Arrival Story: Although Sarah's home is listed on this page as "Squaw Valley, CA", she actually lives in Chicago, IL. I originally put up this page as an adoption page at the request of a friend of mine in Victorville, California. In 1990, Sarah was adopted as a kitten by my friend Terri's husband. On August 13, 2008, Terri contacted me to ask if I could foster-home Sarah for two months while she traveled out of state on her job. She and her husband had recently separated, and he had moved halfway across the country to Chicago. I didn't feel that it would be fair to my husband to ask him if we could take Sarah, as he already suffers terribly from allergies to the four cats that we already have, so I offered to put up an adoption page on Catster for Sarah, and Terri agreed.

Bio: The response from the kind folks at Catster was wonderful, and I had several offers of a good home for Sarah, including two offers in California. When I told my friend, however, I was upset to learn that, according to Terri, her husband now insisted on taking Sarah to live in Chicago with his mother and sister. I tried to tell her that a long trip like that, especially in the summertime, would be very stressful for an 18-year-old cat, but I wasn't able to change her mind, and she made plans to drive Sarah part of the way to Chicago, with her ex meeting up with her and driving Sarah the rest of the way. Terri assured me that they would both take every precaution to keep Sarah in an air-conditioned environment and provide her with plenty of water. Once I learned that Terri's husband was willing to drive halfway across the country to get Sarah, I felt that he must truly care about Sarah and that she would be going to a loving home. In any event, the matter was now out of my hands. Terri promised to keep me updated on Sarah's progress. On August 20, 2008, Terri informed me that after her husband picked Sarah up, Sarah became extremely ill as they were driving through Utah. The husband took her to the vet, and Terri told me that Sarah was suffering from "severe dehydration". Sarah spent a day at the vet, and Terri flew out to Utah so she could help her husband with driving for the rest of the trip so it wouldn't take as long to get Sarah to her new home in Chicago.

UPDATE (August 22, 2008): I spoke to Terri today, and learned that Sarah survived her setback, and is now in her new home, a bit thinner but SAFE! I am so relieved. I will add more details when I hear of them.

UPDATE #2 - August 25: I spoke with Terri again yesterday, and she says Sarah is doing great now! She's eating, using her litter box, and sleeping on the bed...pretty much what would be expected of an 18-year-old senior lady cat. She is living in a condo in Chicago where she will be kept strictly indoors. Thanks to all who lit a candle, sent purrs, prayers, and words of encouragement for sweet Sarah! This started out as a sad and scary tale, but it has a happy ending!
