Fiona used to be the bigger of the two cats, but has lost weight/muscle mass since her surgery. She is slowly building her weight back, but you would never know by the way she struts her alpha status. She bosses Chloe around, monitoring how much Chloe eats, scratching around the dishes to leave her scent. My guilty pleasure is laughing when Fiona pops Chloe on the head. Chloe is bigger and could flatten her like a pancake, but she is not the Alpha. I find the pecking order of the animal kingdom curious.

I also found out that Fiona has asthma. I have it too, but I haven't had my humidifiers going and the pollen/mold count is HUGE where I live. i need to get those going again. I am supposed to watch her, and if it gets worse, get some kitty prednisone. While she is still a little bony, it is sad to see this big footed-yet smaller/thinner cat cough.

She was SO angry/sore from her surgery, but now that she is feeling better, I get mauled. If she could technically hold my face down and lay on my neck all day, she would. I laugh, and it is nice to hold her again, or have her seek me out.

Fiona has been nibbling on dry food every now and then, so I haven't given her canned food as often. She is still thin looking, and I am going to the vet tomorrow to have her weighed to see if she is making progress. She tried to hop on the couch today.

She pooped out of the litter box literally: she crawled in, stuck her toosh out, and pooped. I was in the other room and I heard furious litter thrashing. I just scooped earlier and put new litter in. I think I am going to have to get a lower litter box. She knows where to go, but the uneven litter might be throwing her off. I use wheat litter, so it was probably like walking on the beach.

Fiona is healthier now than before, but she still looks quite thin (especially without hair on her back half). When she lays on her side, I feel her ribs as a group (which is good) as opposed to individual bumps (not good). At most, she was 11 lbs and the vet told me that we needed to bring that down, which I did, to ten lbs. I think she was 9 lbs before surgery, and then she lost a pound and a half. Last Wednesday, she was at 8 lbs. I know she has muscle to build up, and that she doesn't need to be huge. I would hope to get her to a healthy 9 lbs of muscle. She is a big kitty with bigger feet and paws. Some might say that somewhere in the mixed suburban blood-line of adoption, there might be some Maine coon traits.

She is walking around beautifully. She hasn't jumped on my bed or the couch yet, but walks briskly and wanders around more. My favorite thing: the litter box usage.

I received an email that inspired me to share my story of the kitties and their adoptions, so here it is:

I have had two cats before this--I got them when I was eight years old as a gift from a parent in my mom's classroom (she is a teacher). They lived 19 years before I had to put them down due to old age and health complications. They were healthy kitties born from a cat that was well cared for, and we never took them to the vet because the couple times we did take them to different vets, the experience was horrible. I am more educated now, knowing what declawing the front claws entails. My heart was broken after they were gone, and I missed the companionship.
My mom and I knew we were going to adopt kitties and filled out the paperwork online before we got there. We bought food, a kitty condo, and a litter box. It was the best day I had in a long time. These kitties were tiny, malnourished, but they had a lot of spiritIt turns out that because these kitties were in a shelter, they were pretty sick. I nursed them back to health through more than several rounds of medication for each--pill form, liquid form, lysine treats, lysine powder. I stayed up late holding Fiona & Chloe when they didn't feel well. After a year, we found that Fiona has a food allergy and has to have a special diet along with liquid prednisone every now and then so that she wouldn't have itchy skin on the back of her legs and bite, creating holes and risking infection. Chloe has Feline Herpes, and it took a while to get that under control, it is manageable. The wikipedia pages show the worse of cases, not the everyday symptoms. These kitties are my family, and because of all of their health issues, I watch them closely. The second they started limping, I knew I needed to help them. I have a good relationship with the vet hospital I go to and they have been on the spot with their diagnosis and very helpful. The FHO surgery hasn't been the easiest, or the cheapest, but it was worth while. I didn't want the kitties to be in pain all of the time, grinding bones in the wrong places, and other painful symptoms. They are far better off going through this surgery. The reason I have posted this diary in both kitty pages is because this site has been helpful answering basic questions about health and behavior. I thought that if I could post information and help others with issues from behavior to health problems, I can help other kitty families as well.

The vet visit went well. Since it is 10 days after her surgery (as opposed to 2 days), there isn't any danger. I just have to keep the E-collar/cone of shame on her. She is "happy" to have it on.

For the first time since these kitties had surgery, I thought it was okay to run some errands, have lunch with family. When I got home, she was sitting without her cone. I looked everywhere for it. I found it....in the litter box, under a giant present. It is a good thing I had an extra collar for Chloe.

It is a good thing that I am suffering from insomnia. I caught Fiona trying to pull out her staples. I didn't have a cone on for a while because she was too weak to clean herself, but now that she is better, she tries to pull her staples out. As far as I can see, it looks like she pulled out one or two. Luckily, I have a vet appt at 10:20am to take off her Fentanyl patch. I am not mad at her, just disappointed because I want her to get better faster and I am afraid that this will delay that. If she licks too much or pulls out too many stitches, she runs the risk of infection or having to have surgery all over again.

She was weak yesterday, so when she peed on the bed, I reintroduced her to the litter box and let it go. She has been walking around just fine, so I was not happy to see that she peed in front of my door. I am grateful I didn't step in it (barefoot on carpets), but I reintroduced her to the litter box IMMEDIATELY after. I have an enzymatic spray that i am using, but it is just annoying.

I have been cooped up in the house and I think that I just need to treat myself to a movie tonight.

While it is sad she had to suffer in pain (shaking, sad, etc), the situation has been rectified and we can move on. She lost a pound and so I have prescription canned food. She doesn't seek food and water, and I have to spoon feed her/use a wide syringe. Her mood is better, but she is still recovering. This surgery has been hard on her and she is doing the best she can.
There doesn't seem to be any relief for her. I am taking her to the vet to see if this is 'part of the healing process' (which I don't think so), or if there is something we need to address. I would rather be sure of what is going on. It makes me sad to hear her cry. Even though Chloe only had one leg done, she was never in this much pain.

I called the vet to get some advice about pain medication. We were up all night. She is so sensitive and erratic that if I touch a blanket near her tail end, she has a fit. She is a good girl and doesn't bite, but it is alarming and stressful. I have feliway plugs just about everywhere, but she is in pain. She hasn't gotten the hang of moving around yet. She squirms. I tried making a path of food for her to follow, but she ends up in the wrong direction.

I guess I am having a hard time trying to figure out where to draw the line. Since it is only the second day after her surgery, I don't mind carrying her around right now, but then I have to figure out when to stop.

I didn't really get to sleep until 4-7 this morning. After a couple hours of thrashing, growling, spinning and hissing, she walked around the dining table and went to the litter box. She was so tired, that I had to pull her out (by the scruff). I used an electric blanket for Chloe, and it seemed to keep her comfortable, so I used it for Fiona. She is comfortable on it, and I get the chance to clean her up a little. I use those earth wipes and then brush her. I have had cats before (for 19 years--since I was 8). I know that as long as you are slow, they can see your hands, you look them in the eye and tell them what you are doing they won't freak out (the tone calms them). She lets me touch her hind feet and tail when I clean her, but will scream like a banshee if I touch her feet with my finger. I don't know if she will even let me take her to the vet on Monday to take off the Fetinol patch. I am going to ask if I can do it myself, and wait until she can get her stitches off (2 weeks) before we make another vet trip.
She loves head rubs, and even played with me a little. Chloe was easier to take care of, but I am getting through it. I am so grateful the weekend is coming up. My mom will take "watch" for a couple hours so I can sleep.

I think the hardest thing after a cat has surgery is coming out of anesthesia. She's freaking out because she has no concept of time, the bottom half of her body is shaved, and she is hurting.

The past 3-4 hours have been really rough. She couldn't move her hips and prop herself up, so most of the time she was screaming like a banshee, growling because she was frustrated, and sliding in circles around the room. My mom and tag teamed to calm her down.

She is the alpha kitty--she doesn't like help. I tried to put a thin fleece blanket over her so she wouldn't get cold, but it offended her feline sensibility. We have learned to make her comfortable by putting her on this bed cushion (for kitties by martha stewart via petsmart), and lay her a couple feet away from the fireplace (her favorite place). She did make a lap around the room last night, putting weight on her feet for 3 seconds and then rested. She is doing much better. I bought these measuring cups a long time ago for kitty food purposes, and have been giving her food and water every now and then. When she starts walking around a little better, I will let her go to her regular feeding area.

I am so very tired. And it is hard watching one cat go through a surgery, but two cats going through surgery within a week is hard. I am currently unemployed and (somewhat) lucky to be home to take care of my girls.

It was hard taking her to the vet. We have a really great vet, and Fiona is well behaved, but she gets scared. I adopted Fiona and Chloe when they were two months old. We have been through so much. When Chloe had to go to surgery all day, I felt like my left hand was gone. Now that Fiona is in surgery, I feel like my right hand is gone. I know they are not gone for good, but they have been with me for 18 months, and I have a big attachment to them both.

Why she needed it

After going through Chloe’s big ordeal, I thought I might be over paranoid when I took Fiona to the vet. I noticed that when I was holding her, she was sensitive around her hips. She tipped over while sitting on my chest and then when I picked her up to hold her again, she became vocal and left. I thought that I would rather be paranoid and wrong about Fiona concerning whether I should go to the vet, rather than be wrong and not doing anything about it. My vet checked her out, and we found she was having pain and discomfort. (*the most important thing to learn the difference in sound she makes when she is annoyed, and the sound she makes if she is uncomfortable). She got her x-rays, sent them to a radiologist. Surprise! Like her sister, she has a fractured hip (left) and the growth plate is sliding. However, I didn’t know that her right hip was bad as well. Later on, the surgeon told me it was “just falling apart”. Good grief! Poor kitty! (So) She is having her surgery February 20th.

Signs your kitty has trouble:
-favoring one leg over the other
-trouble jumping
-using upper body rather whole body
-laying on one side a lot
-sensitivity to hips
-kitty wouldn’t sit up, or loaf
-Fiona had trouble getting up from laying on her side and would vocalize pain as she got up
