Mom's freaking out again - she does this every summer. See, our little apartment can get pretty warm and we don't have AC. And this weekend it's supposed to get to almost 100 degrees! Mom has to work on Monday, and it's supposed to get to 95. Her question is, do you think I'll be OK in the apartment even though it'll get pretty stuffy and hot? She doesn't know what else she can really do. If it weren't the holiday weekend, she might consider getting a hotel room, but everything is booked here. And the kitty spa is probably also booked, plus the stress might not be worth it either.
What do you guys think? What do you do to stay cool in the summer?
we do have a similar problem - in general. not yet this year. our windows go to the south (full sun for hours) and no ac. i love the sun - i am only a bit lazier than in cooler days. the only thing human does is take care that i have colder places: in the shadow of course and i like to stretch out on our wooden floor instead of carpets for that is cooler. i have several "stretch-out-places" to change when it's really hot. she once offered cotton blankies out of the freezer but that did not work for me...
oh, and she insists that i get enough fluids. if i don't drink (what she considers enough) she's preparing "wobbly water" (i.e. simple water with gelatine, of course your mommy could add a few drops of tuna water, kitty milk or whatever you like to flavour). i love jelly and it's fun to play with (helpful) food ;)
I lie on the wood coffee table, with my belly showing and airing things out. We get ice in our water, which is fun to play with as well keeping the water cool. Angel freezes a big round block of it and it takes awhile to all melt
The humans put a fan in the window (facing out) to exhaust air out of the house, while drawing outside air in. (Which might not be the smartest thing, if the air inside your place is cooler than the air outside.) None of like to lie in the path of a fan's air though, it ruffles the fur in an unmentionable way.
Remember cool air sinks, so the coolest area of your place will be on the floor and if it get really hot, the cool of the tub or shower will feel good and make a nice bed to sleep off the heat.
Do you have a fan that you could use for the day or a ceiling fan that you could put on high? It's hot here too and that's what mom has. Maybe before she leaves she could add some ice cubes to your water bowl so your water will be cold for a while. Maybe if she has a ice pack she could put in the freezer and then leave near your favorite sleeping spot so if you need a cool spot to lay on you would have that as well. If she thinks it's too cold leave a thin towel over it. We think you will be okay so mom shouldn't worry. It's gonna be a long summer!
Hugs and purrs,
Simon & Reuben(an angel)
Hi Monida, I think you will be fine. Like everyone else has said, a fan would be good. You will seek out a cooler spot like the bathroom if you need it. Ice in your water is also fun!
We also get ice in our water regardless of the season.
Please tell your mom not to worry!

Generally cats like to be warmer then them humans. When your Mom gets home at night she could put a damp wash cloth on you and leave it on as long as you'll tolerate, to cool you down.
I think you'll be fine, Monida. Try laying on the floor instead of the carpet and find a shade to nap in. Your Mommy could put ice cubes in your water to stay cold.
Try and stay cool!
Hugs & Purrs
I enjoy sunning myself and don't seem to mind the heat. On the other hand, I could go under the bed where it's cooler and shady. My mom loves that AC thing and it makes me cold at night! I have a little house bed now, but why should I use it? Let her turn off that air!
I always have cool water but I will actually stretch out on the bed in the heat of the day and laze.
We do that best, I think.
Perhaps a window open & a fan running to keep fresh air circulating, like Nuk said? That's what Dad does,& we do OK. He forgot to open the window once,& it got about 100 degrees. I was panting when he got back but we were all OK.
Like other kitties have said, fans work pretty well to keep the air circulating. Taller fans, rather than the ones that are at floor level, are best. We've never tried ice in the water bowl, but it sounds like a good idea. :) Since it's liable to get stuffy in the house, is there any way your mom can leave some windows open in the cooler part of the house?
short oh your mom taking ewe ta werk with her, your mom can open de windows de night before, if they are screened in, just long enuf to let cool air in, then shut them and pull all de cur tins closed sew it be like night time in yur house N de sunshine isnt knot gettin in.....
make sure her lets ewe have access to like de bathroom coz kittehs will lay against de tub, toy let or on de floor if it be tiled, coz those areas be kewl
and put an xtra big bowl ore two oh water out with ice in it like suggested, N az silly az this be soundin put yur toys away sew ewe dont haz an urge to run around N play with em
if her be close ta werk frum home her can may bee leave at break time N check on ewe two....
Mom puts water in the bathtub and puts in some ping pong balls. We also like to lay on parts of the floor that are not carpeted. And we get ice in our water bowls too. Mom puts on the ceiling fans just to keep the air moving. When she is home we sometimes get our fur brushed with a brush dipped in water or rubbed with a cool wet wascloth on our faces, bellies and paws. Try to stay cool, Purrs, Skylar
Monida! We get sooo hot here too! We has an air conditioner, but even when Mommy leaves it on when she goes out, I still hang in the bed room where it doesn't reach. Mommy leaves a fan on, puts ice in my fountain and I usually hang out under tha bed or in tha bathtub! I hope it's gonna be ok fur you! Maybe yr Mom can close all tha blinds too!
Make sure you've got plenty of water and try to stay cool!
Thanks everyone! Mom says she's going to use every one of your tips! You really made mom feel better about the whole situation!
We get fans and ice in our water too. Mom always pulls the shades down so the sun doesn't come in. Mom doesn't really like air-conditioning all that much, so unless it gets really really hot, she never puts it on when she's home either.
She always said she could never understand how Keshy would want to lay in the sunny window on the hottest days.
Let's see how it goes this year for us, especially me--it's the first time I have a very full coat.
