Arrival Story:
Welcome, Sammi! He has just joined our family after his loving guardians, an elderly couple, decided he needed someone younger and strong to look after him properly. Mutual friends are the reason for the adoption, and after our tragic loss of our sweet Corrie angel in July, there has been a gigantic space in our hearts and our home that a BIG cat like Sammi, with his super-affectionate and playful purrsonality, will help to fill.

I used to live in Beverly Hills and though I've adopted a little more modest address, I'm still in the lap of luxury and reveling in love, toys, good food, and comfort!

I finished up my work online this evening and went from my office to the living room. It was dark. I bumped somehing. I thought it was a cat toy. When I turned on the light, I saw that it was Sammi.

He has left us.

I'm still far too much in shock to write making any sense. He had been a little weak in the hind end for the past several days, but he still did all his usual things, if slower, and less. He hadn't been eating much for the past few days, but he DID eat, and he drank his water, and used his box.

Yesterday he jumped on the chair and into my lap, and stayed there for a long time while I was on the phone. He hadn't done that in awhile. And today he came out to the living room where I was, jumping up in the same chair -- my dad's chair -- again.

Sammi came to us a little while after I lost my father. He had lived for the first 14 years of his life with an elderly couple in Beverly Hills. When they became old and infirm, they wanted Sammi to have a home with someone young who could care for him well. We had a mutual friend who thought of me and asked me -- my inital answer was no, because Calo was very territorial and I didn't know how introducing another male, who'd been an "only cat" all his life, would fit in. A couple of months after my dad passed, I knew it was time to welcome Sammi into our family. Even though I didn't know if/how it would work out, I was determined that we'd make it work somehow. Sammi needed a loving permanent home. That's all that really mattered.

It took the best part of a year for Sammi to really acclimatize. He was even more territorial than Calo and there was more than one occasion where I had to use a broom to pry apart the furious ball of fur that was the two of them. I saw Sammi jump Calo more than once, and despaired. But again, I knew he needed a loving forever home, and I was determined to make it work. Our home is large and he had his own room when he first joined us; that became his "time outs" room when things got too aggro between him and Calo. Eventually, they learned to tolerate one another. I even got several photos of the two of them curled up within a foot of one another on our bed.

We had seven good years together, and I am so glad to say that he didn't go through a protracted illness or terrible decline, as has been the case with other beloved ones; nor did he contract some terrible disease. He was healthy up almost until the end. Twenty-one is not a bad age for a Lion Kinglet like Sammi.

It is still too soon for it to have really sunk in; it's more like surreal to me right now, and I have had to deal with all the realities of end-of-life decisions already, as well as feeding my surviving loved ones and having some social time with a couple of friends who have been very good in this time of need.

But there is and will be a huge hole in our home and our hearts. Sammi was a big guy. He had a big personality. And an even bigger, loving heart. He was the man of the house. I really don't know how we will get along without him, except that that's what I've always had to do and I'm sure we will all do it, god willing.

Good night, sweet boy. I will always love you and cherish the time we had together -- it was an honor and a privilege. We will all always love you, and miss you, and hold you in our hearts until we meet again in due time. Fly free, Birdman. We'll see you soon.

Just wanted to thank all the CATSTERS and my furmily fur wishing me a Happy PURRthday today. My servant is going to clean my palace and I've already breakfasted on chicken and lamb. Looking forward to some super-premium ocean fish tonight. In between, I'm hittin' the 'nip. OH, YEAH. ;)

My meowm says I'm just "Too Cute". I don't quite know what she means by that, but I DO know no one can resist me. Well, except Maryam. And Baby Su. Calo has his moods, too. But Meowm? ;) She can't get enough of me! Last week when she was washing woodwork, I helped her by overseeing the job and making sure she didn't miss any spots. Cats HATE dirt, you know. She thanked me profusely! and picked me up and snorgled me nine ways to Sunday. I'm happy naow!
