Our Furless Mom

Our furmom can be pretty strange at times. For one thing, she loves sitting in this big box of water. Sometimes she sits there for a long time. (shudder) We tried dipping our paws into the water. It was wet. No, thanks.

Then tonight, when she got out of the water, she started rubbing her legs with a metal thing. She was taking off her fur! We couldn’t believe it. Doesn’t she know that the fur protects her skin and keeps her warm? It was so strange. I guess we’ll have to start calling her our furless mom. At least she didn’t take the long fur off her head!

Having Fun Helping Mom with Chores by Mac and Tippy

Helping our furmom with her chores is such fun! This evening she was putting clean sheets on the futon. We sat right in the middle of the futon, where we can get the best view of the way she unfolds the sheets so they become really large. Sometimes we get covered up by a sheet, and then we can play hide-and-seek with our furmom. Even though she can't see us, she always seems to know where to find us.

After that, she got out the big machine that looks like a toy. It's not, though. It makes a lot of noise and blows out hot air. It's scary! It also has a long hose with a stick on the end. That would be kind of fun to chase, but we're afraid of the machine, so we just stay away when she's moving the hose and the stick. Once the hose was lying for a long time on the floor making a circle. It was so cozy that we curled up inside and went to sleep. We like sleeping in anything that makes a circle.

Next, she put some clothes in the big white box that we sometimes sit on. We explored the inside of the box a little, and, with so many soft clothes, it looked like a really comfortable place to sleep. In fact, we thought our furmom was making another hiding place just for us. But then the box started to shake and water started pouring out. We usually like water, but we don't like getting wet, and the shaking scared us, so we jumped out.

Then we heard a swishing sound, so we went into the livingroom to see what was happening. Our furmom was pushing a cloth around on the top of a table. That looked like fun and something we could help with, so we jumped up on the table and started chasing the cloth around. If she wants a clean table top, we can do better than that silly little cloth. Besides, we also decorate the surface with cute little paw prints.

A while later, the white box made some beeping sounds, the really fun part began because she took the clothes out and hung them up for us to play with. The socks are especially fun because we can reach them by standing on the white box. We couldn't do that when we were smaller, and it drove us crazy to watch them dangling there. However, now we can easily hit them, and sometimes we make them fall down.

Finally, our furmom took a bath. That's our favorite time. First, she empties the big tub. We could spend hours watching the swirling movement of water flowing across the floor and down the drain. It also makes an exciting gurgling noise. Then more water comes out of this big silver tube. We love trying to take drinks from the silver tube in the sink, but we have to be careful about this one because it's really hot. When she gets in the tub, we sometimes walk along the edge. If we're feeling really brave, we dip a paw into the water. A couple times, though, each of us has lost his balance and our back legs ended up slipping into the water. Although water is pleasant to watch, we don't like getting wet! This evening, we just sat by the tub while our furmom sat in the tub reading. She seemed very relaxed, which made us feel very peaceful.

Later, when she puts the cover over the tub and our special rug, we're going to sleep there. It'll be nice if we can have dreams about the swirling water, but not nightmares of the big noisy machine with the hot air. Tomorrow, we may find some new ways to help our furmom with other chores, like when she rubs the dishes with a cloth and water to clean them (even though we try to show that our tongues are more effective), or makes loud, quick sounds and movements with a knife and vegetables (and we can play with pieces that fall on the floor)! If we can sneak into the closet when she's not looking, maybe we can even help her rearrange her clothes by pulling them down. Now that would really be fun!

Christmas Present

Written by Mac & Tippy's furmom: My little ones are so active that I decided to get a climbing tree for them (in addition to Amanda's perch - see http://www.ca-in-sapporo.com/cats/perch.html). I saw one at the pet store that's a bit pricey, but since I'm not doing any traveling during the holiday season, I thought I'd splurge. It's coming tomorrow morning, and I can hardly wait. Crazy, isn't it? All excited about a Christmas present for cats. It's more like a Christmas present for me!

While I was there, I decided to buy a couple little Santa hats to make a Christmas photo. Actually, I can't stand it when people buys little clothes to dress their animals in, but here I am - doing the same thing! The problem at the store was that they only had one Santa hat, and it was a display hat. The other was a "reindeer Santa hat" (well, that's the best way I can describe it). The reindeer hat came with a set, again a bit pricey. If only my cats weren't so cute. I decided to get it, and then talked the clerks into selling me the Santa hat, explaining that I have two kittens, and they're going to be bigger and not as cute next year. (Mind you, I'm doing all of this in Japanese.)

Now how I'm going to get them to pose in their Santa hats is another question. You'll find out soon if I succeed!
