   Leave a treat for Ethan & Zoe 8/3/08 - 8/6/08

August 3rd 2008

Arrival Story:
Ethan and Zoe's mother, who we named Audrey, was apparently just dropped over the fence at our shelter a couple of months ago. We thought we heard a kitty crying, but couldn't find her at first. Within a few days the crying became more intense. I was sitting at my desk and heard it distinctly coming through the floor vents. After a couple of hours, I had Audrey in a carrier and caged in our medical room. Within a few weeks, her belly began to bulge, and we knew she was pregnant. I planned to take her to my house for the birth, and to keep her until the kittens were weaned, after which time I'd return them all to the shelter.

She caught me by surprise on Sunday, August 3rd. I got a call to come into the shelter, that she had had the kittens. Her nipples hadn't even been protruding! The kittens didn't start out very well, we believe that one had dropped to the floor from a shelf in the cattery. The other was found in the pebbles in the outside cattery area with pebbles stuck to her umbilical cord. Audrey wanted nothing to do with them, and she had absolutely no milk. We bottle raised them for a couple of days, they were rallying, but took a turn for the worse a few days later. They passed knowing the comfort of our touch, and were buried under the big oak tree at the shelter. The service was lovely and was attended by several of us. It just so happened that we'd found an adorable mouse who had died for unknown reasons that morning in our laundry room, so we buried the mouse along with Ethan & Zoe and a stuffed toy and some flowers. I hope they get adopted up there at the Rainbow Bridge.
