Arrival Story:
One evening in August 1991, I heard a cat crying outside but when I went out to investigate I couldn't find anyone. Sputnik, my gentle giant of a Maine Coon mix, eventually sat beside the door, staring at me and meowing until he guilted me into going back out for a really intense search. I had assumed it was just one of the many neighbors' cats out looking for a date, and was shocked to discover a small kitten cowering in the bushes. When I lured her out with some food, I was appalled to see that she was barely more than a skeleton wrapped in fur--I didn't expect her to survive, much less thrive, but she turned out to be in good health other than being virtually starving. She was afraid of me at first, but when she realized that she had a friend, she climbed all over me and wouldn't let me out of her sight.

Papercut has been an absolute sweetheart to her humans, and makes a little "squeak" and goes all "wriggly" like a puppy when we tell her how gorgeous she is. She gets impatient when we comb her, which can be problematic because of her long coat--one spring we took her to groomer for a short cut, the experience was kind of upsetting for her but it made the summer so much easier. A previous groomer remarked that she was "too strong" for him. Papercut had a ferret friend, Gizmo, and they used to play tag, back and forth across the living-room. She is less friendly towards our companion rats, and will avoid interacting with them, especially since our siamese buck Zero gave her an investigative nip on the nose.. Papercut's attitude toward other cats has been mixed--it took her a few weeks to accept Fritta but after this adjustment the two were best friends for years, until Papercut began slowing down in her later years. She tolerates the boys but lets them know she's the alpha kitty. Her closest feline friend was probably Sputnik, her protector and mentor. When he crossed the Bridge in July of 2001, Papercut clearly mourned for his loss, and howled every night for months.
