    Okocat Cat Litter Reviewed

There are several cat litter brands on the market, so why should you choose Okocat? What’s special about their litter? Okocat doesn’t produce clay and corn litter like many other brands. Instead, they produce litter from renewable wood and paper fibers that are sewer-safe and great for controlling odors. To get a good idea of what you can expect from this litter, we will thoroughly examine Okocat to show you what it’s all about.

Who Makes Okocat & Where Is It Produced?

Healthy Pet is a company committed to producing its pet products sustainably and ethically. Okocat is one of the brands underneath the Healthy Pet banner, along with Carefresh and Simply Pine.

Healthy Pet is owned by J. Rettenmaier & Sohne Group, one of the world’s leading organic fiber companies. It makes sense that a company committed to “green” plant fiber technology would produce cat litter made entirely from eco-friendly wood and paper fibers.

Which Types of Cats is Okocat Best Suited For?

Okocat is well suited for any cat, though some very picky cats might be averse to the texture at first as it’s different from other types of litter. If your cat has always used clay litter, the new texture will be quite a change. You can easily get around this by mixing the Okocat litter with your current litter for one or two changes before making the full switch.

Which Types of Cats Might Do Better with a Different Brand?

One of the only problems with Okocat litter is that it’s incredibly lightweight, which makes it easy to track and spread around. If your cat tends to be a messy cat, you might have even more mess to deal with when using Okocat. In that case, you can use a heavier litter like a standard clay cat litter such as Purina Tidy Cats with Clay Multi-Cat Clumping Litter.

Discussion of the Primary Ingredients (Good & Bad)

What makes Okocat litter special is that it’s not made from the materials usually used for cat litter, such as clay and corn. Instead, Okocat is made from eco-friendly and natural fibers from 100% reclaimed wood.

Not only do they come straight from the earth, but these fibers are completely recyclable back into the earth as everything is biodegradable. It’s even sewer-friendly, so you can flush it down the drain instead of creating more plastic waste by filling plastic bags with your cat litter each week.

    Wood

Wood is a renewable and completely natural material. However, the wood in Okocat litter wasn’t obtained by chopping down trees. Instead, it’s made entirely from reclaimed wood. Moreover, this makes Okocat safe for the environment, which is part of Okocat’s goal. In fact, in German, oko means “eco” or ecological. It’s so important to this brand that it’s part of their name!

The wood fibers used for Okocat litter are free from synthetic chemicals and toxic additives, so they’re safe for your cat. Even better, unlike clay litter formulas, Okocat is practically dust-free. It also clumps far better than most litter made from traditional materials.

Okocat litter is great at odor control. It has no scents or perfumes to help in this regard, but wood has its own pleasant natural odor, and it’s highly absorbent, making it excellent at stifling the odors from your cat’s waste. Wood fibers are also very lightweight, but they can cause a bit of a mess.

    Flushable Cat Litter

Traditional clay cat litter and even litter made from food materials are not usually safe to flush down the drain. But Okocat litter is sewer-safe and flushable, making it even more eco-friendly since you won’t have to add another plastic bag to the landfill. Plus, it’s far easier to flush the old litter away than to walk it out to the trash can!

    Eco-Friendly & All-Natural

Okocat is a brand devoted to being eco-friendly and responsible for its environmental impact. All the materials used in Okocat litter are responsibly sourced from reclaimed materials. Even the corrugated box that Okocat litter comes in can be recycled. The wood fibers used for this litter are environmentally safe, biodegradable, and safe to be flushed down the toilet.

    Excellent Odor Control & Clumping

Okocat is available in clumping and non-clumping formulas. If you use one of the clumping formulas, you can generally expect tight clumps that form quickly and are easy to remove from the litter box. However, not everyone had the same experience.

With no scents or perfumes, Okocat has no added odor control, but it doesn’t need it. The wood fibers are highly absorbent, and they do a good job of negating the smell of your cat’s waste. Plus, they give off a natural odor of wood, which is pleasant without adding fragrance.

    Superlight Litter Makes More Mess

Wood fibers are incredibly lightweight when compared to clay. The downside to this is that it makes it much easier to spread around. While the fibers tend not to stick to cats’ paws quite as much as standard clay litter, they get thrown around very easily. You’ll likely find this litter makes a mess around the litter box. For this reason, many users of this litter keep their litter box on a mat, making cleaning the immediate area around the litterbox much easier.

Reviews of the 3 Best Okocat Cat Litter Formulas

    1. Okocat Original Premium Wood Clumping Cat Litter

Okocat Original Premium Wood Clumping Cat Litter

Okocat is a great alternative to litters made from more traditional materials. Unfortunately, many litters made from all-natural materials have been poor performers in the past, but the natural wood fibers used in Okocat perform as well as any traditional cat litter medium.

Though this litter has no added scents or fragrances, it still does an excellent job of stopping foul odors from forming. The wood fibers are highly absorbent and can quickly absorb any pet waste. Also, the clumps form easily and aren’t difficult to separate from the remaining good litter. You’ll find this formula to be far less dusty than clay litters as well.

What’s special about this litter is how eco-friendly it is. Not only is it biodegradable, but it can also be flushed down the toilet. The wood used to make the fibers is reclaimed and sourced responsibly, and even the box can be recycled.

    Pros
    • Good odor control
    • Plant-based and natural
    • Biodegradable and eco-friendly
    • Highly absorbent odor control
    • 99% dust-free
    Cons
    • Lightweight fibers spread around easily

    2. Okocat Super Soft Clumping Wood Unscented Cat Litter

Okocat Super Soft Clumping Wood Unscented Cat Litter

This super-soft clumping wood cat litter from Okocat isn’t much different from their other blends, except for one fundamental way. While all of the Okocat litters are pretty soft, this formula is made to be ultra-soft, so it’s easy on sensitive paws. If your cat has had problems with litter hurting their paws in the past, it might benefit from trying this super-soft cat litter instead.

Of course, since the blend is different from the standard Okocat litter, it comes with a higher price tag. Okocat is already a pretty pricey litter, so it isn’t exactly economical. However, it is eco-friendly, as it’s still made from responsibly sourced “green” materials, just like other litters in the Okocat family.

    Pros
    • Super soft fibers are gentle on paws
    • Made from responsibly sourced wood fibers
    • All-natural and biodegradable
    • No fragrances, synthetic chemicals, GMOs, or toxic dyes
    Cons
    • More expensive than other Okocat litter

    3. Okocat Dust-Free Unscented Non-Clumping Paper Pellet Cat Litter

Okocat Dust-Free Unscented Non-Clumping Paper Pellet Cat Litter

If your cat suffers from respiratory problems or you have allergies to dust, the Okocat dust-free unscented non-clumping paper pellet cat litter might be the litter for you. Instead of the wood-fiber litter you get in other Okocat formulas, this one uses paper pellets, so there’s no dust.

Unfortunately, the paper pellets are even worse with tracking than other Okocat litters, and the mess tends to spread out pretty far. Still, this litter is flushable, responsibly sourced, and completely safe for cats and the environment. You’re still getting all of the Okocat benefits but in a safer form for sensitive lungs. However, you should expect to pay a premium for this litter as it’s one of the most expensive on the Okocat roster.

    Pros
    • 100% dust-free paper pellets
    • Flushable
    • Great for cats with respiratory issues
    • Responsibly sourced and eco-friendly
    Cons
    • One of the most expensive Okocat litters
    • Excessive tracking

    What Other Users Are Saying

We have a lot of experience with many cat litters, including Okocat. Thanks to that experience, we’re confident in our opinions regarding each cat litter we test. At the same time, we realize that reading opinions from other real-world users of Okocat litter is beneficial. So, we searched through Chewy and Amazon reviews to see what people thought about Okocat after using it with their cats, and the following quotes are straight from those reviews.

The following reviews are from Chewy. If you’d like to read more of them, follow this link.

“I think this is the best litter we’ve ever used.”

“It’s as organic as litter can get, plus it’s lightweight, very little dust, covers the litter extremely well, and no smell at all. The ONLY complaint I have is that it tracks a lot due possibly to the fact that the contents are very light and they tend to get out of the box easily.”

“We started using Okocat after learning that The Cat Cafe in San Diego uses it for their rescue cats. It is the best litter we’ve ever used! We have 5 cats, and they took to it immediately. We use the original clumping Okocat, and it clumps really well, and there’s just no urine odor ever. We HIGHLY recommend it.”

While a good number of Chewy reviews were positive, some people felt quite differently.

“I hate this litter. It tracks everywhere, it smells so bad, and it takes forever to scoop because the clumping doesn’t work very well.”

“Doesn’t clump well. When sifting, the clumps break apart. It is frustrating. Plus, it tracks all over the room.”

On Amazon, the consensus was pretty similar. We always like to check out their reviews before we invest in a new product, especially for our picky kitties! To read Amazon reviews on Okocat, click here.

    Conclusion

Okocat litter is one of the best all-natural litters on the market. It breaks away from traditional formulas made from clay, corn, wheat, and other similar materials. Instead, Okocat is created from wood fibers that are renewable, ethically sourced, and environmentally friendly, which is all part of the Okocat mission. In fact, the wood fibers come from reclaimed wood!

Not only are the materials used to make Okocat litter sourced morally, but they’re also safe for the environment. The litters are biodegradable and sewer-safe, so you can even flush them down the drain without worry. You’ll get no dust from Okocat like you’re used to with clay litters. However, Okocat is incredibly lightweight, so it tends to get spread outside of the litter box, making for a larger mess to clean. But if concern about the environment is one of your top priorities, few cat litters are made more responsibly than Okocat.
