Arrival Story:
We had recently moved house and our four kids were missing familiar surroundings...and their friends. What better way to cheer them up than with a visit to the local petshop...besides, I'd seen the handwritten sign in the window in big block letters, that read **KITTENS**. Heather, then 11, was the first to the kitty cage. She looked back at me with tears in her eyes..."Oh Mom!"...cried my soft-hearted daughter..."Look at these poor little things, there's something wrong with their feet, no-one will EVER want them, PLEEZE can we take one home?" I managed to squeeze past her siblings and got my first look at three tiny orange kittens, maybe six weeks old. A lighter, tiger-striped male played by himself in a corner, a sign on the cage said that he was already sold. Two smaller females wrestled on a carpeted shelf attached halfway up the cage...they were darker and more mottled than striped and their front feet were HUGE...each sprouted three extra toes. I assured Heather that the kittens were fine...they were Polydactyl or 'Mittens kittens'. I rubbed one of the females under her chin and her motor immediately started up. She opened her little pink mouth and promptly stuck a needle-sharp tooth deep into my finger. "I want this kitten!!"...I thought, sucking my injury. But how would we convince my hubby who had the opinion that there wasn't a cat vacancy at our house right now? And how would Dusty, our 3 year old Siamese, take to an addition? I figured we'd worry about that later as I paid the petshop owner, and asked her to hold the kitten until the weekend. We had three days to convince their Dad.....

Bio:
Poor Dad...he was outnumbered...and by the weekend, he was willing if not completely convinced. The kids promised to take care of "Pumpkin" and to do double litterbox duties. The kitten spent her first few days in our oldest daughter Jenny's room, allowing Dusty to get used to the new sounds and smells through a closed door. When we finally thought it time for them to meet, we brought Dusty to the door and cautiously opened it. I don't know who was more surprised, Dusty or us!! A tiny orange puffball, appearing twice her actual size, strutted sideways out of the room...ears flattened, her back and tail resembling McDonald's golden arches. Unafraid, she gave Dusty a glimpse of her tiny dagger-teeth and let out a fairly good HISSSSsss. Poor Dusty looked at us with a "what the h*** is this?" expression. She didn't hiss back, just sat there with a confused look and let the kitten sniff her all over. Within days, Pumpkin had adopted Dusty as her mother and even tried to nurse from her. Pumpkin was a scrawny little thing and we had noticed a tremor...she shook uncontrollably when she slept. Our vet thought that Pumpkin may have neurological problems to go with her odd feet. He treated her for a bad case of ear mites, and told us to take her home and enjoy her, but that she wouldn't amount to much. We have since changed vets!!...and Pumpkin has blossomed into a beautiful cat, full of mischief and affection. We love her sooo much...and Dad is especially fond of his little 'sillycat'.
