Arrival Story:
I adopted Mushroom from the West Babylon Animal Shelter, in Long Island, NY. She was the cutest baby. She was with her other brothers and sisters--her mom had given birth 6 weeks prior. She was all white with just some splotches of brown and black on her forehead. As she got older, though, the splotches disappeared. With the exception of some mottling on her nose, Mushroom has become an entirely white cat! Mushroom was a tiny thing when I brought her home. I adopted her to befriend my older cat, Zuzu. At first, she and Zuzu didn't get along. But with Zuzu's sweet disposition and loving ways, Mushroom was soon accepted and became part of the family. Since she was the baby, she was often spoiled. But because she was so cute, I forgave her everything. So did Zuzu. Zuzu passed away in 2004. She was 13 years old and the most recent move proved too much for her fragile body. After losing her beloved friend, I'm not sure Mushroom will ever go back to being her old self. Unfortunately, she has recently become not very affectionate--she's sometimes even quite timid. Trying to help her get over what seemed like depression, I adopted Izzy for Mushroom, so she wouldn't be alone. Then we adopted Bella for Izzy, since Izzy was a playful kitten and Mushroom was still in mourning and not very playful. Now she's got plenty of companionship! At first all the kitties didn't get along, and I'm not entirely sure that she and Bella will ever be 'friends'. She is easily intimidated and annoyed by Bella, who is very rambunctious. Mushroom tends to growl whenever Bella gets too frisky and playful with her. I see the old Mushroom every time it's time for bed. She acts like her old self because she loves to lay me. Then she purrs and kisses, especially when she's being scratched on her head! She can't get enough of the attention! Right now I think she just tolerates Bella, but I notice the love she has developed for Izzy. She and Izzy play together and I sometimes see the kitten she used to be in their play. She is also protective of Izzy. Whenever Bella gets too wild in her play with Izzy, Mushroom comes to Izzy's aide. I think she'll someday come to love her almost as much as she loved Zuzu.
