Arrival Story:
He, along with his mother and two siblings were found hiding under my mother-in-law's back porch. His mother, "Marmee" (#869983) is a tailless Tortoiseshell Manx (or Manx-mix) who is a bit shy, perhaps semi-feral. We caught them all in box traps, had them fixed and have been working with them in preparation for their adoption into loving "furever" homes.

Bio:
Milo is the most outgoing, curious, adventurous kitten in the litter. Manx cats have four classifications: a "rumpy," which has no tail (just a tuft of fur and an indentation where the actual tail should be), a "riser" (small piece of cartilege or bone which feels 'bumpy' when stroked), a "stumpy" (partial tail) and "longy" (full-length tail). I believe Milo is either a "rumpy" or a "riser," and although we don't know much about his ancestry, the vets have confirmed that the kittens were born that way (not docked). He's probably of mixed breed as he lacks the short, round appearance (body and head) characteristic of the Manx; although he is quiet and doesn't meow often. His mother (#869983/ see photo to left) is a quiet, very reserved cat who although has never been picked up will come to you when offered treats, allow herself to be petted and brushed on most occasions and will gently eat from your hand. Like the Manx, she is tailless with the characteristic elevated hindquarters, very affectionate towards her kittens, and has a tendency to hiss or emit a soft, low growl whenever someone enters the room. This has dimished over time as the kittens have gotten older; and we believe that with time she could probably be acclimated to an indoor domestic lifestyle by someone who has the experience, time and patience. We would keep them ourselves, but we currently have four cats already (the oldest female of which can be territorial at times); and we cannot risk inciting behavior problems among our established cats. Milo is very loving, curious and playful. Coming from a semi-feral background, he may be a little shy at first, but should warm up if given just a little extra time and space to get used to new people and surroundings. He has never been around dogs or small children, however, so he'd probably do best in a relatively quiet home (here it's been mostly myself and my husband) with a couple or small family with older children or teenagers. He has been neutered, dewormed, given his first-year basic vaccinations (rabies, FVRCP) and microchipped. NO DECLAWING, please. We are accordingly asking a reasonable adoption fee and preference will be given to experienced cat owners offering Milo an indoor lifestyle.

Milo's Mischievous Musings

Hello, it's MEEEE -- Milo!

Greetings and welcome to my diary! As you probably already know by now, me, my two sister siblings (Bear and Cathy) and our tortoiseshell mother, Marmee were all rescued by this really nice lady and her husband and we're all currently looking for good homes! We had been living underneath someone's back porch; and although Mom did her best to try and take care of herself and us, too, it just wasn't working out too well.

The older lady who owned the house would feed us once in a while, maybe (whenever she remembered we were there); but she didn't like kitty cats too much. She might've thought she did, but when it came to actually taking care of kitties and providing for their needs, she wasn't very knowledgable or committed. You see, she grew up on a farm over sixty years ago, and back then people didn't care for their kitties like they do now. We didn't know any of this at the time, but the last cat she owned was about twenty years ago -- a big orange, battle-scarred tom who spent most of his time outdoors, roaming, fighting and causing many other little kittens (similar to ourselves) to be born into the neighborhood. From what we'd heard, he didn't pay any kitten-support (and neither did his owner), so that wasn't a very good situation at all.

Anyway, based on my kitty mommy's limited experience with humans, we didn't know there were people who could be kind and good. So since this older lady wasn't getting any purrs, rubs or head-butts from us -- in fact, far from being lap-warmers we would run away whenever anyone tried to get too close! -- unfortunately she didn't have much patience or see much use for keeping us around. :(

Thank goodness we were all rescued from that place!! =^..^= If someone didn't help us soon, we all might've wound up at the county pound, where we all would've met a very sad end -- so I am SOOOOOO VERY grateful!! =^..^= *purrrr-ruuuubbb-purrrrr!* It took a while, but we gradually, eventually learned what it was like to be loved, given regular, good quality food, played with and held and cuddled. So we're all getting used to domestic life now, albeit each at our own slightly different pace.

When we were very young, we would hiss and spit at anyone who came too near. So at first we were kept in a kitty playpen covered with a sheet on three sides, with a little box to hide in so that we would learn to feel safe. Our new adoptive person-Mommy (I'll refer to her as "Mommy" from here out) sometimes would feed us treats on a spoon. I don't know what it's called, but it smelled so good and it tasted like chicky-meat....YUMMY!! I had never dreamed anything could taste so wonderful, especially having lived mostly on bugs and mice and whatever our kitty-mommy could find outdoors for us; and despite our skittishness we just couldn't resist it!! *licks lips* :-3P

I was the first one to bravely venture out of our little playpen to investigate our new home; and I've been the 'leader' of our little pack ever since! We've come a long way since we first got here. We were all spayed and neutered about a month ago. That was a somewhat scary but interesting adventure where I got to ride on this big ferry boat, and watch seagulls and all kinds of neat stuff I had never seen before! =^..^= I've gotten over my fear of heights (well, almost!), and my sisters and I are looking good in our new colorful collars.

The first day I wore mine, I was somewhat of a bad kitty. I fussed and figeted and pulled it off when my Mommy wasn't watching! But Mommy says it's for our own good, in case we ever got outside and got lost, whoever found us would know how to help us get back home and safe again. According to Mommy, a lot more kitties wind up euthanized (I don't know what that big word means, but it sure doesn't sound very nice!) in shelters because they had no identification, than have been trapped or otherwise injured by wearing a collar; so I guess we'll give it a shot.

Oh, and speaking of shots *winces*, we all also got those the day we were fixed. :-3 [ "Fixed"? I didn't even realize I was broke! =P ] *~OUCH!~* But Mommy says we're good on our basic vaccinations now and won't have to have those again for almost a year. So I am at least glad for that, YAY! I have to go see the doctor again tomorrow though, because I've had a little trouble lately with sneezing on occasion (no watery eyes or runny nose, though). Plus Mommy's noticed that I also tend to get winded (panting) while running around and playing with my kitty siblings. Mommy is concerned about me -- I think a bit more than she lets on -- but she says not to worry, that the "dog doctor" (I guess it won't be so bad this time, if the doctor is for dogs and not kitties!) will be able to figure out what's causing it and how to fix it. I might need some medicine or maybe a temporary change of scenery. So we will hope for the best and see what we find out.

I did something very funny the other day recently that made Mommy laugh and laugh.... We were in the same room the other day and Mommy was facing the opposite direction busy with something or other when all of a sudden she heard this big *~KERPLASH!!~* ... Turned out I had jumped up on what I thought was (well, usually it is) a nice perch for sitting or napping -- only to land right in the TOILET BOWL!! -_- As my daddy later said when he found out about it, "[I'll bet he] REALLY tried to get it going then!..." Mommy said she wished she'd had the video camera up and running! I sure didn't think it was funny though! :-( I was all wet on my feet, legs and about the lower third of my tummy!

Needless to say, I jumped right out of there, not even waiting for Mommy to help me, and darted across the room! All I could think of was to get away from that big...*thing* that was trying to have me for a snack! Mommy grabbed a towel and did her best to dry me off, but I wasn't in such a good mood then. Toilet water, ugh! The very thought!! I've heard that some humans actually put this stuff on deliberately in order to smell nice -- what ARE they thinking??! :-( It took me all morning to get my fur and coat groomed just the way I wanted it, and now what a mess I was!

Oh well, that's all for now -- see ya next time.
