Arrival Story:
Larke was the proverbial cat stuck in a tree. We had just arrived home, and my husband said "I hear a cat crying." We followed the meows, to a neighbors yard, and there, way up in the top branches of a Chinaberry tree, was this little buff colored kitten. Neighbors on the other side had heard the cries too, and came to watch. My husband climbed the tree, and handed her down to me. She had fleas crawling all over, but otherwise looked healthy, just a little thin. No one knew where she might have come from. We decided to take her to our vet, and get her treated for the fleas, so we could bring her inside with our cats, while we searched for her owners. While at the vet, we had them run an FIV/FeLV test, just to be careful. She was negative on those, thankfully. They said she was around 4 months old, and was a little underweight at only 3.5 pounds. We made her a nice area in the laundry room for the night. The next morning, I called Lost Pet Hotline, and gave them her full description. I also placed a "found" ad in our local newspaper. Since there have been no calls, we are going to adopt her into our family, at least for now.

This little girl is the happiest kitten. She purrs non-stop, and is getting along with all the cats here. We always have trouble with one cat, Pete, and newcomers. He just spits and hisses, and gets all the other cats upset too. Well, she won him over in one day. The following morning she bounced up to him, and rubbed her chin against him, and Pete threw a paw around her shoulder and started grooming Larke's head. She won my husband's heart equally quickly. He wanted her from the beginning, and this time I was the one who was trying to be wise. She is very hard to photograph, as she refuses to stay still until I have worn her out with play. UPDATE: Larke is now 8 years old and the most loving, gentle cat we have ever known. I am here to ask for prayers for her. Several months ago she had a lump appear on her shoulder and it opened up like an abscess. We took her to the emergency vet, thinking it might have been a spider bite, since we have those brown recluses here which leave a nasty wound. The vet agreed and gave her a strong antibiotic as no anti-venom was available. It continued to grow so we took her to our regular vet. He did a biopsy and found it was a vaccination site sarcoma. We applied for and received Care Credit so we could afford the surgery but it was too large internally to remove. The decision was made to bring her home since she is still eating and enjoying being with the other cats. But now it is nearing the end. If I think she is in pain, then we will help her cross. Otherwise, we will keep her close and love her every day. Please add your prayers to ours that she is able to stay with us a little longer. UPDATE: Larke made her way to Heaven on Sunday, June 16, 2016. She fought bravely and without complaint. Our precious little girl will never leave our thoughts or hearts.
