Arrival Story:
My secretary's kids befriended this little kitten but couldn't have her living with them because their father is allergic. They found a neighbor teenager who said he'd like to adopt her. Several days later, the kitten came back to their house, hid under the couch and would not come out. Another neighbor reported that she'd seen the teenager beating the kitten. Eventually, they got the kitten into the bathroom. She got into the bathtub but would not eat or drink anything. They had no money to take her to the vet. After two days of this, I asked them to bring her to me. Her breathing was so labored, I left work early to take her to the vet. I thought she had a pneumonia but X-rays showed she had a diaphragmatic hernia, probably caused by a kick in the belly. She was already hypothermic and three quarters dead when she arrived at the animal hospital. She spent the night in an oxygen cage, getting warmed up and rehydrated. The next day she went for surgery. She weighed only two lbs. We knew there was a good chance she would not survive the surgery, but there was a 100% chance she would die without it. The vet said her whole chest wall was torn away from the ribs by the kick she had received. She had a huge tear in her diaphragm. Her whole liver was in her chest; it collapsed her right lung and was pushing on her left lung and her heart. She did survive and went home in just a few days. She was back at the vet's in short order, though, because she had developed a nasty URI and wasn't eating enough. She was so congested she was blowing bubbles out her nose! I wouldn't want to eat, either, if that was happening to me. The vet gave her an antibiotic ointment for her eyes and Tobramycin eyedrops to put down her nose and that cleared her right up and her appetite came back. I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't have the photos to prove it, but just two weeks after her surgery, with an incision from the top of her breastbone to halfway down her belly, she was wrestling with her younger but bigger new sister, Little Bit. I fell in love with Bassie right away and knew I wanted her to stay with us. She was such a brave little kitty. Also, Little Bit was a kitten then and I thought it would be great for her to have a play-mate while we were away at work. They hissed at each other for five minutes but have been great friends ever since. My husband needed a little convincing. He thought I'd be giving Bassie back to my secretary. Bassie apparently understood who needed to be brought around and she undertook a campaign of parking herself on my husband's shoulder the minute he came home and staying there until it was time for bed. The rest is history... Bassie was understandably wary of strangers for a long time and always disappeared into the garage whenever we had visitors. She is curious, however, and would come out eventually to surreptitiously check out the newcomers. If they behaved themselves, she would come closer and brush against them with her bushy tail, maybe even push against their hand with her head. Recently, she's decided humans aren't all that bad (at least the ones we let come over) and has become much bolder.
