Brown Tabby

Eating, sleeping, and cuddling.

Not being as graceful or as agile as his sister.

Favorite Toy:
His feather wand.

Favorite Nap Spot:
Any flat surface is liable to be scoped out as a potential place to lay his head.

Favorite Food:
He will eat anything, but his favorite treat is roast turkey.

Melting my heart.

Arrival Story:
Tanner, like my other kitty, Olivia, was born feral. His mother and Olivia's mother were sisters, so in addition to being adoptive brother & sister, they are also cousins! Tanner's mother is a feral cat who lived near my office. I had tried to trap her numerous times, the most recent being the previous year when she had had another litter of kittens. I trapped the two kittens and found homes for them, but Mama refused to be caught. Then, three years ago, she had another litter of four kittens (two calicos, a brown tiger with white, and Tanner, a solid brown mackerel tabby). Unfortunately, Tanner was the only survivor of his litter. Despite Hav-A-Heart traps set out, two kittens completely disappeared, and another, one of the calicos, sadly met her death under the wheels of a passing car. Tanner, however, was rescued, and so was his mother, who was adopted by a relative of one of the techs at my vet's office. Tanner was not supposed to be a keeper ... I had every intention of finding a home for him. But once I'd had him for about 24 hours, that plan was out the window. He was so precious, and incredibly, almost unbelievably sweet, and he had these wide, trusting, gentle green-gold eyes that just melted me. Plus, he had a biological tie to my sweet Olivia. So that was that ... I decided I couldn't let him go, even when a friend, who I'd enlisted into helping me find a home for him, called to say she'd found the perfect one. I had to tell her no - he was staying.

Good morning, Catster friends! It's been a long time! I regret that I have neglected my blogging for some time now,(very busy, you know!) but clearly I need to get back in the game, since my little brother, Finn, was recently honored as one of the select diaries of the day, and he was only four months old. Therefore, I must step up my efforts so as not to be outdone by this skinny little interloper. (I really do like Finn, though, and we run and play all throughout the house. He's much more fun than Olivia - all SHE ever wants to do is groom herself!!!!!! That Narcissus guy had nothing on her!)

Anyway, I thought I would write today to share my excitement over something that happened last night. Mom was on the computer and I happened to take a break from playing to see that she was ordering us some more nummy food from Hare Today! As of last fall, we are 100% raw fed kitties (though now that Finn is here, and is eating canned food, Olivia & I have been sneaking a taste here and there) and Hare Today is one of the places Mom goes online to hunt for food for us. Sometimes she gets in the car and goes to hunt, too, and comes back with lots of plastic bags full of stuff for us, all wrapped up in these nifty styrofoam trays. I wonder how she works that out - because that is not the way I've seen it done on the Discovery channel? But anyway, Mom is quite a good hunter if I do say so, and keeps us well supplied with all sorts of delicious raw meat (plus edible bone and organ, to keep it all balanced) that we love and which keeps us very healthy.

Anyway, here's just some of what Mom ordered for us:

1 lb. of ground pheasant with bones & organs

1 lb. of boneless ground duck breast

1 lb. of boneless ground rabbit

1 lb. of boneless ground turkey thighs

1 lb. of boneless ground lamb

pinkie rabbits and week old quail (now THESE I'm not sure about!)

5 lb. of green beef tripe strips with spleen

1 lb. of duck hearts (lots of taurine in heart, which is important for us felines)

1 lb. of ground mutton with bones and organs

3 lb. of beef gullet

whole dressed quail (my dog brother and sister had these last time and said they were good ... we get to try them this time ... so I'll reserve judgement till then)

5 lb. of ground goat with tripe, bones and organs

quail feet (for some edible bone content - we've never had these before either ... hmm)

So ... quite a haul, I'd say. Mom is an excellent hunter, and I can't wait for the box to come. And if any of you cats think you might want to eat a raw diet, too, come on over to the raw forum here on Catster, or send your humans over. The other hunter humans there will help them out, and then you, too, can be a kitchen tiger!

Purrs until next time!

Too Fat? I don't THINK so!

So the other day, I was cuddling with Mom and she told me that she thought I felt a little bit chunky. Now, I've always been a big kitty, even when I was a baby, and now that I am full-grown, I weigh thirteen and a half pounds. There are definitely kitties bigger than me, I'm sure, but of all the kitties I personally know, I am the biggest one. However, I am definitely NOT fat, I don't think. The Dr. has always told Mom that I am just a big cat and that I have excellent muscle tone and would not be considered overweight. But Mom said she thought that she had to press down just the slightest bit in order to feel my ribs, and that means I might need to lose some weight. She is going to talk to the Dr. about it when I go for my checkup, but meanwhile, she said, I need to get more exercise.

One of the ways she plans to help me get more excercise is to make sure that Olivia & I get outside on our harnesses and leashes five times a week instead of only once or twice. I think that sounds ok, because I really like to stroll around the backyard and investigate things. And the fence is really high so I feel secure back there.

Plus, Mom said that she is going to make sure that we also have at least two play sessions per day with my feather wand. I think that is definitely ok, since the feather wand is my favorite toy.

Now, if she tries to cut back my meals ... THEN I'm gonna be mad!

Home Alone ...

Just call me Kevin McAlley-Catster. (Although to be entirely truthful, I am not completely alone ... my big sister, Olivia, is here with me, and Mom has someone keeping an eye on us. )

Still, being alone in the house without Mom or the canines does present a curious kitten with some unique opportunities.

For example, I have the next forty-eight hours to learn how to open the refrigerator door and work the remote control. Plus, I can torture Olivia without Mom scolding me or Tucker, my bossy canine older brother, around to rat me out.

So much to do ... so little time. And of course, I must work some time into my schedule for a few cat naps.

Hopefully I won't have to defend the premises against the Catnip Bandits ...
