Charlie was a surprise birthday present to my then boyfriend, now husband. He calls Charlie the "gift that was for you." It was completely spontaneous - the day of my husband's birthday I went to a shelter looking for a male orange tabby, and there was Charlie, long hair and all.

Rescue shelter had the following info: his "Mom" was a long haired "kept" cat, the father a stray short-hair.
