Arrival Story:
I came across Kammie at a kill shelter in Indiana in 1994. She was sitting quietly in her cage. We looked at all the kittens and then the cats. Something about Kammie told me she was the one. I asked to see her and she let out a cry as I held her in my arms. I looked down and noticed a large wound on her leg. I brought it up to the attendant and they took her away from me. I asked if I could see her again and they said she was being attended to. I must have waited an hour before impatiently telling them that I WANT to adopt the gray and white cat that you brought in the back. They reluctantly let me adopt her. I never adopted an animal without consulting my hubby but my heart told me to take her and take her now. So off to the vet we went and it turned out she had been bitten by a male cat. The vet asked where we got her and I told him we adopted her from the shelter. In disbelief he said I am surprised they let you take her, they always put wounded cats to sleep. It was at that moment I realized why they hadn't brought her back out to me. I felt a great connection with Kammie and was so glad I was there at the right time. The vet started Kammie on antibiotics and told me the worst was yet to come. It was going to get a lot worse before it got better. He was right because she got a systemic blood infection and was hospitalized for three days shortly after coming home. In total she was on antibiotics for three months. Once it was over though, she was perfect! She moved to Minnesota with us in 1995.

Bio:
In January of 2004 Kammie started to act a little out of sorts. We took her to the vet several times and every time they couldn't figure out what was wrong with her. Blood work would come back OK and there was no real clue to what was going on. During this time she wasn't as active and she started to lay under the curio cabinet instead of on the back of the couch like she loved. She couldn't hold down any food and had to have all her meals puree'd because food caused her gag reflexes to throw up all her meals and her overall behavior was just different. In August her brother all of a sudden stopped eating and when he went to the vet, he was in full blown kidney failure. He passed away later that month. Emmett then joined the family to help ease the pain of our loss. That was just the beginning though because Kammie ended up back at the vets several times in September and October. In October though her final symptom finally diagnosed what was really happening. Kammie started circling and her pupils were unequal. There was neurological damage going on. She went to the University of Minnesota where she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Surgery wasn't an option for us because the vet was sure the tumor would be back in a short amount of time. We couldn't have her go through it all over again so we started her on prednisone. It worked great for a very short time and then she just got worse and stopped eating. On November 30th 2004, exactly three months after losing Simba, Kammie went to the Rainbow bridge. She was really an amazing and affectionate cat. We took her ashes with us when we moved in 2005 and buried them at our new house with a beautiful Ash Tree.

Yesterday was 6 years since Kammie crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge and we still miss her dearly. I was very blessed the day I walked into the shelter and saw her there waiting. Things were a bit touch and go in the beginning but once she recovered we spent many wonderful years together. She reminds me a lot of Tara, a trooper and a fighter until the very end.

Love you Kammie and miss you. You were a very special cat and hold a wonderful place in my heart.

Almost 5 years

In just a couple weeks it will be 5 years since you left us Kammie. You were so incredibly strong and brave in your final weeks, even though I suspect you felt miserable. The family would like to thank you for all you for all the wonderful years you were with us and all the love you gave us. You were very loved and a very special girl. Even from the rocky touch and go start, you put your trust in us. Once you were finally well it was wonderful to see your bonding. I think one of my fondest moments were the times you were hiding behind the couch and when Tara walked by, you would pounce out and bat at her. Tara would run away in a playful way and run back to do it again. You both played like that often and it was a pleasure to watch. You are both at the Rainbow Bridge now and I hope you are once again playing like you did when you were young. I love you Kammie and your memorial tree is looking awesome! It has grown so much and is doing so well. I suspect you already know that though. Sending you love.

Happy New Year!! Yesterday my brother Emmett was Catster's Diary of the day! It was big news but it made mom feel sad that she never created a memorial page for me. So as Emmett was in the spotlight, mom started pulling out all the floppy discs and pulling off photos for my page. I must say I am very pleased with my pretty page and all the kitty requests to be pals. I am also very missed by my family, who can hardly believe that in November I will have been gone for 5 years. I did meet my brother Emmett but I didn't really know him. It was just about the time he arrived that I started to get really ill. I am grateful though that the family had Emmett to keep them company. He was meant to help the family mourn the loss of Simba but it turned out his role became even more important.

Happy New Year Catster

Love,
Kammie

Poem For Cats

And God asked the feline spirit
Are you ready to come home?
Oh, yes, quite so, replied the precious soul
And, as a cat, you know I am most able
To decide anything for myself.

Are you coming then? asked God.
Soon, replied the whiskered angel
But I must come slowly
For my human friends are troubled
For you see, they need me, quite certainly.

But don't they understand? asked God
That you'll never leave them?
That your souls are intertwined. For all eternity?
That nothing is created or destroyed?
It just is....forever and ever and ever.

Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am....forever and ever and ever.
