As you furiends who have read Viola's earlier musings already know, she very much follows the Ocicat breed characteristic of following her pawrents all around the house, to the extent that one of our nicknames for her is "Shadow", for the way she shadows us. Last night she had been a bit picky about eating dinner, something very unusual for Miss Piggy, so I decided to check up on her. I went out in the hallway and called her, which usually brings her running. No Viola. I noticed the hall linen closet was slightly open (the latch is spring loaded, so a strong enough push or pull will open it), so I quickly checked the closet and no Viola. She had previously used all the nice soft bedding here as a comfy nap spot a few times. While this might not have bothered most cat pawrents, we were getting a bit concerned as this was SO unlike her. I made a few more loops around the house, and about the third time I find her in the hallway, the same one with the linen closet. We all go about our business, and about an hour later, same thing happens. I noticed that I had left that linen closet door open, so after a quick look inside, I closed it. More looking, more calling, and at this point meowmy and daddy are really getting concerned, again because this had never happened in the five months Viola had been in our family. I was standing in the hallway wondering where to look next when I heard a faint scratching from that durn linen closet. I open the door and out pops our little overgrown spotted kitten, as if nothing had happened! Daddy should have remembered how much she loves to snuggle UNDER the covers, I am sure that is what she was doing there.

Maybe daddy needs to put some real doorknobs and latches on our closet doors... or else train Saphira to be a search cat?

Well, our four pawed alarm clocks found a new way to wake us up this morning, and they were at the other end of the house at the time! Our house has a security system, which we normally do not have activated when we are home, although meowmy sometimes does have the door/window sensors on when she is home alone. Even when the system is disarmed, we still get a triple beep on the control pad in our bedroom whenever any of the door or windows opens or when one of the glass break detectors, one each in the living and family rooms, activates. About six this morning the triple beep went off, waking both of the humans. I found both of the house felines in the living room, with doors and windows secure. Nothing was broken, but in the past the glass break detectors have triggered on something as small as a key dropped on the tile in the entry. Exactly HOW Saphira and Viola managed to wake us up will probably always remain a mystery, because so far neither of them is talking.

I am usually very good about sleeping in with my pawrents and my sisfur Saphira, but some days I wake up a bit early and really feel like a very playful kitty. I was that way this morning, and woke up before anyone else. First thing I did was to drag a small rug that I usually use to sharpen my claws on across the room, making a lot of noise in the process. Then I started playing with one of my favorite toys, one of those thingies with a little ball inside a circular tunnel that I can bat around. This one is really cool, the ball chirps like a birdie whenever I move it. I thought it would be more fun to bat that ball around on the floor, so I, being a very smart and curious kitty, managed to get the ball out of that tunnel and had a lot of fun playing with it before daddy got up and put it back inside the tunnel and put an end to my fun. I gave up sadly and curled up in bed with daddy and went back to sleep. Already planning my next morning playtime!

Tuesday night meowmy called to daddy and told him to bring the kids (us!) to the living room right away. We all trotted in there and meowmy was looking out the window. It was kind of hard to see since it was dark, but it was all white outside. Daddy said it was something called snow. He opened the front door to take a peek outside, and I saw my chance to go try to go get a look for myself. I tried to slip out the open door (remember that I am an indoor kitty, and I am imprisoned here 24/7), but got caught as daddy was closing it and had to back out quickly. In daddy's defense, he did not see me trying to sneak out, I move really fast and am a stealth kitty. We all went to bed, and in the morning we all went back to the living room to see all these white flakes falling, daddy said it was snowing! It really looked nice, and with the sunlight we could see that everything around was white, even our cars (the ones they use to take us for our pawdicures) were covered with it too. I sat on my favorite kitty tree by the window, and daddy took some pictures of me looking out at the pretty scene, and he also went outside and took some of me looking out at him and the snow. Daddy will try to post some of them here, but lately Catster seems to have fleas that keep him from being able to post cute pictures of us. I REALLY wanted to go out and play in the snow, but it all melted and went away.

Saphira and Viola's dad again, adding the same entry to both diaries since I am not sure who is responsible, quite possibly both are involved. I think we have mentioned (multiple times!) how much both of our spotted girls love to play fetch, and how we keep a stash of fuzzy mice on our bed where they are easily available to toss for them to retrieve. They usually toss them around a bit for themselves before they return them to us. The both also sometimes pick them up from the bed and take them to other parts of the house to play with. Over time we have bought dozens of mice, at least fifty or more, but due to the way some of them get stolen and hidden, we were down to about a dozen on our bed. For some reason, over the last week they have suddenly started reappearing! The count went from 12 to 14 to 16 and finally peaked at 21. The number is down a bit, but I really think it is kind of cute how they are returning their toys now. Meowmy says that having two Ocicats is like having a couple of two year olds. Not quite, when our kids were two they NEVER picked up their toys without being told, many times!

As we started saying soon after Saphira (our first Ocicat ever) joined us, she is probably the most interactive and amusing feline we have ever met, and two of them are even more so. They are both just absolute joys!

This entry is from daddy, since this story involves some electrical stuff that most kitties don't understand.

The other night I was doing some work on the desktop computer in the den, where we also keep some boxes that we use to store things in. One of them had been used to ship a small radio, and still was full of those expanded plastic pellets, AKA "popcorn". I heard a noise coming from that box, and then saw Viola's head poke out. I reached into the box and gently pulled her out. Now anyone who has ever petted a cat when the humidity is low knows that this can generate a lot of static electricity. Well, pulling her out of that box did the same thing. As she came out of the box, the entire rear half of her body was covered in that popcorn, big time static cling! She looked SOOO funny, half chocolate spots and half white popcorn pieces!

Another DDP! And only ten days since my first DDP! This is just so purrrfect! Purring a big THANK YOU! to all my furriends for their nice pawmails and gifts.

As long as I have your attention, a little update on goings on here in our cathouse (where we DO allow our pawrents to hang out with us)... My sisfur Saphira and I have been playing together a LOT recently! Chasing each other all over the house is so much fun! Meowmy and daddy really think it is cute, except maybe when we either run into one of them or tear across their bare feet (our sharp little claws can hurt, so they say). But we make up for it at bedtime, when each of us curls up with one of our humans and goes to sleep with them. I particularly like crawling under the covers and sleeping by daddy's feet, it is nice and warm down there.

Daddy always says that I finish off a Fancy Feast meal in less than two minutes, turns out he was wrong. He actually measured it this morning, took me eighty seconds, not counting licking the plate afterwards.

It has only been a few months since the pawrents adopted me into their family and added my Catster page. Once my sisfur Saphira learned that I am a pretty nice little kitty and fun to play with, we have been having a great time chasing each other all over the house, and we both love playing fetch with all the nice fuzzy mice they keep for us to chase.

Night before last it was pretty cold here, daddy said it was 21 degrees outside, and 59 in the house. I don't know what a degree is, but I know it was really cold. Usually Saphira and I sleep in bed with meowmy and daddy, it's heated so it's nice and warm. Sometimes I sneak under the covers and nibble daddy's toes a bit, but always before I came right back out when I was through playing. I guess since it was so cold, daddy let me get under the covers again with him. He fell asleep, and he seemed a bit surprised when he woke up in the morning and found that I was still down there by his feet. It was so nice and warm under the covers! I think I might do this again on cold nights!

Viola's dad again, she has a new way of (I think) dispatching the fuzzy mouse toys after she catches them and is through playing with them. In the last week I have "rescued" eight of them from her water dish, sometimes in pairs. Not sure whether she is trying to drown them or just thinks they need a bath. She does like to toss them in the air and then try to catch them, as does her sisfur Saphira. It is a bit of a stretch to believe that in a bedroom that measures over four hundred square feet, eight mice could land in a dish that measures less than half a square foot by pure chance. They had some feline help, the only question is why? Anyone have any ideas, Viola is not talking!

Update: Last night she brought me back a mouse that was totally soaked! I assume she dunked it in the water bowl and then returned it to me, dropping it into the bowl and then fishing it out again would be really hard for her.

I got a surprise this morning, after breakfast daddy picked me up, which I like, he usually gives me some pets and scratchies and I start purring in two seconds. This time, after a few pets, he put me into my kitty carrier. I did not fight or complain much, after all the last time I rode in it was to bring me here to my furever home. Out to the car and a short ride to a place they called Petsmart. They took me to the back of the store and got in line. There was a lady in line ahead of me with a little dog, and she had two nice little girls with her who thought I was really cute. I rubbed up against the door of the carrier, and they put their fingers through and petted me. When it was my turn, daddy told the nice vet tech that I was an Ocicat, and he could not find a way to enter me into his computer! Daddy finally figured it out, he did not know anything about Ocis, and spelled it Aussiecat! Once he got it right he took me back to where they do the nail trimming, and I was a really good girl and behaved very well while my nails were trimmed. They look so nice now! After we got home I got extra kitty treats for behaving so well, I really liked that part!

I am really having fun playing with Saphira now; we chase each other all over the house and get under mewomy and daddy's feet a lot. We are two really fast kitties!

Another note from their dad:

Saphira and Viola's relationship continues to improve, still a hiss and a growl from Saphira once in awhile, but also some touching of noses and a lot of play, chasing each other around the house a lot. Of course they both sleep with us every night and also nap on our bed when we are watching TV. Usually Saphira sleeps with Terri and Viola is with me, but sometimes one of us is lucky enough to have two spotted jungle cats using us for a nap spot. Yesterday I had Saphira curled up on my legs while Viola had her head on my ankle. Of course movement on my part was impossible, but then again, with two sweet Ocis to keep me company, why would I want to move?

Another sales job from me... anyone who might enjoy a beautiful spotted jungle cat who is intelligent, loyal, loving, and very playful and entertaining should look at an Ocicat, they are just a joy! Anyone in Southern California interested can pawmail me and I can give you the contact info for the breeder we adopted our two girls from, he is just a great breeder who loves his kitties, and it shows in our two wonderful Ocis.

My sisfur Saphira is Cat of the Day today! Purring for her, she DOES seem to be getting a little nicer to me lately! I have been joining her and meowmy and daddy in bed, and while she might hiss when I first jump on, she settles down and leaves me alone after that. Their bed is really nice, not only is it heated so it is nice and warm (they tell me it gets a LOT colder here than at my old home down the hill), but it is covered with all kinds of neat kitty toys for me to play with. And I can get all kinds of strokes and scratchies and tummy rubs, which I just LOVE.

Viola's dad again...
About time for an update... Viola had really been showing that she wanted to explore the rest of the house, but we were still worried about Saphira possibly harming her, so for a time we would confine Saphira to our bedroom, not a huge problem for her as she spends a lot of time here and it is where her toys, kitty box, and bed (our waterbed!) are located, and it is where she is fed. We then let Viola have the run of the house, and she loves it! One thing her breeder failed to mention about her was her speed: When she wants to work off some energy, she is faster than a speeding bullet! "Her" room is at one end of a hall. It leads past another bedroom, then empties into the entry. On the other side is our dining room. The entry, dining room, and living room are very open, with only oak railings separating the living room from the other areas. From her room to the end of the dining room she has almost 50 feet of uninterrupted running room, and she uses ALL of it! She will tear down the hall, bump into a box at the end of the dining room, then dash into the living room and from there back into the entry, into the hall, and back to her room. She is an absolute little fireball!

We also started letting them meet in our bedroom, larger and Saphira's home turf. She still hisses and growls a bit, and sometimes chases Viola, but no injuries have resulted. Since then we have let them both loose in the house most of the day, and no further problems other than the old hissing, growling, and chases. Viola actually will walk toward Saphira, I get the impression that she might actually like to play. She now spends some time in our bed, think she is starting to like us!

Last night we had what I think was a very good thing. Viola was curled up next to Terri in bed, and I was on the other side working on my laptop. Saphira jumped up on the rail on my side, something she does often. Seeing her nemesis curled up by mommy, she hissed a couple of times, then proceeded to curl up beside me! They stayed like that for a couple of hours, about four feet apart, with no more complaints from Saphira. We are still having Viola sleep in her room at night, just in case they should tangle at the other end of the house while we are asleep, but other that they both are loose most of the time. The only exception is feeding, with Saphira tending to graze while Viola snarfs down her food in nothing flat, she would end up with most of the food and Saphira would probably starve!

And yes, she is still one of the sweetest cats we have ever seen!

From Saphira and Viola's dad (posting in both Saphira and Viola's diaries):

After a fair amount of time spent gradually introducing them with a physical barrier (baby gate), we took Saphira down to have her claws trimmed (just in case), then let them get together for the first time in the bedroom where Viola has been hanging out. Results were kind of mixed, but I view kind of positively. Both of them spent a lot of time walking around the room, not getting too close for quite a while. Saphira was sniffing everything, she did hiss whenever she was close to Viola, but for the most part no really aggressive moves. Maybe a few growls from Viola, but again no aggressive moves. We kept them together (with us there all the time) for over an hour. Toward the end of that time, Saphira moved toward Viola a few times, who jumped on a desk or dresser to evade her. At this point we thought it best to give them a breather and let them both relax and eat. Bottom line was that no actual physical encounter resulted, which I take as a good thing. Thinking about maybe one night having Saphira sleep in the bedroom where Viola has been, and let Viola sleep with us, where Saphira spends most of her time. More to follow!

Purring thank you to all my Catster furiends for all their nice gifts, comments, and pawmails about my totally unexpected DOTD selection. It was a great day, I even had a visit from one of daddy and Meowmy's grandkids. I walked up and sniffed his hand when he came near me, and decided he was OK. Then he dangled my favorite kitty teaser and I had a lot of fun chasing it. Saphira has come near my room a few times, and given me a few hisses, but I think she is just a little unsure about having a new kitty invade her domain. Even when it is a kitty like me, who used to play with her at our old home. We will work thinks out eventually!

I was SOOO surprised when daddy told me that my diary was selected for Diary of the Day! Especially since I have only been with him and Meowmy for a week, and it has only been a few days since I arrived on Catster. MOL! Now it has been a REALLY big week for me! First my trip to my new furever home, and now this! Meowmy and daddy are starting to get me introduced, or really re-introduced, to my former playkitty Saphira. So far she has not seemed too interested in hanging out with me, but maybe she just does not recognize me, after all I was just a little kitten, about seven months old, when we saw each other last, and now I am an almost full grown eighteen month old beautiful spotted kitty, kind of like her, but with a darker paint job. I sure hope we can get back to being furiends again soon! After all, we Ocicats are really special (or so my new pawrents say!), and we have to stick together.

Last weekend Meowmy and daddy drove down to the really nice breeder where I was born and raised, House of Oci, to bring me to their home. I will really miss Jesse and all my other furiends there, human, feline, and canine, but I am excited to join their other sweet Ocicat Saphira. We used to play together before she left Jesse for her furever home here, so I hope we can be playmates again. I am still getting used to my new home and new meowmy and daddy, but so far I like it! I get lots of pets and chin scratches and tummy rubs! The grub is great and today they started giving me kitty treats. Yummy! I need to get back to my toys, there are a lot of fuzzy mouse toys around here that need killing!
