My Gotcha Day Anniversary

November 20th 2011 8:41 am
[ Leave A Comment | 3 people already have ]

Just three years ago, my Meowmy saved me from a kill shelter. I was set to die because I was very old and blind. Meowmy learned about me from a wonderful place called Blind Cat Rescue of North Carolina. I was supposed to go there to live, but I stole Meowmy's heart, then Purrdaddy's too, so I suddenly had a forever home!

In the almost-year I had with my pawrents, I was loved so much. I had chronic renal failure, and Meowmy learned to give sub-Q fluids. Every day we cuddled and talked while I got 'stuck'. I hated it at first, but eventually I wasn't so frightened and realized somehow it must help me 'cause I felt much better afterwards.

I was quite a teacher! From me, Meowmy learned that blind cats are just like other kitties and need loving homes, too. Won't you stop by their website at www.blindcatrescue.com and meet the blind kitties there? It's an amazing place with many remarkable cats - cats just like me.

Blind Cats CAN See a Future!

My Meowmy asked me to sprinkle some magic angel dust from the Bridge today for a very special cause!

I was once a blind cat! But now at the Bridge, I can see everything! Isn't that wonderful?

I have two Earth brofurs who are blind and one sisfur who is visually impaired. Here at the Bridge, I have LOTS of furriends who were blind while they were on Earth.

Did you know that even 'no-kill' shelters sometimes euthanize blind cats because they are considered 'unadoptable'?
Did you realize that a blind, black blind cat - like our Bones and Charcoal - stands virtually no hope of adoption?
That cats can become blind due to birth defects, trauma, untreated disease, and yes, even human cruelty?

BUT...
Did you also know that blind cats love to climb??
That we love to play with cat toys??
That we run and jump and enjoy life JUST LIKE OTHER CATS?

AND...
Did you know that there's a very special place for blind cats? A place where they are treated with love, respect, and care? It's TRUE!

This heaven-on-earth for blind cats is Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary of North Carolina, featured in the June, 2010 issue of Cat Fancy. www.blindcatrescue.com
BCR is the dream and life's work of a very special woman, and the Sanctuary depends on the sponsorships of the cats and donations from caring people around the world.

But YOU can help BCR today and everyday in the Shelter Challenge at The Animal Rescue Site! It's FREE and EASY and it can truly make a difference.
http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/clickToGive/home.faces? siteId=3

Our Stevie, Bones, and Charcoal are some of the lucky ones. They found a loving, caring home, thanks to messages sent to my Meowmy from BCR! I was Meowmy's first blind cat, also sent through BCR. Without BCR, I would have been euthanized!! Imagine!! We found homes, but 0ther kitties need the resources only a Rescue can provide.

Won't you help by voting today and every day during the contest for Blind Cat Rescue of NC? (Don't forget to confirm your vote by identifying the animal photo shown after you vote!)

All the blind kitties will purr in gratitude!!

A Step Forward for Eve!!

So many of you have supported Meowmy, Mama Terry and their friends' quest to find Justice for Eve, the sweet kitten who died shortly after being adopted from Okefenokee Humane Society in Waycross, GA. You can read all about Eve on her Catster page:
http://www.catster.com/cats/1086369

I asked Meowmy to update you on a positive development!! A man from the GA Department of Agriculture answered Meowmy's (third) email to that office! He asked for Eve's medical records, saying they were necessary for an inquiry to proceed. Of course, Meowmy sent them right away. So it looks like someone has noticed us!! PURRRRRR!!!

This may take time. (Has the government ever moved quickly??) We promise to keep you updated when we have news.

For all who care about Eve, please take a moment and sign her petition, if you haven't already. It's never to late to take a stand for all the animals still at Okefenokee HS. Thank you for caring so much!!!!

Wishing Upon a Star for Eve & FLOCK Justice

It snowed today on earth but Meowmy says there are a few stars peeking through the clouds. And there are LOTS of stars at the Bridge! She whispered to me at the Bridge that if I make a wish, it might come true. I'm going to make TWO wishes! And YOU can help them come true!!!

Wish #1:
Many of you have read the heartbreaking story of my sisfur Eve. I never got to meet Eve, due to the neglect she suffered at Okefenokee Humane Society in Waycross, GA (Ware Co.) Meowmy and Eve's to-be adoptive Mommy Terry, along with their friends, are asking everyone to write snail mails or emails to the folks on the list below. Be polite but ask for an investigation into the conditions at OHS. So far, we have had only one noncommittal reply. You can read my back diary entries for that actual letter. If enough of us write and express our concern for the animals still there, surely someone will listen to us. Please help us bring Justice for Eve!!

Wish #2:

Starlight, star bright, first star I see tonight...I wish I may...I wish I might...find justice for my friend Muppet and the FLOCK cats.
http://www.catster.com/cats/624959 - Muppet's page

Muppet is my furriend, and she's a survivor just like me! She was at a huge cat 'rescue' called FLOCK. These cats were left to starve and several hundred did not make it. Muppet was critical but she was so strong and fought so hard to live! And she did! Best Friends Rescue took over and thanks to hard workers like Muppet's wonderful furever mommy and others, the surviving cats had a chance for happy, healthy lives.

Unfortunately, the case against the bad people who ran FLOCK was DISMISSED!!!! I'm going to quote now from Muppet's diary:

"...And on this note, and the main reason for my diary entry, we are asking all of our Catster friends to please write a letter to our District Attorney, Bob Beckett, letting him know how outraged every animal lover is that his office failed to properly see that there was justice for Flock. Although he has filed an appeal, we want Bob Beckett to know just how many eyes are upon him and how he better not let his office mess it up this time! Meomy was told that this case was ‘purposely hidden so the outcome would be a dismissal.’ And in today’s paper it states, “Beckett’s notice of appeal was filed yesterday. Gibson (General Council for FLOCK) said that surprised him because he and Beckett had struck a deal that the case would go no further.” Struck a deal? Humph!!

If everyone who cares about this case could please write a 'snail mail' letter to Bob Beckett, it could really help this case a lot. We need a flood of mail to come in. And thank you to everyone who already have sent letters! *grateful hugs*"

District Attorney, Nye County

I'm just one cat angel, but I speak for so many when I beg you to write to DA Beckett and to those with authority over Okefenokee Humane Society. Sadly, neglect and abuse of helpless animals happens every day. Usually there isn't much we can do. Here is the chance for caring, truly HUMANE people like my Meowmy and Muppet's Mommy to join your voices together and take action! Write DA Beckett, please. Write or email those in Ware County who can help the poor animals still at OHS.

You CAN make a real difference! They may ignore a few of us, but they cannot ignore us ALL.

Bless you for caring! Thank you so very much, HQ, for giving us the opportunity to inform Catsters and Dogsters about these heartbreaking cases. We love Catster!!!

We finally got the emails of the board members of the Okefenokee Humane Society!! These are the people who have control over the animals, like Eve, waiting there for forever homes. I'm also posting the county commissioners emails as they control funding for OHS.

Please!! Take a moment and email them, asking for an investigation of the circumstances surrounding Eve's malnutrition, spaying and death. Be polite but firm. Let them know we are also writing the state agriculture department. Eve's death should matter, and we are the ones who can see that it has meaning and importance. Bless you!!!!

Eve Update

All the Bridge Angels were celebrating today because the Cat's Meow featured our darling Angel Eve!!! Her story has touched the hearts of caring people around the world. Quite an accomplishment for one little kitten!

Meowmy wanted me to post an update. She and Mommy Terry, along with friends and supporters of Eve's, have written to the government officials mentioned below. As of today, they have received a total of 0 responses. It seems Eve's mommies and their furriends are being ignored by those in a position to help improve the situation at Okefenokee Humane Society.

In Eve's memory, all the Bridge Angels are asking any of you who can to contact these people, asking for an inquiry into Eve's case and conditions at OHS. If enough voices are raised, perhaps we will be heard. We'll be sprinkling angel dust for luck!!!

Sweet Angel Eve

January 12th 2010 12:42 pm

Now that I'm a Bridge Angel, I can see once again! One of my favorite pasttimes is keeping watch over my Earth family and furriends. Sometimes this is a happy thing to do. Other times, it breaks my heart.

Since it was the holidays, Angel Darcy - my Earth sisfur - and I were watching Meowmy and Purrdaddy a lot. We were so excited when we saw that Meowmy was going to adopt little Eve, a partially blind kitten, from Okefenokee Humane Society in Waycross, GA and help in her transport to wonderful mommy Terry way up in MN! Meowmy would pick up Eve on her way to Jekyll Island where she and Purrdaddy like to spend New Year's. What a wonderful New Year's this would be!!

Many of you may have already read about Eve's difficult fight for life. You can visit her diary on Catster and read all about it at: http://www.catster.com/cats/1086369/diary/I_believe

Eve fought so very hard to survive, and Meowmy and Purrdaddy tried their best to help her fight. Three vets were stunned at how underweight she was, caused by malnutrition at the 'humane' society where she lived almost her entire life. Meowmy fed Eve using a syringe, carefully mixing quality kitten canned food with a milk supplement for kittens, and a gel with lots of vitamins and protein. Eve didn't like her feedings much, but I think she understood why Meowmy was doing this. Meowmy prayed every day - many times each day - for the knowledge, strength, and love to help Eve survive. I organized all the Bridge Angels, and we had purring sessions for Eve that lasted all day and night. Purrdaddy and Meowmy tried to help Eve walk and massaged her little legs every hour.

On Friday, Jan. 1, Eve seemed stronger. It was warm on Jekyll Island, so Meowmy took Eve outside. Even though she could not walk, Meowmy let her sit in the grass. Eve loved grass! She hadn't seen grass, having lived almost her entire life at the 'humane' society. She nibbled on grass, and she loved watching the squirrels playing overhead in the live oak trees. Meowmy bundled her in a warm crocheted afghan and carried her on walks through the live oaks. Once, she took Evie close to a tree, and Eve reached out her tiny paw to touch its rough bark. Dear little Eve did get to experience the outside world, if only for a short time.

On Jan. 2, our little girl began having breathing difficulties, so Meowmy and Purrdaddy rushed her to a vet who would see them after hours. This kind vet at Cheek to Cheek Animal Hospital in Brunswick, GA - his name is Dr. Cheek! - was wonderful with Eve. He talked gently to her as he worked for nearly two hours to figure out what was going on and how to help her. Since Meowmy had given me sub-Q fluids, he gave her fluids to take back to the condo and some antibiotics. He made x-rays which showed that Eve's little bones were normal. Dr. Cheek showed Meowmy areas where Eve was so thin - there was no flesh, just skin and bones. He agreed with the first Brunswick vet that Eve should never have been cleared for adoption, and that she was too malnourished to have been spayed the day before Meowmy adopted her.

As they were leaving Dr. Cheek, Eve began really struggling to breathe. Meowmy and Daddy drove as quickly as possible to Savannah where they could give her oxygen and try to help her breathing. These people were also so kind and cared so much about Eve. Tired, and emotionally exhausted, Meowmy and Purrdaddy got back home to Jekyll about 3:30 am, praying that Eve would get better over night.

It was not to be. The clinic called Sunday morning, Jan. 3, and said Eve continued to get worse. Meowmy and Purrdaddy decided to let Evie join us at the Bridge, and Mommy Terry agreed.

I welcomed Eve, along with so many other furriends here, soon after. She is happy and healthy now, enjoying her new wings and her restored sight.

Eve should not have died. Had she been properly fed, even with underlying problems, she could have been adopted and cared for by Mommy Terry. Please take a moment to sign a petition calling for an inspection and investigation of the Okefenokee 'Humane' Society.

Other cats and dogs are still there, possibly suffering as Eve did. They need your help. Just visit this link:
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/166/justice-for-eve

Eve made so many people around the world beliEVE! She inspired us with her fight to live and continues to inspire us to fight for justice for her and the other helpless animals at this 'inhumane' society. We invite you to join our efforts and show Eve that the world can indeed be a good place.

Eve sends her love to each and every one of you!

GOOD MEWS!!!

I'm coming home!!!! The call just came from the vet's office and my CRF number was cut in HALF with the doubled fluids! Meowmy can pick me up after work today and take me home!!!! I'm SOOOOO happy!! (Even though now I must take fluids 4x a week instead of 2x...) Our vet was so happy and so amazed. I was very, very weak and the chances of my coming home seemed so very remote on Tuesday.

We don't know how long I'll stay stable but at least I will have some more time with my family. It's a true miracle - the POTP! I think it's my second miracle. The first was when Alana of Blind Cat Rescue of NC asked Meowmy to save me from the Fulton Co. shelter. I've been with them 11 months now, and after the trauma I'd been through, that was a miracle. And now I get to come home again!!!!!!!

Please keep purring that I stay stable for a long, long time!!!!!!

Meowmy thanks each and every furbaby who sent me their purrs and purrayers and gifts for my page. She wants to write each one but just has been too worried for me to do much else but purray and lead my brofurs and sisfurs in purring. Every note and gift has been so appreciated and we know contributed to this miracle. Bless you!

Happy Purrs and lots of Love,
Scarlett

Sad News...Please Purr!

Scarlett's Meowmy here to give an update on sweet Scarlett's condition:

Over the weekend, Scarlett took a turn for the worse. She stopped eating and seemed weak and lethargic. The vet counseled us by phone to increase her sub-Q fluids, which we did, and we took her back to the vet today.

Her blood work numbers are not good and she's anemic. She has Chronic Renal Failure and is an old kitty, and of course, blind. Our sweet vet isn't ready to give up, though. As much as I hated to, I agreed to leave her there to receive extra fluids and meds for her anemia. On Friday, we'll do more blood work. If she's improved, we'll bring her home and go to a new regime of more sub-Q fluids.

If not, then we will help our dear one journey to the Rainbow Bridge. She has had such a difficult life, but we take comfort in knowing that her last 11 months have been filled with love and that she has been safe and happy. It breaks my heart to think of letting go, but we have always known we would not have Scarlett with us long. I hope we'll have a few more months, but it's not in my hands.

Please purr and purray for this brave, gentle, loving cat. She's been such an inspiration to us all...
