of the murmur vocalization group, sounds that can be produced while the mouth is shut. Purrs are believed to communicate pleasure and contentment, but cats will also purr when they are frightened or ill, and some will even purr while delivering kittens. Some experts believe that during these latter, stressful situations, the purring may be an attempt to reduce stress. When cats purr in the presence of other unknown cats or kittens, purring may serve to convey submissiveness or a friendly intent.

Although we may never know exactly why cats purr, perhaps we can all agree that purring is a most pleasant sound, and that our cats must feel some contentment while making those light lulling rumbles.

So when you come to bring presents
you'll be sure and remember me.

I have been good all year Santa;
or at least I've tried to be.
Breaking those ornaments was an accident.
(I love playing under the tree!)

I may have chased the dog a few times
and begged for tuna a time or two.
But otherwise I've been a good kitty
and I'm hoping for a new toy from you.

So Santa, please add me to your list
and I'll wait for you Christmas Eve.
We can share the milk and the cookies

Cat Tales: Separating Fact From Fiction

Despite their popularity, myths about cats persist. Separat-
ing fact from fiction provides a greater understanding of
how to meet their special needs.

A falling cat always lands on its feet
When a cat falls a short distance, it often twists itself
around to right itself and land on its feet. However, falls
from heights can cause severe injury or death.

A window without a screen or with an insecurely fastened
screen is a life-threatening hazard. Other accidents happen
when an air conditioner is removed from the window for
cleaning or repair. Balconies are also a danger. A cat may
fall from a balcony rail as it chases an insect.

Securely fastened screens and being alert to other high-
rise dangers help prevent serious injuries resulting
from falls.

Here's an organization that is always needing assistance. If you open the attached newsletter (I've checked it for viruses and it's clean), there's a list of items that you may have around the house in a yard sale pile that you might be willing to donate (small throw rugs, baskets, cat toys), or other easy to grab items like antiseptic mouthwash and paper towels that you may find yourself willing to donate. And tax exempt cash donations are always welcome.

Please take time to check Wendy's website -- she has over 90 cats living in her home (not in a shelter out back or a barn -- in her HOUSE). The family and volunteers spend about 4 hours every morning changing litter boxes, vacuuming, mopping, scrubbing bowls....all so these kitties can have a home and learn to be part of a human family, increasing their opportunity for adoption. Wendy's statistics on her site for spays/neuters and adoptions are incredible.

Stray Cat

Oh, what unhappy twist of fate
Has brought you, homeless to my gate?
The gate where once another stood
To beg for shelter, warmth and food.
For from that day I ceased to be
The master of my destiny.
While he, with purr and velvet paw
Became within my house, the Law.
He scratched the furniture and shed
And claimed the middle of my bed.
He ruled in arrogance and pride
And broke the heart the day he died.
So if you really think, oh cat,
I'd willingly relive all that
Because you come, forlorn and thin
Well....don't just stand there

...come on in!

Can curiosity kill your cat? If it involves electrical cords, it might.

Be aware that any time a new electronic device or gadget enters the house, it's likely to attract your kitty's attention. If he starts to gnaw on electrical cords that are plugged in, electric shock, burns, and even fire can result. Make every effort to unplug and wrap cords that are not in use, and keep your cat out of areas that might tempt him, such as a home office or computer/media area.

Be careful out there!!!!

Decking your halls with boughs of holly or other decorations? If so, keep a close eye on your curious kitty.

Trees and boughs of greenery can be irresistible to playful cats, so make sure they and other trimmings are secured to a wall or railing. Also, check that none of your seasonal plants or greens is poisonous to your pet. And avoid leaving lit candles, breakable or dangling decorations, and treats like eggnog unattended.

FROM THE "CAT SCRAPS" FILE: FELINE BIRTHDAYS

How old is your kitty in human years?

A kitten's first year in life is equal to about 16 human
years. By the end of the second year she is about 21
human years. Then for each additional year she will age
about four human years. Got that? (That's about four
parties a year!)

Here's a chart to help you keep it all straight so you can
plan the celebrations accordingly:

CAT YEARS-----------------------HUMAN YEARS
   1--------------------------------16
   2--------------------------------21
   3--------------------------------25
   8--------------------------------46
  10--------------------------------54

Advice on Naming Your Cat

The naming of your pet is one of the first steps in creating
a long lasting bond with your pet. It is not a decision to
be taken lightly, you must give the matter some thought.
Hopefully these tips below will help you in your decision.

Cassie Cattails

If you are going to choose a 'Fifi Trixibelle' type name for
your pet, try to make sure that the name can be shortened,
preferably to no longer than two syllables. A shorter name
is also easier for the pet to learn.

If you have other pets in the house, try to have a distinctive
sounding name for your new pet
Also remember that a tiny kitten sleeping in your hands may
grow up to be a large cat and you may like the idea of your
large adult cat being called 'Tiny'

If you have named your new pet after a dear departed pet,
don't expect the animal to become an identical one to it.

If you want to be creative with your name, then be creative.
The naming of a cat is nothing like naming a child. If you
call the cat 'Twinkle Toes' you will not cause him any
psychological difficulties and as far as I am aware, the
other cats in the area will not make fun of the cat because
of the name.

The Yule Cat

The oldest written sources on the Yule Cat are from the Nineteenth Century. One of Iceland's most beloved poets in this century,
Jóhannes úr Kötlum, wrote a lay about the Yule Cat. It follows in the translation of Vignir Jónsson, who says: "You'll have to forgive me
but I didn't make it rhyme - I'm not much of a poet."

You all know the Yule Cat
And that Cat was huge indeed.
People didn't know where he came from
Or where he went.
He opened his glaring eyes wide,
The two of them glowing bright.
It took a really brave man
To look straight into them.
His whiskers, sharp as bristles,
His back arched up high.
And the claws of his hairy paws
Were a terrible sight.
He gave a wave of his strong tail,
He jumped and he clawed and he hissed.
Sometimes up in the valley,
Sometimes down by the shore.
He roamed at large, hungry and evil
In the freezing Yule snow.
In every home
People shuddered at his name.
If one heard a pitiful "meow"
Something evil would happen soon.
Everybody knew he hunted men
But didn't care for mice.
He picked on the very poor
That no new garments got
For Yule - who toiled
And lived in dire need.
From them he took in one fell swoop
Their whole Yule dinner
Always eating it himself
If he possibly could.
Hence it was that the women
At their spinning wheels sat
Spinning a colorful thread
For a frock or a little sock.
Because you mustn't let the Cat
Get hold of the little children.
They had to get something new to wear
From the grownups each year.
And when the lights came on, on Yule Eve
And the Cat peered in,
The little children stood rosy and proud
All dressed up in their new clothes.
Some had gotten an apron
And some had gotten shoes
Or something that was needed
- That was all it took.
For all who got something new to wear
Stayed out of that pussy-cat's grasp
He then gave an awful hiss
But went on his way.
Whether he still exists I do not know.
But his visit would be in vain
If next time everybody
Got something new to wear.
Now you might be thinking of helping
Where help is needed most.
Perhaps you'll find some children
That have nothing at all.
Perhaps searching for those
That live in a lightless world
Will give you a happy day
And a Merry, Merry Yule.

Wrapping Presents with a Cat

1. Clear large space on table for wrapping present.
2. Go to closet and collect bag in which present is contained, and shut door.
3. Open door and remove cat from closet.
4. Go to cupboard and retrieve rolls of wrapping paper.
5. Go back and remove cat from cupboard.
6. Go to drawer, and collect transparent sticky tape, ribbons, scissors, labels, etc…
7. Lay out presents and wrapping materials on table, to enable wrapping strategy to be formed.
8. Go back to drawer to get string, remove cat that has been in the drawer since last visit and collect string.
9. Remove present from bag.
10. Remove cat from bag.
11. Open box to check present, remove cat from box, replace present.
12. Lay out paper to enable cutting to size
13. Try and smooth out paper, realize cat is underneath and remove cat.
14. Cut the paper to size, keeping the cutting line straight.
15. Throw away first sheet as cat chased the scissors, and tore the paper.
16. Cut second sheet of paper to size – by putting cat in the bag the present came in.
17. Place present on paper.
18. Lift up edges of paper to seal in present. Wonder why edges don’t reach. Realize cat is between present and paper. Remove cat.
19. Place object on paper, to hold in place while tearing transparent sticky tape.
20. Spend 20 minutes carefully trying to remove transparent sticky tape from cat with pair of nail scissors.
21. Seal paper with sticky tape, making corners as neat as possible.
22. Look for roll of ribbon. Chase cat down hall in order to retrieve ribbon.
23. Try to wrap present with ribbon in a two-directional turn.
24. Re-roll ribbon and remove paper, which is now torn due to cat’s enthusiastic ribbon chase.
25. Repeat steps 13-20 until you reach lst sheet of paper.
26. Decide to skip steps 13-17 in order to save time and reduce risk of losing last sheet of paper.
27. Retrieve old cardboard box that is the right size for sheet of paper.
28. Put present in box, and tie down with string.
29. Remove string, open box and remove cat.
30. Lay out last sheet of paper. (This will be difficult in the small area of the toilet, but do your best).
31. Discover cat has already torn paper. Unlock door, go out and hunt through various cupboards, looking for sheet of last year’s paper. Remember that you haven’t got any left because cat helped with this last year as well.
32. Return to lockable room, lock door, and sit on toilet and try to make torn sheet of paper look presentable.
33. Seal box, wrap with paper and repair by very carefully sealing with sticky tape. Tie up with ribbon and decorate with bows to hide worst areas.
34. Label. Sit back and admire your handiwork, congratulate yourself on completing a difficult job.
35. Unlock door, and go to kitchen to make drink and feed cat.
36. Spend 15 minutes looking for cat until coming to obvious conclusion.
37. Unwrap present, untie box and remove cat.
38. Go to store and buy a gift bag.

The Cats Who Saved Christmas

T'was the night before Christmas, I just couldn't sleep.
With Keith's loud snoring, to my office I did creep.
I spied my computer, I'll go boot-up that...
I'll take me online for some Christmas Eve chat.

When out in the hall there arose such a racket,
Keith leapt from his bed, pulling on pant and jacket.
When, peeking through blinds, our eyes did behold,
but a weird kind of sleigh, and some guy who looked old.

It was Santa, in our yard and his face glow of rage
stuffing all reindeer into our GIANT CAT CAGE.....
So outside we ran, tried not to wake neighbor
When Santa exclaimed, "Hey Keith, I need a favor!"

"The reindeer said neigh, they won't pull this big sleigh...
...can I borrow your cats to save Christmas Day?"

So we let Santa borrow our four cats to fly,
"Just be careful with Rocko, or he'll scratch out your eye!"
Our pets were not shy and to Santa they came,
As he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:

"Now, GoGo! now, Spot! No fighting in the sky
On, Peanut! on, Rocko! It's time to go fly!
To the top of the porch, to the top of the wall!
With felines in flight, they passed over the mall!

Then we heard him exclaim as he dwindled from sight,
"Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!"

On the morning of Christmas,
all through the house...
cat toys were scattered,
even a fur mouse.

There were balls to be stepped on,
stuffed toys to be squished.
That we'd never bought that kitty stocking
was something we wished.

They had opened the bags,
pretty wrappings they'd torn.
They'd even hidden some presents;
our patience was worn.

Then they jumped on the counter,
nibbled the ham,
helped themselves to the eggnog
and ran through the yams.

They climbed up the tree,
unstrung the lights,
destroyed the Christmas angel,
you never saw such a sight!

But still I exclaimed,
picking up this and that...
it wouldn't be Christmas
if we weren't owned by cats!!

Dear Fellow Ailurophile!

Now that the weather is getting colder our furry little
fiends are looking for a warm to place to cuddle. Be
Aware Of How and where they do this....Have A Great
Holiday Weekend.

DIETARY CONTROL

"If your cat has a tendency toward being overweight and
you feed free-choice (leaving the bowl of food out all
the time), it may be time to put her on a feeding schedule
so that she is not grazing all day. Most cats do well on
twice a day feeding. Divide the daily recommended amount
of food into two feedings, one for the morning and one for
the evening. "

Electric Blanket Caution

If you are considering placing a heating pad in your cat's
bed for warmth, be sure to exercise caution. Cover it with
a towel and check it periodically to make sure it does not
get too hot. An alternative is a warm water-heating pad
through which warm water is circulated at a constant
temperature.

Cats do not think that they are little people. They think
that we are big cats. This influences their behavior in
many ways.

A CAT IN THE TREE

A Christmas tree is an invitation for disaster for any cat.
One year we had a cat that went straight up the middle of
the trunk and sat there. Wouldn't move for nothing, so out
came the water bottle, sprayed him and he never went near
it again. This happened before the tree was decorated so
the spray bottle worked. DO NOT try this if your tree is
decorated! A good idea is to put your tree up a day or
so before you decorate it to see if your cat will even go
near it, then you will know what to do.

Several scat mats may work in discouraging your cat/s from
going near the tree, but this solution can be costly and
there is no guarantee that the scat mats will work.

If you cannot put your christmas tree in a room that can be
closed off to the cat/s, you will have to take several
precautions.

Make sure the lights are unplugged if you are not in the
room. Wire is inviting and dangerous if chewed by cats,
keep it well out of reach from any curious paws. Secure
all breakable ornaments with plastic bag ties. Be very
careful of tinsel. It is dangerous to cats and kittens
if swallowed. It can wrap around their intestines so it
would be best not to even use it.

Remember:

Mistletoe, holly, Poinsettas and other Christmas plants
are poisonous to cats.

There is no easy way of keeping your cat/s away from
a christmas tree, aside from spraying the end of the
branches with anti-chew spray, you just have to be very
watchful of your cat/s around this time of year.

Holiday Safety Tips For Your Furry Little Friends

Now more than ever before pets are a very big part of
family get togethers during the Holidays.

Some potentially dangerous items that cat owners need to
beware of during the holidays include:

Christmas tree lights and electrical cords can cause fatal
shocks and/or burns to cats that chew on them.

Loose cords can entangle pets, leading to choking hazards,
or the possibility of the pet accidentally pulling over the
tree or other decorations.

Holiday foods such as chocolate, alcohol, nuts and spicy
sauces can be toxic and cause Internal problems.

Bones and plastic food wrap can cause choking and/or
obstruct a pet's digestive system, and may require
surgery.

A big thing to be aware of is ribbon. It can cause serious
internal problems if swallowed.

Any open flame is a potential burn hazard. Keep pets away
from candles, fireplaces and any other open flames.

Be cautious about dressing pets in holiday-related costumes.
