Arrival Story:
At the ripe old age of 30 I decided it was time to buy a house. I am single so I wanted company. I decided to get a cat so a friend took me to Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary. I had never had a cat before so I asked a helper for advice on which cat would suit me. He talked me into getting two cats! I am a sucker for a sob story. They had guessed Bernie's age at 11 yrs old but the helper felt that maybe he was younger than that. Apparently he and Ross (my other cat) had come from the same home and been at the animal sanctuary for between 8-10 months. Anyway I moved into my house on the 4th November 2007. A volunteer came to check my house on the 5th November and told me I could go straight there and pick them up. So I rushed to buy stuff for them and they came home with me. I know Bernie is an older cat but they are both wonderful. I can't believe they were at Bleakholt for so long. I think they were waiting for me!

Bio:
Bernie is amazingly vocal. As I had never had a cat before I had always thought of cats as quiet creatures. How wrong I was! Bernie doesn't just make noises for the sake of it. He is trying to communicate with me! He will stand looking at me or on me or follow me around talking to me - very loudly!!! As a rescue cat I can only assume he learnt that at his previous home. I think he gets frustrated with me sometimes for not understanding me. He never miaows to Ross my other cat, just humans. After all we are a bit thick! Bernie also likes to know what is going on - no make that needs to know! He has to follow me around, especially to the toilet, just incase he misses something. He is an indoor/outdoor cat. I leave the back door open and he spends most of the time coming in and out just to make sure everything is ok. He also sits and watches me through the door sometimes. Bernie is a scaredy cat! He doesn't like strange cats and will do anything to avoid them! Although he goes outside he never wanders far (mainly in my garden or the next one) and always comes when he is called. To visitors to my house Bernie can come across as aloof especially compared to Ross. He likes to choose when he is fussed over. Bernie is infact the most affectionate of my cats. It's just he likes attention at bedtime. He is my Casanova! He is the best cuddler in the world. He will come and lie on my arm, or with his head on the pillow next to me and put his paws on my face. It is sooooooo sweet. I love it. I don't even mind him waking me up for a cuddle! Although he doesn't like it when Ross gets the best place before him. So Bernie doesn't feel like he needs love from other people. In fact the only use they have is if they have food! At which point he will sit staring at them to try to get some. If I have food it's another matter! He will try to sniff the food as it goes into my mouth. Licking his lips and talking to me to convince me to give him some. Bernie has even been known to come and smell my breath when he comes in from outside. I am sure it is to check that he hasn't missed out on some food! I love Bernie!

So sad!

Ross and I have had a terrible few days. My human has taken us to the vet twice in 2 days. The second day she left us there all day. We were scared and hungry when we went.

The people at the vets were lovely BUT ...

They shaved part of one of my front legs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I look sooo silly. I keep trying to lick it to make it come back but it hasn't yet. I hope it does soon.

Anyway they stuck lots of sharp things in me. One made me very very very sleepy.

(blood test, sedation for x-ray, microchipped for the 2nd time - dunno how he lost the 1st 1 and rabies jab)

Ross only had 1 sharp thing stuck in him - they must like him more than me! Although I have no idea why - I am the best!

Then my human came to get us. We both told her how cross we were with her when we were in her moving thing (car). Then when we came home Ross was all over her but I wanted to be left alone. I think I worried my human because I hardly spoke to her all yesterday and this morning. Then we had a lovely cuddle on the bed this afternoon and I purred and purred and purred. I didn't even mind Ross coming for a cuddle - as long as he stayed on the other side of MY human. I think I will talk a bit more to her now.

I'm hungry!!!

I am sooooo hungry!!!

My stomach won't stop making noises but my human won't feed me!!!

Why won't she feed me. I am giving her loads of love and purrs and I know she can hear my stomach. Next door can hear my stomach rumbling because it's that loud!

I wish I'd eaten more yesterday but I was shaken up from my visit to the vet.

A note from my human.
It's killing me not to feed Bernie. His stomach is sooooo noisy! But he has to have an x-ray today which means he may have to have an anesthetic. Poor him.
I am not looking forward to putting him and Ross in the carriers. They know what they are for now.

A terrible day!!!

July 17th 2008 12:56 pm   [link to this entry]

I have had a terrible day! All was going well up until my human picked me up and stuffed me into a carrier!!! She had put Ross into one too. He was scared so I demanded to know what was happening and where she was taking us!

She put us in one of the scary and noisy moving things, she called it a car. Then she took us to a strange place that smelled very weird and was full of strange people. She called it a vet.

Then... I got taken out and some strange woman looked me over and stuck something sharp in me. (A vaccination!) I demanded to know what she was doing and my human had to cheek to remark that I was always this noisy. The vet looked at me and said I looked like I had some siamese in me. She said my face, body shape and the fact that I like having a chat with everyone were very siamese like. I knew I was special! I tell my human that all the time!

She also said that there was no way I was 12 years old. Someone must have guessed my age based on my teeth which are not as good as they should be. My human said she doesn't think my previous owner fed me dry food. I love dry food now! Anyway the vet lady said she thinks that I am 8 or 9 years old. But does that mean I can't be in the old furts club anymore :( ?

Anyway just when I was being put back into my carrier the vet lady rubbed this thing all over me. She said she was scanning for my microchip. But they couldn't find it. They could find Ross' chip but not mine. The vet lady said I needed an x-ray to look for it. But I don't know what an x-ray is. After today I am a bit worried.

A note from my human.
Bernie hads to go in for an x-ray tomorrow and he might need to be sedated. Then he and Ross are going to have their rabies injections which they need for the DEFRA pet passport. I have no idea how I am going to get them back in the carriers because they know what they are now lol.
