I went to the Vet on Monday night and that young doctor had the nerve to call me an old lady! It was said sweetly, but still, that wasn't nice. She should show some respect to her elders. MOL!
My visit went pretty well. The doctor thought that I looked good and that my weight was good too. She is concerned though, because I have been on a steroid since last year. She is worried that I could become diabetic from taking it. She gave me my exam and felt around my belly. She could not feel the mass that she felt last year. She asked if she could give me an x-ray to compare with ones she took last year. We did this and she does not see any of what was on there last time. She is not sure what really happened to me. There was a mass and now it is gone. Because Mom chose to not do anything invasive to me, we may not know what it was. The doctor wonders if it could be something like IBS.
She wants to wean me off my steroids and change my diet and see what happens. She gave us a few cans of Hills Science Diet ID. I liked it on Monday night, but then would not eat it after that. I have a little bit of an upper respiratory thing going on too ( Mom says I have the snuffles) so food doesn't really smell that appealing right now) Mom is giving me the tuna and has started to taper off my steroid doses.
If you can spare a few purrs for me, I would appreciate it. Since I may not like this Hills stuff, what else do you guys recommend? I sure will miss my Fancy Feast!
Oh, here is the other kicker. The doctor was looking at my eyes and they were very dilated. She took me in the back for an eye exam and wanted to take my blood pressure too. She said that high pressure can cause the eyes to dilate like that. She wants to see me next week with Rusty just to check my blood pressure. Mom is very mad, not at this doctor, but the one we had two years ago. Our favorite vets retired and a new doctor bought their practice. When I was there with the new doctor, Mom asked about my eyes and the doctor just kind of blew it off and said, "She is old, probably has cataracts" Mom had to pressure him to even get him to turn out the light and exam her eyes. Mom was pissed and that was the last time we went to him. He had hired two other doctors and we always request the one we have now. She is nicer, more thorough, and although not quite as experienced, but we believe, more knowledgeable. If I do indeed have high blood pressure, it could have been caught over two years ago! mom is kicking herself for not making a bigger deal of it at the time, but she trusted what the doctor said. Grrrrrrr.
Much love from "The Old Lady",

Well, the vet you have now knows her stuff. I had undiagnosed high blood pressure, and it can lead to blindness. If you look at my pictures, you will see how dilated my eyes were.
We hope you start eating the Hills again, but if you don't, remember that the important thing is for you to eat - even if you have to eat your Fancy Feast. Mawmee has our cats on FF turkey - staying away from the fish varieties is better.
Sending lots of purrs your way!
I'll be purring for you, Old Lady!
It's IBD sweetie, not IBS. IBD causes thickening of the intestines so that might have been what he saw. How great though that they can't find it anymore!!! Yes, I agree with Sugar, just eat, never mind specifically what it is as long as you eat. And yes, high blood pressure is certainly serious so please have that checked. Purring for a young a heart Mrs. Murphy!
Oops, that was a typo. The s was right next to the d . I had double checked my entry before I posted and had "I" instead of "eye" too. Mom's coffee hadn't kicked in yet.
MOL, I never even thought of that. That the S is next to the D. Typists usually just put IBS cause they are used to that in humans.
Mrs. Murphy, we think you should pick the names you are addressed with, you have earned that right!
Very happy to hear that the mass was not there and that you are doing well overall. You gave us quite a scare last year!
We are purring for you sweetie, we never say old lady Mom taught us to respect the elders cause they are the elder wise.
Mom has learned over the years that if you don't like how the Vets treat us or you don't feel they are doing enough and you still have concerns...LOOK FOR ANOTHER VET! it took Mom over 2 years to find our current Vet...I have had URI since Mom adopted me, I kept having to go to the vet and I kept getting sick, Mom wanted them to go one step further to figure out what was going on...it wasn't just URI...my vet now took an x ray and guess what I have asthma...I am doing so much better now I have the inhaler...it paid off for Mom to find another vet and keeping going to different ones until one listened to Mom.
Yes the important thing is for you to eat, Mom has never ever been able to get us to eat the food Vets want us to eat. Our Vet says to let them eat what they like....Xena should be eating special food, she ate it 2 times and then refused..so you are not alone in not liking food they want us to eat.
We hope they take good care of you and you will be feeling and doing better soon...tell your Mom to never give up and change Vets if she isn't comfortable. After all she is your voice!
Zeke, Mom and family
Alex, that is probably why I missed it when I went back. It looked right on some level. I ate my "tuna soup" today and Mom made chicken tonight and I had some of that.
Vets! Whhat do they know! Four and a half yars ago, I had to go to the ER because I was dizzy and couldn't walk straight. An ovenight stay and lots of tests later, mom was able to get my regular vet on the phone who said to take me home. This after the ER said I might not make it, whatever that means. Turns out I had an ear infection and vestibular disorder, which cleared up. So last year, my reliable vet goes and retires! Now what! I got a nice new vet, young, and she leaves the practice! So now I go see another vet in the practice, and this one gives me yet another senior screen, when I had one a gew months ago, checks my T4 for my hyperthyriod condition, says I have an ear infection and some arthritis, then tells mom to bring me back to check my white blood cells again because the count was high. I thought, lady, won't it be high with an ear infection??? Then she says she wants to see how I am concentrating my urine. This, after she says my kidneys and bladder were fine!!! Mommy is looking for a new vet because she thinks this vet wants to buy a new car, if you know what I mean! Ok, I have had a few "accidents", but my legs are stiff and I can't run like I used to! I love to eat though. I have Fancy Feast and Hill's prescription diet c/d( that's what we started eating when my grandmom had kidney stones). I like Hill's. I think you should eat whatever you want as long as it doesn't make you sick. I will be purring for you. Remember, you're only as old as you feel!
People call me old too. Even my humans call me old, and they are all older than me! The youngest one of them is 23 and I'm not even 20 yet!
Old lady indeed! You were nicer than I would have been!!! Hmmmph!
Glad your thingy is gone. Our vet says that older cats can be like older folks, more sensitive to some food. Eating is more important than certain foods you eat.
Just take it easy....we know how hard it is finding a new good vet.
You don't look all that old to me, and I'm one step away from a kitten - MOL! The only thing the Mama wanted to add was about the food part. She thought maybe if you felt the special diet was important, that you could mix some FF in with it - that might make it taste "right".
We hope your blood pressure checks out okay, Mrs. Murphy. It's good this vet wants to check it, though.
OH so happy dat mass iz GONE, Mrs Murphy~! What??? U not an Old lady~ Furry purrty 'n dey should NOT furget it~! Spawcial diets, poo, I agree wif Fearless, maybe mixin' Ur furvurite FF in wif dat food ya gotta eat? FF does taste good 'n we'd really miss ours too! Sounds like U gotta really good vet now. Hey, look at you - you got a DDP for being a kewl senior cat - take that vet man! And Zoey told us not to give her any gifties since she'd already gotten plenty, so I'll give them to you! Hehehe...
I can't stay on long but wanted to say that, in my opinion, the best food for you is one you will eat! Other foods that you just leave on the plate are useless. While the vet is no doubt good, I remember when you would hardly eat at all, and I just don't want to see you back in that shape. Perhaps your mom could try half and half for a while till you get used to it? Or add the oil from a can of tuna to it? I sure hope that works. As always, I've got my paws together for you and am sending good positive energy your way.
