Arrival Story: We kept seeing this bony little Manx on our deck catching & eating birds, lizards, bugs, whatever she could find. Not wishing to encourage a stray (and not realizing at that point that she already lived with us) we didn't feed her or anything ... until one day we stepped out the front door just in time to see several tiny shadows slipping under the edge of the house. She had quietly given birth to five kittens there.
Well, our attitude changed quickly and we started feeding her twice a day to help offset the body weight that this little cat was rapidly turning into kitten milk. It put the brakes on her weight loss and we slowly began to "tame" her (or did she tame us?) Soon the kittens were joining her at the food bowl, though the entire bunch made it plain they had no intentions of becoming domesticated. However, Mikki did allow us to pet her while she was eating, and soon came running when we brought out food.
Lisa brought one of the kittens inside one morning, a little male we dubbed "Stubbs". Since he was weaned and more friendly than his littermates we decided to do a trial run and kept him in the bedroom with us that night. Oh, the meowing! But by morning he seemed to have accepted his new home and has been with us ever since. We weren't so lucky in our efforts to tame the other kittens, and one bit me on the thumb which lead to an infection requiring the treatment of a doctor. They discovered I had dangerously high blood pressure! Now under regular treatment for that (and the high cholesterol they also discovered) I thank that kitten for inadvertently saving my life, because the doctor said I was headed for a stroke as sure as anything.
We took the four "rotten" kittens to the Humane Society who said they were sure the little boogers would be adopted due to their incredible cuteness (two had half-tails). Mikki allowed herself to be trapped and went to the vet where she calmly agreed to be spayed, along with Stubbs who agreed to be neutered.
Mikki was quite content to remain outdoors even through her second Texas winter, which can be extremely cold at times but thankfully short. However during this last winter she made her way to a small crack in the wall between the edge of the bathtub and the wall and began meowing at me while I was sitting there reading a book. I moved aside a loose board (our house is somewhat flimsy in places) and Mikki loudly demanded entrance into what she knew was a warm place. I let her in ... and she stayed. We kept her in the bathroom for the first couple of weeks and then let her mix with the other cats. There have been the inevitable personality clashes between them (and me) but she's finally coming to accept her place and mellowing out.
We were unable to treat problems she was having outdoors regarding fleas & chiggers so her skin was a mess, but indoors we were able to target these problems with a vengeance. Her fur, which had been abysmally short on her hindquarters, is growing in nicely and her rough & scabby skin is healing at a rapid pace. Once very stand-offish and refusing to be touched any more than a little bit, she now walks up on the sofa behind me and demands that I hold her on my chest and pet her to the exclusion of all other activities. She purrs like a motorboat and closes her eyes in absolute contentment.
Mikki, the once extremely feral "don't touch me" cat, is now a domesticated housecat. Mostly.

Bio: Another winter spent indoors and Mikki is now officially an indoor cat. She likes to go outdoors on nice days and refuses to accept "no" for an answer, and has learned to come to the window next to my desk and very quietly meow when she wants to come back in. Combat with the other cats is usually limited to a bit of screeching and mostly claw-less batting, she's learned that if she keeps it up past being hollered at one time she gets put out no matter what the weather is. It only took one or two times of being tossed out in the cold for her to get the idea that indoor living came with a price tag of civility, and she mellowed considerably.
Most of the cats see me as the "Alpha" cat, and Mikki has pretty much adopted me as her person. Though she is mostly a one-person sort of cat she is slowly warming up to Lisa (who is a wonderful person and treats all our cats like a loving mom). She still likes to crawl into my lap while I'm on the computer (she's sleeping at the moment) and often sleeps on (and sometimes in) the bed with us which is helping her get closer to Lisa and accept her more as the "Mama" of the house. She has puffed up into a regular butterbean and her fur is very thick though quite short, and she gets a little more mellow every day.
