Skye's Transition to a Raw Diet for IBD

Update on Raw Diet Tweaking

It's been about a month and a half and Skye is now on a totally raw diet

After about a week on Prize Choice she became very constipated and started vomiting hairballs and we were concerned that the bones were causing this so I switched to raw chicken breast meat and after a few days slowly introduced raw boneless rabbit meat

2 weeks or so ago I began making Skyes food up in my food processor, and added raw egg yolk and filtered water - this was much easier and less time consuming than cutting the meat into small pieces for Skye to be able to manage with no teeth

Then after a few days things went a bit crazy - Skye started soiling outside her litter tray and her stools had become dangerously soft - so I sought advise from a few sources and was recommended to stop the rabbit and raw egg and to introduce raw chicken liver along with some supplements.

I have struggled to find anywhere in the Uk that sells supplements like Instincts or Primal and found the international shipping to be very expensive so went out and bought various vitamins to add individually - Taurine, Vit E, Vit B, Salmon Oil, Calcium and then luckily managed to find www.knowwhatyoufeed.com where I have purchased Alnutrin with calcium and their shipping from the USA was very reasonable along with payment thru Paypal - I will continue with raw Chicken Breast Meat, Raw Chicken Liver, and individual supplements all mixed and mushed in my food processor with filtered water until the Alnutrin arrives

Skye's stools have returned back to how I prefer them, much harder, less frequent, less stinky which makes for a happy cat and happy owner

Day Nineteen

A strange thing happened.. I started feeding 1/4 regular food to 3/4 raw and noticed that Skye was leaving the regular and just eating raw!!
So I totally stopped the regular food and she's been fine, apart from slight constipation that last a day, until I gave her some Tuna - I guessed a abrupt change of food may get her system moving again, and it did - but no runny stools, she just returned to normal, small stools!

So now Skye is on a totally raw diet - and I've been experimenting and gave her some tuna again today to see what happens.

We had a disasterous day - the rabbit that I had defrosted turned out to be crappy ribs and no meat so I was stuck for the days raw meat - I ended up buying some chicken from Tesco and using that for a day - and in the meantime went to a local pet food shop and bought Prize Choice frozen pack of minced rabbit and chicken.

Skye's stools were amazing yesterday - so small and hard and hardly smelly!!

The change from pure rabbit to Prize Choice cause a slight softening but nothing like her old runny stools

Things are still going extremelly well with Skye's transition onto a raw diet

I have definately noticed a difference in Skye's litter tray already - her stools are much smaller and more solid - the frequency of her stools have reduced to one or two per day, and I even believe the smell has reduced too!

AsI have been increasing the ratio of raw rabbit to Skye's regular food I have started to weigh the raw rabbit per meal and am currently giving 30g of raw rabbit mixed with just over 30g of regular food.
Skye was originally eating 50g of Royal Canin Sensitivity Control Chicken and Rice - which is 1/2 a pouch.

The plan is to increase the raw rabbit by 5 g every 2 to 3 days and decrease the regular food until she is on completely raw rabbit - then we will look into adding the various supplements to give Skye the other nitrients that she needs. Rabbit already has a lot of the nutrients she needs, compared to other meats so this is good.

Once Skye is established on a raw rabbit diet will consider trying other raw meats like poultry and game meats, which she would most likely eat if in the wild

Everything is going really well - Skye is tolerating the transition to raw diet really well and I have been able to slowly increase the amount of raw rabbit that I add to her food

So far during the past four days I have given prokolin once after Skye had a runny stool - which I suspect was from eating something she shouldn't have from our kitchen - she is very mischeivious and often will sneak into the kitchen when hungry and steal scraps if we have left dinner plates out!

Day Three

Today I gave just over a teaspoon of raw rabbit chopped really small with 50g of regular food - so far she has had 3 of her 4 meals today and there's still no vomitting and her stools are still good but smelly - I know stools aren't meant to smell nice anyway but believe me her's smell like nothing I've ever smelled!

I think Skye likes the raw rabbit - she certainly wolfs her meals down and doesn't eat round or avoid the raw meat mixed in her regular food - and she's definately happier in herself, although I suspect that might be due to the absence of me giving her stomach ulcer med and hour before each feed - as she vomitted the first time I mixed her new stomach ulcer meds with her food I decided not to give anymore so that if she vomitted again I would be able to know what was causing it.

I wonder if it can be doing good this soon, with such small quantity?

Day Two

I increased the raw rabbit to just under a teaspoon's worth for 50g of her regular food 4 times a day - everything is still good - I even think it may be doing her some good - her stools do seem slightly more solid but still smell the same

The raw rabbit meat looks and feels just like chicken - I thought I might be slightly squeamish but it hasn't been an issue - I'm even ok to think about fluffy bunnies as I chop!!!

Day One - 2nd Meal

Skye is fed 4 times a day - about 50g of Royal Canin Sensitivity Control Chicken and Rice - as she can't cope with any more and will vomit it back

2nd meal (or 3rd of the day - breakfast was just R/C S/C) - I repeated as the 1st with same raw rabbit to her regular food

She's had a nap and come downstairs for love and cuddles - did a litter tray check, and all is ok so far again!!

Day One - 1st meal

I went and bought a rabbit from my local butchers today - frozen and it had been gutted and skinned etc.. he was kind enough to chop it up quite small so I can defrost small chunks as I need them

Back home I defrosted a small chunk of rabbit in the refrigerator and later today I was able to cut a very small bit about 1/2 teaspoon worth of meat from the defrosting chunk, which I chopped into tiny 1/4 bite sized pieces and mixed it into 40g of her Royal Canin Sensitivity Control Chicken & Rice wet Food

Skye ate her meal as usual, and didn't appear to notice/reject the tiny bit of raw rabbit in her meal

it has been 30 minutes since her meal, and Skye has not vomitted so that's a good start!!!!
