An Open Letter to Catster/Dogster & SayMedia,
I have been a member of Catster since April 25, 2009 and a Plus member for 497 days. In this time, our family has grown and we have made many friends. We laughed with them, we cried with them. We were there with them through surgeries, , illness, deaths and the agonizing times when somefur was missing. We celebrated when new kittens made their arrivals, when Ingen and Linus were found, and so many other great occasions. But now there is sadness….
It seems our friends are leaving. Long-time, true-blue, loyal friends. We don’t want them to go!
HQ, please make some changes. The members are not chasing other members away. I believe, this one is on you. You ask that we abide by the site guidelines taken from this site as quoted below…
Sitewide Community Guidelines
“Because people of all ages love animals, Catster is a family-friendly site. All content on Catster --text, images and video, including the content on the pages of posted external links--must be appropriate for all ages.”
“Content that contains profanity; is sexually explicit; depicts the torture and abuse of animals; or contains graphic, descriptive and lengthy portrayals of serious violence against animals; blood, injury, and/or death are not allowed on Catster.”
Skylar says....Fine, we all do this pretty well. Why do you need your own guidelines?
More from the site guidelines......
Catster's editors take it upon themselves to cover the important cat issues of the day - and often the stories we relay require a mature audience. On some days we'll have articles that will have readers reaching for tissue or outraged at a sad event in which our favorite four-legged creatures were involved. Our editorial team does not shy away from taking the abusers of our feline friends to task, and sometimes the message we have for these subpar members of society is not for children.
All editorial sections of the site follow a different set of rules from the Community sections of the site. Our editorial items are for adults who can agree to disagree on occasion, but are respectful of each other's opinions regardless.
Since our content is for adults, we expect readers to act like adults. While we do not have the resources for constant comment moderation, we will remove comments that are abusive (and contain personal attacks or racist epithets) at our discretion."
The nature of the articles lately; the skulls on the mantle, the helicopter cat…that wouldn’t be appropriate in my diary. But it is okay for you to post? I don’t see anything that stops a child from reading your pages that you say, require a mature audience. Come on, why don’t we all play by the same rules? And I don’t want my standards lowered to yours.
I pay for membership to the site, some of our friends do too. I have bought things from those who advertise on your site. If members continue to leave, advertisers lose revenue and may pull out too. This was a great place. Please, don’t turn into a litter box. Don’t make our friends hissing mad and running away.
"Always Room for Improvement
If you have ideas for the Community Guidelines please share them with us. The community is always changing and the guidelines should always stay up-to-date."
Skylar says....You say so for yourself….. let it be so….We’ll do our part, how about you?
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerly, Skylar and Mom Michele

Well, you may have noticed that I haven't been around very much. Blame my secretary! Things have been absolutely nuts around here. Let me see if I can catch us all up to speed. The humans went away and then they came back. Aunt Anita came and then she left. Grandma was sick, but now she is feeling better. Mom had a good friend pass away and now she has been helping pack up his things for his family. My other Mommy that lives with us fell down the steps and fractured her tibia. No, we didn't trip her. Now she is in a cast and on crutches and cannot put any weight on it yet. So Mom has been doing alot of extra stuff around the house. Our computer is on its last leg, our new tower is here but Mom needs to get all the stuff off the old one.
Funny story. Grandma was here to visit one day last week. She got sort of mad at Mom way back when we got Ivan and Percy. In fact, when she told her about Ivan, Grandma got irritated and said we had too many cats. So Mom never told her about Percy, Skittles or Daisy. She did wind up telling her about Roni and Maedia. So Grandma only thinks we have 6 cats. Grandma was not here since before she got her kneed replaced, because she couldn't make the steps. So last week she decides that she wants to stop in and see everybody. Oh Oh! Grandma comes in and Rusty and I greet her at the door. Ok so far! Skittles runs out of the room, but Grandma never saw her because we had her distracted with our handsome-ness! Percy, Skittles and Daisy head for upstairs, thinking they will be safe. Ivan comes to greet Grandma and so does Roni. Still OK! Grandma then decides she wants to use the bathroom (upstairs) and go see Murphy (also upstairs) Triple Oh Oh! Mom goes up the steps ahead of grandma and shoos Percy into the back bedroom, where he remains. Murphy comes to greet Grandma and be fussed over and the others remain hidden. It was absolutely hysterical that the cats that Grandma doesn't know about stayed hidden. It is as if they knew that they weren't supposed to be seen. Maedia didn't come out either, but she is always shy when we have company.
Mom sure has a full plate lately. But we have been very good. We were very entertained for a while with the robin's nest on the front porch. Last Friday the three babies took their first flight. ( Sorry Tabbies, but hey, check out the picture on my page of Al Tuna!)
I'm very sorry if we missed any special occasions. We'll try to be around more often as time permits. Purrs and head nudges, Skylar

I am a diary pick today and this as been the only bright moment in our house this week. Maybe in the last two weeks even.
Mom's Mom (our Grandma) was in the emergency room 4 times in 8 days. She was having horrible nosebleeds and they can't figure out why. She is on blood pressure meds, but she is not on blood thinners. They think it might be a sinus infection. Thank goodness Mom isn't squeamish about blood, because she sure saw alot of it. This started happening before she went away and Aunt Anita and Mom's cousin checked in on grandma while Mom was away.
Then Thursday came. Mom started her day at 3AM with a call from the hospital that Grandma was being discharged from the ER. Turns out, Grandma has a bad nosebleed at night, called 911 and Mom didn't even know until the hospital called to say "Come and get her".
Later that afternoon, Mom was home, trying to get a nap, when the phone rang. More bad news. One of Mom's best friends died of a massive heart attack. Mom was exhausted, devastated and an emotional wreck. She made a bunch of phone calls and went to bed.
Friday she went with friends to his house to help the family clean and get things ready for the funeral. She also did Grandma's banking and got her groceries. She was gone most of the day.
******A note from Mom. I truly am heartbroken. I haven't cried like this since my father passed away. He was such a good friend. He knew me better than I knew myself. He loved to text (every time I hear that chime, I still expect it to be him), he loved to talk, but he was also an awesome listener that knew just the right things to say to make you feel better. We would sometimes meet for coffee and a 10 minute chat in the Dunkin Donuts parking lot (We both liked Krispy Kreme better, but that was too far away). I loved him like a big brother. I have no regrets, I always told him how much I appreciated his friendship and how much he meant to me. I just wish we could have had more time together. I miss him so much.

Hi Everybody! Guess what time it is? It's Aunt Anita time! Yep, Aunt Anita is coming to stay with us over the weekend. Mom is going to Altoona for a bowling tournament and we are staying home and having a party!
Some of our new friends have not heard of Aunt Anita. She is Mom's good friend and co-worker for many, many years. She always comes to stay with us when Mom goes away. She adores us and spoils us rotten. She used to have cats but when they went to the bridge they got a rescue dog named Piper.
Aunt Anita hasn't been here to stay with us since the fall. She has been here to visit, but not to stay. She is coming over tomorrow night to just refresh her memory for where all our stuff is and to get the rundown on who gets what to eat. Then she will be back to stay with us Friday.
I have to gather the little ones together and school them on what we do when Aunt Anita comes to visit. Mom tells us that we have to be on our best behavior, but that is not true. We can get away with just about anything, if we can give her "the mushy eyes" You know that adorable look we give the humans when we want something or when they catch us being bad. You kind of put your head down, seductively swish the tail and then slowly turn your head and blink at them.
She has let me eat on the kitchen counter (Mom would have a fit). But I just give her the eyes or a head bonk and she melts like jello. Want extra treats? Want to be brushed? Want to sit in the open window even if it is 50 outside? Just use your talents!
Mom is taking her tablet and got a room with wi-fi so we hope we can stay connected and not miss anything. Stay safe everyone and if you are in the area, come party with us and Aunt Anita!
Love and purrs, Skylar

Funny story.... I think you have to have cats to appreciate this....
Mom was a Continuing Education workshop today for her job. There were about 60 people there. She was sitting with some people that she knew and some strangers. The ladies got talking about pets and one of the women, who Mom does know, asks her "So, how many cats do you have now"? Mom smiled at her and said, "9". The lady said, "Really, Can you name them?"
Was it a quiz? Did she not believe Mom? I guess the question could have been asked differently. So Mom goes through our names and ages. And the lady asks, "Where do you put them?"
Ummmm?????? It's not like my Mom says she collects 6ft statues. Where do you put them? Oh, how to answer....Down the cellar. Out in the garage. Up in the attic. In storage boxes.
I don't know about your house, but we can't really put a cat anywhere that they don't want to be.
She realized the humor of her comments and we got a good laugh. Besides having 9 cats, the other thing Mom has is a sense of humor.
But I have to ask....Do you have cats? Where do you put them?

Here's the good news! I am out of lock-up. And I am a Diary Pick today.
I am still on the antibiotic, sneezing once in a while, but feeling so much better. Thank you so much for your purrs, prayers, gifts and easing Mom's worried mind.
Here's the bad news.....Pretty much every cat, with the exception of Rusty and Murphy, are sneezing! It is like there are sneezes from every corner of the house. Mom is pretty sure she saw the walls move when Ivan sneezed.
Roni wound up at the vet yesterday, because her fever was very high. She is doing much better today. She in turn gave it to her sister Maedia, who passed it to Ivan, who gave it to Percy, who it turn gave it to Skittles. By the way, it all started with Daisy! Who is fine now, but lonely because all her playmates want to do is sleep! Rusty actually played chase with her today.
The doctor said that it pretty much has to run its course. The fever is actually the bodies way of fighting the infection. Unless the fever gets too high, we should just let nature take over and do its thing.
Mom is frustrated that we all got sick. She cleans like a fanatic, and still we picked this up. She is forever cleaning boxes, running the sweeper, washing blankets, cleaning our bowls and the fountain. She wishes she could have prevented it.
Thanks for all your love,

Hi Everybody! I wanted to let you know that I am starting to feel better. I am eating and drinking but still sneezing. Mom does think my congestion is breaking up and that things sound "looser". I am still sneezing, but nowhere near as much.
Mom brought me into the bathroom today when she took her shower. She shut the door and I took a steam bath. It felt pretty good. She sat me down on the toilet seat when she got in the shower, but I felt adventurous and wound up between the shower curtain and the liner. I even stuck my head in the shower and startled Mom!
I am still in solitary confinement, but I don't really mind. I'm getting my rest and enjoying having the window perch all to myself. Rusty, Roni and Daisy have all been spotted sitting outside my door. I'm not so sure that they miss me; I think they miss the view of the backyard from the perch.
Mom checked in with our regular vet and they said just to keep in touch and check in every day. It sounds like they don't want to see me! MOL! I must have really been a terror the last time I was there!
Thank you all for your purrs, prayers, comments and gifts and well wishes. They mean alot to us, especially Mom who was really nervous! Mom was at Petco yesterday and was talking to a guy that works there. He is a "Cat Guy" and Mom often talks to him. Mom mentioned the lysine treats, our Petco doesn't carry them, but he told her of a local store that has them. Mom is going to get us some and the Digestive aid that Lacey recommended, since now two of us have been on antibiotics!
The Petco Cat Guy made Mom smile yesterday. When she was at the register, they always ask about adding a donation to either the Petco Foundation or the Petco Local Fund. (We forget the proper names). Mom rounded up her a couple of bucks, not much, just to make an even amount. Cat Guy grinned at her and said "Are you sure? , you have 9 cats, we should be donating to you? It was a sweet! I wouldn't go that far....but I think we should get a group discount! MOL!

Today was such a rotten day. Mom had to take me to the Emergency Vet. I started sneezing on Thursday night and still was sneezing today and having trouble breathing through my nose. I had my midnight snack last night, but didn't want to eat today. I didn't even come downstairs this morning.
So, into the carrier for the 35 minute ride. I was quiet in the car, another sign. We had a really nice doctor, who even remembered my brother
Rusty from when he was there in the fall (He must have made quite an impression).
It seems I have an Upper Respiratory Infection. I got antibiotics and an appetite stimulant to make me eat. I did perk up and even manage to get a few good growls in at the doctor. They wanted to do a chest x-ray, but doctor felt they would have had to sedate me and mom doesn't like to do that because of my heart defects.
So we came back home, I had a little bit of canned chicken and took a nap. Mom has me separated from the others so that no one else gets sick and so that they let me get some rest. Mom offered me a midnight snack tonight, but I really didn't want anything.
I guess we will give the meds a chance to work and see how I am feeling in the morning. We do have to follow up with our regular doctor, Mom has to call them on Monday.
Mom is worried about me, especially because of my heart problems. The doctor agreed that it is more serious because the infection can settle around the heart. Mom is hunt down the e-mail address for my cardiologist (his practice is in the same location but has a new name) and check in with him.
I am so glad that Ollie's brother Alfie just agreed to be our Family Guardian Angel. He is taking all 9 of us under his big wings. I feel better just knowing he is there, watching over me. (Funny thing...on the way to the ER Vet we were following a delivery truck that had all of its information in french. Mom got closer to him and it turns out he was from Quebec. We zipped along in the passing lane behind him for a while. It was a sure sign that Alfie was there with us.
Please keep me in your purrs and prayers. Me and Mom would really appreciate it. Thanks! Love, Skylar

You may remember me writing about our cold weather visitor, Baby. She was a stray that was living in our yard. She was trapped and spayed in December and then released back to the yard. She had the nice warm box, closed in under the picnic table.
You may recall she wound up in our mudroom when it got really cold in January. You might have heard me ask "where is this leading?".
Some of you were correct! Of course, she would wind up inside.
From the mudroom, to the kitchen, to the rest of the house. Yep, she is here to stay. Mom was hesitant to add her page; she wanted to make sure that things would work out first. If taking her in was going to cause problems for any of us established residents, Mom knew she would have to try to find her another home.
She is actually very good. A little shy with the humans at times, but on the whole, she has been no problem at all. She eats with us & has been using the litterbox faithfully. She loves to play; either by herself or with us. She loves to wrestle and chase Percy. They go racing from one end of the house to the other. She seems to understand that she is the new kid on the block and found her place in the order. She doesn't even try to play with Rusty or Murphy, although she will give them a sweet little head nudge from time to time.
We had originally named her Baby, but every time we called her Maedia would turn her head (because we sometimes call her Maed-ee) The sound was just too close. Then we tried Babette, but she didn't seem to like it ( How Mom would know that is beyond me!) So we settled on Daisy and all seem to be in agreement that it works (even Daisy!)
So please, come see my new little sister, visit Daisy and send us a friend request.

Please read Art Blakely's diary entry about a Catster family that desperately needs help. They are looking for homes for six beautiful cats.
Please also keep them in your thoughts and purrs. Thanks.
