Arrival Story:
I went to the SPCA just to look at the cats (always a bad idea). After several visits I had decided to adopt this beautiful but kind of aloof buff colored cat they were calling Sam, but the day I went to get him there was a cat that had just arrived that day because her family was moving to New Orleans. (I'm still at a loss as to why the move required them to give up their cat, but in retrospect it may have saved her life because she was not in New Orleans for Hurricane Katrina.) She was the friendliest cat I have ever seen. She rubbed against our legs and purred like crazy. The SPCA people were calling her Misha (actually a boy's name) but her bio said her name was originally Quasimodo (also a boy's name). We thought that was too much of a mouthful for one little cat so we renamed her Tobin (after a nobel laureat economist - actually also a boy, but who cares). She was shy at first and stayed in the bathroom with her food and bed. After a while she was going around the upstairs, but wouldn't go downstairs because that was the dog's domain. We slowly lured her down by moving her food down one step every couple of days. Her travels increased immensely when we got the second cat, Buttercup, who showed Tobin that the dog was a big pushover and she shouldn't be afraid. We recently moved into a new apartment and now all the pets co-exist together in the entire apartment, woohoo!

Bio:
Starting almost a year ago, Tobin had a series of medical problems culminating in the removal of one of her ear canals (she is now deaf on one side, but has not let that slow her down). Please see her diary for more information. There have been slow, but major breakthroughs with regards to Tobin's relationships with both Bryher and Buttercup. For a long time she wouldn't come anywhere near the dog and when we tried to get them near each other, Tobin hissed and clawed my arm. Now Tobin will even sleep on his bed with him and has been seen on occasion rubbing against his legs with her cheek to scent him. Likewise, Tobin hated Buttercup when we got her, but (although they still don't love each other) they now live nicely together, sometimes even sleeping together on the couch or bed without playing what we like to call "whack-a-doodle." See now, there's more than enough love to go around - no need to be jealous!

International Paper Day

We just celebrated the best holiday of all time - International Paper Day! Well, that's not what the humans call it, they call it Christmas, but International Paper Day is what it should be called. On International Paper Day, the humans take bunches of paper, aka the best playing/sleeping/hiding material in the world, and throw it all over the apartment. Then I, the reaper of the benefits of International Paper Day, jump and pounce and generally frolic in the paper until such time as I am tired, and then I curl up on the paper and take a catnap. The only bad thing about International Paper Day is that it is but a fleeting event. After a short time the humans cleaned up the paper and put it out of my reach. Sigh. Only 347 or so days until the next International Paper Day.

Gosh Darn Stairs

Okay, so in our old apartment we had a set of stairs. Whew was it a workout going up and down them. Then one day Mom told me we were moving to a new apartment. I was so excited because I thought maybe there would be no stairs, but is that the case? NOOO. Now there are not one or two or even three levels, but four levels to the new apartment!!!! Do you know how many stairs that is? Well I, for one, am not going up past the bedroom, which is the first level above the main floor. Four stories, my tushy! That's just crazy.

Whew! My cholesterol is ok!

They made me fast for 12 hours and then rechecked my cholesterol... now it was only 109 (normal is 90). So it's a little high, but not 9 times too high. Mom is very relieved.
