Arrival Story:
I had adopted a dog from our local shelter last year, and when I retired in January, started thinking about adopting another. I was a little hesitant because I never had 2 dogs at once. In fact before I got Itchie, it had been 15 years since I had a dog. When I had to put my giant golden retriever MacDuff to sleep, I swore I would never go through that again. Itchie was my first small dog, and I love him to pieces. I wanted another small dog, and was looking on Petfinder almost every day. One day on a rescue site SOS (Save Our Small) Dogs, a little bichon showed up...a 4 year old female, spayed, housebroken and supposedly very sweet. I got in touch with them immediately and filled out an application. They wanted to get her in a permanent home asap, as she had been in 3 homes in a short period of time. Her original owner couldn't keep her, left her with people who had big dogs who chewed up her ears and who really didn't want her, and then the people who rescued her called SOS because they couldn't keep her either. The poor thing! After being approved, I went to meet her and take her home. She was very timid, but curious. I let her approach me, and once I started petting her, she stayed right by my feet. When I took her home, I followed Cesar's advice...left her in the car, went in and got Itchie, and took them both for a nice long walk. It worked very well. I put them in the back yard and she cautiously explored . Then I showed her the dog door...only once...what a smartie, she got it right away. She quietly walked around the house (of course she slept on the bed with Itchie and me), and greeted visitors very cautiously...but there was no hiding in a corner and shaking, so I was optimistic that she would adjust. Of course, there was a lot of snuggling, petting and singing little Roxie songs(believe it or not the dogs seem to like my singing even if no one else does). And Itchie was absolutely amazing. He did a lot of sniffing, but it was as though he recognized she was confused (can a dog recognized a damaged psyche?) and was so very gentle with her. He never seemed to mind the attention I paid her as long as I gave him his usual pets and kisses. About a week after I brought her home I got up to make coffee and she followed me down the hall prancing and dancing , looking up at me like "let's get breakfast, Mom" with no more "little lost dog" look in her eyes. I was thrilled. I thought it would take longer, but she really seemed to make herself at home after that. They fight over my lap...each laying on one leg, and chase butterflies and squirrels together, and sometimes both try to get through the dog door at once. She really is a love, and I'm so glad I decided to adopt a second dog.

The Life and Times of Roxie

Roxie's Christmas Wish

On the night before Christmas
as we slept by Mom's head
Some noises awoke us!
We sprang from the bed.
Two big doggie stockings
lay under the tree,
And new Christmas sweaters for
Itchie and me.

Then we saw dear Santa with
leashes in hand.
"Come with me
sweet puppies.
We'll travel the land.
I finished up early.
The presents are gone.
Now I want to show you
what else I have done."

"I thought about doggies and
kitty cats who
Came from shelters where
nobody loved them...like you.
Those poor little creatures who
came from a place
where people were mean to them.
What a disgrace!"

And as we went flying all
over the skies
A vision of miracles
greeted our eyes.
The shelters were empty!
The puppy mills gone!
No strays on the streets
"Santa! What have you done?"

I gave the kind-hearted a
gift for the soul...
Someone to love them and
make their lives whole.
A furever friend who would
love them, like you
Made your Mommy's life
fuller and happier, too.

Then off we flew home back
to our Mommy's side.
What a wonderful Christmas!
Woof! What a ride.
With our heads in our paws we went
right back to sleep
With beautiful, furever memories
to keep.

Hope it wasn't just a dream!
