Orange Tabby

Hank liked to sit on our house and stare down at us. He was the type of cat that simply thought he was "King of the world."

indoors and outdoors

Arrival Story:
Hank was a stray cat who stole our hearts. It was a fall day when we found him- I remember because the leaves were turning red and orange. We were walking home from Family Dollar when all of a sudden a small "Meow" echoed in our ears. My sister was the one who pulled on my moms sleeve and pointed at the opening in those sewers that are at the side of the streets. You know, the ones that you sometimes drop your pocket change into to never see it again. When my mom knelt down and peeked in, two green eyes met her eyes. A cat was stuck down there! Being the animal lover my mom always was, she couldn't just leave him there- so, she reached down and grabbed him and began to pull. It took her fifteen minutes; but, he finally came up. A skinny ball of orange. Back then, we really didn't have the money for no cats, so she put him down and continued to walk. But, he had other plans. Hank followed us halfway there until my mom broke down and told my sister to get him. That day, he became a very respected member of our family. For years Hank would sit on our laps and give us those cat kisses that cats rarely give. He'd sit on the roof of the house and stare down at us as if he knew he was the king of the house. No one ever owned Hank. Hank owned them. It was about four; maybe five; years after the day we bought Hank home that I came home from school and my mom was in tears. She told me that Hank was gone. He'd been hit by a car and died hours before she found him. Of course, I was young and didn't want to believe this. I wanted to see for myself. I did. Hank was hit by a car and left in the road to die; wearing a collar and tags- yet, we got no call. To this day I can't believe how cold some people can be. How can you hit a cat that obviously has a family and not stop to jot down the number? My mom stopped to pull a wild bunny out of the road once after running him over. And that was a wild bunny. Hank was only with us a short time; but, he, too, left a lasting impression on my heart.

Hank loved to give us kisses, and he loved to play with us and Faith.
