My 14th Birthday!

Sunday was my 14th Birthday! Pretty hard to imagine. It seems like only yesterday.....hmmmm. I must be getting old, I feel nostalgic!

We didn't do too much to celebrate on Sunday, but let me tell you about Tuesday! Wait, maybe I should start with the middle of last week. Our fountain was acting up. Sometimes it would run and sometimes it would stop. When it wasn't running, Ivan would bite the edge of it, try to pick it up and bang it back down. (It is actually velcroed to a mat because he can pick it up and spill it). Mom cleaned it a few times thinking that something was wrong with the filter or the pump. Well on Thursday she felt the cord and it was way too warm. So the fountain was no more! A sad day in our household. We all love the fountain, Mom is constantly refilling it. She got on the computer and ordered us a new one...while she was at it she ordered us 2 new scratching posts and one for our other grammy's kitten too.

On Tuesday, Skylar was waiting on the radiator for the mailman. He watches for him every day. Skylar saw someone else first though...the UPS man, leaving 3 big boxes on our porch. He ran and told us and we all took turns looking out the window and trying to guess what was inside. We didn't get to open the boxes till the Moms were both home. It was awesome! We were thrilled to have a fountain again and we are enjoying the new posts. One is carpet and one is sisal and they are tall so we can stretch good when we scratch. We also have one of those corrugated cardboard lounge scratchers and we love that too. We also got to play in the big boxes, that was almost as much fun!

Many thanks for all who stopped by my page for my birthday. I'm so glad you are still hanging out here. Thank you for the gifts and well wishes. Special thanks to WeBeeSiamese for the picture, you made this old man look downright handsome! Love you guys more than my new scratchers,

A little change of pace and a monsoon too!

Hi! Thank you all for the purrs. I am starting to feel a little better and it sure is nice to be back home. Let me tell you what happened. It goes something like this....

On Tuesday night, I hacked up a hairball. After that I threw up about 3 more times and I was really not myself. Mom gave me some Pepcid and we all went to sleep. The next morning I didn't want breakfast and was still really wiped out, so Mom called the doctor and I got a noon appointment. They had me on fluids all afternoon. The vampire came and took some of my blood. They started me on something for pain, an antibiotic and some anti-nausea meds. They sent me home around 6:30. The doctor called Mom at work and said to keep an eye on me and suggested that if there was no improvement I should go up to the animal hospital the next morning.

Mom knew she couldn't miss work on Thursday morning, so she decided that it would be better to take me that night then wait till Thursday after work. So there we are at midnight, out on the highway on the way to the hospital. Not a lot of traffic, just some big trucks. When we got there, it was just us. No other patients. No lines, no waiting, no big dogs in the waiting room.

I got an x-ray and got put back on fluids and got settled in my cozy cage for the evening. The next morning, my sweet doctor was in to see me. She fusses over me so much. She gave me an exam and an ultrasound. We even made a movie (of my ultrasound, how cool is that!) I even ate a little baby food for her when she coaxed me. She called Mom and said that they would do bloodwork and keep an eye on me in the afternoon. If things looked okay, they would send me home.

Mom got a call around 5:30 that she could come and pick me up for around 6:30PM. In Mom's town, they were having a big thunderstorm with lots of rain. Mom grabbed a quick bite to eat, let the storm slow down and was out the door. She met with the doctor and picked me up.

(Funny side note, at the check-out desk there was another family checking out too and they had a big dog that was being discharged. He came over and sniffed my crate. I let out a growl that turned heads in the waiting room. The dog jumped back and walked away, he turned to look back at me and I let loose another deep growl. Mom told me to be nice and knock it off, and I responded with a really wimpy meow. The girl behind the desk was laughing and so was the doggy Mom and Dad.)

On our way home it rained so hard. Mom had the wipers going on high speed and her flashers on because we could only go about 40 miles an hour on the highway. You just couldn't see for how hard it was raining. It was even hard to hear, the rain was so loud on the roof of the truck. Mom had to pull over at a rest stop and wait out the storm. We sat with the radio on and waited till it slowed down some.
We then continued home and the rain picked up again, it poured buckets. The roads had streams running along the sides and even had ponds of water in some places. Mom was glad she was in the truck, because it was pretty deep in some spots. We finally made it home, it was pouring, lightening, thundering and wicked. We made a dash for the front door and Mom got soaked...but we were HOME!

I'm glad to be home. I'm not eating that much yet, but as the meds kick in I'm sure I will get my appetite back. Plus Doc gave me an appetite stimulant so that will help too. Thank you all for your purrs and power of the paw. That means a lot to me. You guys are wonderful!

Love and head nudges,

My Thung ith Thut

Yep, that is what it is. And if I could speak, that is what I would have said. My thung ith thut! Translated...."My Tongue is Cut"

I wasn't eating like I normally do on Sunday and Monday, so Mom called the vet and they took me in on Tuesday morning. I wasn't throwing up or anything else, but I wasn't myself and seemed interested in food but then couldn't eat. Mom thought maybe I had a toothache.

Mom dropped me off at the vet and then called back to see what they had found. The doctor talked to Mom and said that they had given me some fluids and that she found a large laceration on my tongue and that was probably the reason I was not eating. She sent me home with meds for pain and told Mom to water down my wet food or give it to me by syringe if I won't eat it on my own.

Since taking the pain meds, I am eating on my own. No crunchies though, they are still too painful. Mom doesn't know what happened. Doc said I could have bitten my own tongue or cut it licking something sharp, like a cat food can lid or empty can. Mom is not sure how it happened. I am not usually an object chew-er so it is unlikely that I would put something strange in my mouth.

Sorry we have not been around much lately. Mom is still going a little crazy because of our Grammy. She did get to go to a nursing home/rehab center last Thursday and Mom has been going to see her and take her things that she needs. Gram has good days and bad days. Mom is wiped out from everything. So stressful.

Hope to see you guys soon. Skittles will be by to give her birthday thank yous and tell the snowball story and Skylar might be in to tell you about Aunt Anita's upcoming short stay.

Happy Thrpring!

Hi Everybody! My apologies for being so late with my thank you note. My secretary, who shall remain nameless to protect her identity (but I call her Mom), has been piled with other stuff and kept putting this on the back burner.

My health has been good and I will be going back for a re-check soon. It was supposed to be this coming Thursday but Mom may have to reschedule because she may not be able to leave work early. She and a few others will be out during the day for an e-book training. It is funny because it is in same area where my appointment is, but she is going for training in the morning and I am not scheduled till the afternoon. It could have almost been "Take Your Kitty to Work Day"!

I can't believe the time is flying by so fast. It was over three weeks ago when I was Diary of the Day! It seems like it was just last week. I had a wonderful day, there were presents, pictures, messages, comments and pictures and Mom gave me lots of extra lovies and attention.

I would like to thank.....
Ashlynne, my lovely Valentine, for the Crown
Sleeper, Samhain, Fearless, Socks and Owl for the Star
Tweetie for the Heart of Gold

Tate for the Shrimp
Grace for the Snowman
Angel Buddie for a Continued Healing Rosette

I hope I didn't miss anyone. If I did, please accept my apologies.

Special thanks to the talented furs who made pictures. I want to try and re-post them because they arrived a the time of the Great Flea Infestation!
Thank you for the pics: WeBeesSiamese, Friday and Dana

The spirit and the care, love and concern that we have been shown is truly wonderful. Thanks for being here with me! Thanks for making not only my Diary of the Day Special, but every day! You are the Best!

How Cool!

Wow! Mom opened her email and saw that I am Diary of the Day! Thanks Diary Gal! It is cool because I wrote about my sweet Valentine Ashlynne and my good report from the doctor.

Each day, I have been feeling better and better. Mom got an appetite stimulant from the doctor, but it turns out, I don't need it. I am eating pretty well now. My coat looks good and I have a little more spring in my step. I'm not back to jumping and tackling my wand toy, but will be soon.

It sure has been an exciting time lately. We got a new scratch lounger as a Valentine present. We played with the box it came in, the packing paper and with the scratcher. We all love it and are taking turns nicely. I also got a "get well" catnip mouse from Zach and Zoe. It came from River's shop, so you know it is good. We have been having so much fun.

Then it was all the excitement of Valentine's Day. Of the fun and romance in the air. All those catnip candy boxes we received, excellent, because I need to pick up a few pounds from when I was sick. They should do the trick nicely! There was also a fun Valentine/Mardi Gras party at Zach's Pool Hall this weekend. There was food, there was music and dancing. Our family had a great time.

And now this! Diary of the Day! I am so excited! What a great way to start the week. Thank you to all those who already stopped by so early this morning delivering messages and gifts and cool pictures. Sharing this day and having my friends all stop over is what makes this day so special. You guys rock!

Love, Rusty

First off, I have a lovely Valentine. Her name is Ashlynne . Just check out how pretty she is. Happy Valentine's Day Ashlynne! There is a party at Zach's pool hall this weekend, maybe we can grab a bite to eat and do some dancing.

Second, I was to the doctor today for a follow-up. They did an ultrasound and bloodwork and the doctor was very happy with the results. She has taken me off all the meds except the Ursidiol and wants to see me back in a month. I think the doctor has a crush on me, but hey, I already have a lovely valentine. Sorry Doc!

Thank you all for the candy, we have the sweetest friends! Thank you also for the purrs and prayers while I was sick. I know they helped tremendously!

Love you guys, my catster furmily!

Home, Sweet Home!

Boy am I glad to be home. Anyone who has ever spent time in a hospital knows, you don't get any rest. I had a drink, something to eat, got my pills and fell asleep in my cube. I didn't even come upstairs to bed, I just zonked out.

Today I am feeling better and am a little perkier. I have sniffed around the house and sat in the window to make sure the neighborhood is okay. I got my morning meds and had a little something to eat. My appetite isn't great, but it is coming back.

My docs were very nice and treated me very well. I had the emergency room doc and the internal medicine specialist on my case. Here is what the internal med. doc had to say....."we suspect that Rusty had an exacerbation of the previous illness in 2011: pancreatitis plus infection or inflammation of his liver and gall bladder (cholangiohepatitis). His chronic intermittent vomiting may be due to food allergies, IBD, chronic liver disease or chronic pancreatitis, Cats can have a condition known as Triaditis which involves chronic intermittent pancreatitis, liver disease and IBD, This is diagnosed via biopsies of the affected organs, Therapy revolves around treating the inflammation in the liver, pancreas and intestines, a hypoallergenic diet, and antibiotics if needed based on cultures. Rusty has responded well to supportive medications thus far. We would like to find a long-term solution to his illness which would involve a hypo-allergenic diet trial. However because of the numerous cats in the house, changing to a novel protein diet would be difficult. After his current signs have resolved we may consider starting him on a very low dose of a steroid to reduce inflammation in the intestines and pancreas."

I am on Ursdiol, Baytril, Famotidine, Amoxicillin and Metoclopramide (as needed). I have to go back next week for another ultrasound and bloodwork.

Mom is willing to try the novel protein diet. We know it will be expensive to change over our food, but this hospital bill wasn't cheap either. Maybe it would be worth it in the long run. We did buy some for Mrs. M, so Mom says she will at least see if I will eat and like it.

Thank you so much for your purrs, prayers and well wishes. They sure meant alot to me and my Mom. You guys are the best!

Love, Rusty

Visiting Hours

The Moms came up to visit me at the hospital today. The sweet nurse wrapped me in a blanket and brought me to a room to see them. As soon as I saw them my eyes lit up and I got very animated. I purred and purred. I walked around the room. I smelled all the smells of home on Mom's jacket. I told then that I am being very good and that I will try to eat now that my temp is finally coming down. They hope to send me home tomorrow, if I eat and my temp comes down under 102. It was 104 yesterday and 103 today, so things are looking brighter. Thanks for all your purrs, they are helping me and the Moms get through some pretty rough times.

Here is a pic of me Visiting Rusty in the hospital

Mom will get update call tomorrow morning, we will keep you posted.
Thanks. Love and purrs, Rusty

A night away from home

Mom had to take me to the Emergency Vet today. I got sick again last night and can't eat. She called my regular doc this morning but since it is Friday they would not get my blood work back until Monday the doc thought it would be best to go to the hospital. It is about 40 minutes away. I was there before, when I had my bout with pancreatitis.

They are very nice and Mom knows that they have really good doctors. They took blood from me and found that some of my values are pretty high, including the one that troubles the doctor and my Mom the most. My lymphocyte count was way too high. The emergency doc wants the internal specialist to see me and to have her do an ultrasound to see what is going on in there. She was there, but in surgery, so hopefully she will see me yet today. They have me on fluids and something to soothe my stomach. I was very good and actually talkative with the nurses.

Mom gave me a hugs and kisses and we talked for a while. I will miss her, but I know they are going to try and help me so I will be brave. But please purr for me, we are nervous about what might be going on.

When we have more info, we will let you know.

Do Cats Get the Flu?

January 29th 2013 3:39 pm
[ Leave A Comment | 10 people already have ]

I have heard that there are alot of cases of the flu going around. There is that cold-like flu and then there is that stomach flu. Can cats get the stomach flu? Oh man, was I sick!

Last night I didn't feel good. I threw up several times. Mom gave me meds and they came up too. Nothing would stay down. I was miserable. The others were miserable too because Mom took away the crunchy food. After about 12:30 AM I fell asleep and stayed in bed all morning. Mom called the Doctor right after they opened and they said to bring me in. The doctor took my temperature and took me for an x-ray. She kept me in the back and gave me Sub-Q fluids and an injection for my nausea. I came home and slept. The doctor isn't sure what caused it, but wants Mom to give me a bland diet (which means boiled chicken---I do love my boiled chicken. The doc wants Mom to call tomorrow and let her know how I am doing.

If you can spare a few purrs for me I would appreciate it. Mom always worries as soon as I get sick that it could be pancreatitis again.
