Let's Rock and Roll

We were sure rocking and rolling yesterday around 1 PM but all is safe and sound with minimal damage for a 5.8 earthquake. We live about 30-40 minutes north and east from the epicenter and about 20-30 miles north dn east from the nuclear plant close to the epicenter.

Around 12:15 Maumi came home from school to pick up more materials for her classroom. When she tried to leave a bit after 12:30, I sensed something a foot so backed up to the door trying to keep her from going, when suddenly Pretty Girl and Baby dashed upstairs. It was my job to keep Maumi safe but she didn't listen. She told me 'don't worry Bastet, girls, Maumi will be back in a few hours." Then she closed the door, got in her car and drove back to school. I was frantic to see Maumi go as I watched her through the side windows by the door.

Maumi must have just gottend to school when it began. The noise was terrible, the shaking starting and I hid under the twin bed in my kitten room. I heard things falling in the closets, that is where Pretty Girl was hiding. She dashed out and I let her lay by me. We heard a terrible crash in the garage. I heard the medicine cabinets in the bathrooms upstairs creak open. Pretty Girl and I just hoped Maumi was safe.

Maumi came home around 2:30 and was pretty calm but Baby, Pretty Girl and I were still shaken. We could still feel shaking going on and weren't sure we were safe.

When Maumi checked the house, she found that Dad's stack of old bowling balls in the boxes had toppled to the floor, the car jack had rolled from the walls, and brooms, rakes, hoes, all hanging lawn equipment had fallen. There were some pictures and candle holders on the wall that had fallen, and some boxes in the closets on the floor. Everything that was still hanging on the walls not toggled to the walls, was crooked.

Maumi is off from school today and students will return from summer break tomorrow. But she has to take Dad to the doctor. During the earthquake, Dad was rushing to get somewhere safe and did something to his right knee and doesn't remember what what he did. He can't drive a car, bend it, and the pain is excrutiating to walk. He is using Maumi's cane from her injury to walk.

We were very fortunate that there is no serious damage or injury. I remain on alert because of the aftershocks. The biggest one last night aroudn 8:00 PM a little of 4.0. Maumi and Dad were talking to nighbors outside and felt that. We are fine and hope everyone else is as well.

Thank you. We are located in a hotspot here in Virginia which has some quakes, but this is the worse since 1897.

We live about 60 miles south of DC and about the same distance north of Richmond. We are a few miles north of the Louisa County border but the epicenter was a bit west in that county. My guess is that we are 30-40 miles from the epicenter of the quake. My sister was more concerned with the nuclear plant that is approx. 10-20 miles southwest from us. It automatically shut itself down when the quake hit.

We are glad all of you are safe.
We felt it here in PA and when Pops came home he made sure we were all OK. He told us that he thought someone was playing around by standing behind him and rocking his chair. When he turned around there was no one there and then he noticed his cubicle swaying.
Purrs to my very pretty lady Bastet!

Thank you Timmy T. It was scary for furs and humans alike. There hasn't been one this severe in VA since 1897 when according to today's paper it was 5.9.

It was a scary moment for humans and furs. Several schools in the area are damaged and Maumi hasn't heard as of yet if school will be in session tomorrow. It was a blessing the students were not in school at the time of the quake.
