My friend Ishtar had a really cool tag in her diary today, in honor of World Cat Day, which is August 8th. This tag is for your people, so you have to let them take over your diary for a bit, but it is fun.
I would like to invite all kitties who would like to play to participate.
Love, Siggy

Okay, Mom it's your turn now:

WORLD CAT DAY-questionnaire

1. you know some people call us moody, stubborn, capricious or not willing to learn. what is your opinion about such cat prejudices?

I say that you are less stubborn than me, less moody than your dad, and if you are capricious, I welcome it, because you keep me on my toes. You are certainly willing to learn, and in fact have learned very well where the warmest spots in the house are, what the sound of a can opener means, and so much more. You are complex and fascinating and I adore you all the more for it.

2. tell me: how do you remember our first day together in our home?

On our very first night together (You were adopted on a Thursday night in downtown San Francisco.), we rode in a taxi together to my apartment. When we arrived, I brought you in your SPCA pet carrier, and placed you in the bathroom with food, water, and a makeshift litter box. You quickly made it clear that the space was too small for you, and so I placed you in my bedroom. You explored everything, but wanted to stay close to me. You seemed to feel at home. That night, I awoke to find you snuggled up next to me, on the pillow right by my head, a place you still occupy today. I loved having you there. The next day, I had to go to work and I was very nervous to leave you by yourself all day long, your first full day. My boss let me leave early that day, and gave me a ride home. I was nervous about what I would find when I came in. What I found was adorable you, curled up in a ball in a pile of laundry. You looked up at me as if to say "Hi, Mom." At that moment I knew for sure that you and I were going to be very good together.

3. you have taught me so much – but what did you learn from me?

I have learned so much from you. Before I met your dad and got married, I learned that if a guy didn't like you, he was the wrong guy for me. I have learned that the best medicine for a tough day is a snuggle with you. I have learned through my early struggles with your health, that I am willing to sacrifice a lot to keep you happy and healthy. I have learned that there are a lot of beautiful, amazing places in the world, but sometimes the best place of all is at home with the ones you love. I have learned that sometimes you should just go after something you want with reckless abandon. I have learned that it is very important to keep your nails trimmed, for my own personal safety.

4. have you ever wished – even for a second – that i was someone else?

Absolutely not! Not even when you are biting my ankles, and I call you a little monster. You are MY little monster!

5. what if we'd change bodies for a day?

I am sure I would enjoy the experience more than you, as I would get to snuggle up in a tiny ball in your heated cat bed, and see what all the fuss is about. Although I suspect that you would not have too many complaints about the new menu options that would open up to you.

6. could you name those of my habits you would not want to miss?

Oh my darling boy, I can't imagine sitting down and not having you look up at me with those precious eyes, and stretching toward me asking to be picked up. It always reminds me of a child reaching for his mom to pick him up. It is so endearing that my heart melts every time. I love it so when I fall asleep on the couch and wake up to find you laying on my chest. You always want to be as close to me as you can. Though I complain when you march across the keyboard when I am working on the computer, I can't imagine not having you there, and at night, when we all go to bed, and you settle in next to me on the pillow, biting my hair if I am not facing you, I may grumble and groan but those little head bites are precious to me. You are precious to me, and there is nothing about you that I wouldn't miss. Just the thought is enough to bring me to tears.

7. let's imagine we could go back in time – how would you estimate the probability that you would adopt me again?

100%. There is no question that I would adopt you a million times more. You see, when I went to adopt a cat, I had another in mind, she was a female calico. I used to remember her name, but I've forgotten it now, and it doesn't even matter, because she is not you. I went three times to visit her at the Anthropologie store where the San Francisco SPCA had their holiday pet adoption campaign. The third time I came, I was told that she had been adopted that day. The volunteer told me there was another cat that she wanted me to see. She said she had a feeling about the two of us. I watched you, as you ate with gusto the food they had put out for you. I spent an hour observing you, and holding you. I asked the workers if they could hold you for me until the following night. I had to work the next day, and didn't want to bring you home only to leave you by yourself the following day when I went to work, plus I wasn't prepared to bring a cat home that night. I had no supplies, and it all felt very spur of the moment. Then I saw a couple looking at you, and commenting on how beautiful you were. They noticed me hanging around your cage like a mother guarding her cubs. They asked me if I was adopting you, I answered immediately "Yes!", and so I did. The next night I went back to Anthropologie to tell the SPCA workers how happy I was to have you, and how you were the perfect fit. They told me that the original cat I had in mind had been returned to them that day. She wasn't working out in her new home. I knew at that moment that everything had come together the way it had so that we would find each other. Sometimes life gives us exactly what we need.

8. just one last question: which big cats do you like best?

Is thia a trick question? You are a pretty big cat you know. No...well then, I love all big cats. Tigers, panthers, they are all stunning. I remember the first white tiger I saw. It was on a trip with my mom to San Francisco (I was living in San Diego, where I grew up.) We went to the San Francisco Zoo, and there was a gorgeous white tiger named Prince Charles. I came face to face with him through the glass of the exhibit, and he was magnificent. I must say though that as a Leo, I am very partial to lions. With your coloring, you have always reminded me of a lion. You are my little lion cub.

Thanks, Pretty Princess! I loved reading yours too!
Sweets, I totally agree! My Mom was so excited to do this. She felt like it was a great way to share with the world how special I am to her, and a beautiful thing to have many years from now when I am no longer here ! It's like a tribute to us, while we are alive. I hope tons of cats and their people join in!
Sassy, thank you! Mommy was crying the whole time she wrote it.

i can only agree in "Sometimes life gives us exactly what we need." in this context! you found a lovely mom who fully deserves you! and isn't it astounding that both our humans chased away other people during the decision process?

THANK YOU so much for convincing your mommy to play!
big hug - ishtar
