Arrival Story:
A friend of mine was living in West Point, NY and working at the military academy in September of 2001. On the night of the 11th, after what was obviously a really horrible and stressful day, she and her husband went out for a walk. They heard what sounded like a baby's cry coming from behind their garage, and they went to investigate. They found three tiny kittens, just a few weeks old. They were in bad shape; all were covered in dirt and fleas, they had worms, and they were pretty sick. They brought the kittens inside and called their vet (at the time, they had two cats of their own), who came to the house to check out the babies. One of the kitties died, but two survived - a blue eyed, half siamese, half ginger tabby female, and a ginger tabby male (the one whose lung power probably saved them). My friend wanted to name one of the cats something that would be a reminder of the events of that day, so she decided to name the little orange boy kitty "Dubya". My friend couldn't keep the kittens, but I was planning to move out to the east coast in a few weeks' time, and I told her that I'd love to take them. I drove through West Point on my way from Detroit to Boston and picked up the two surviving kittens - and we've been together ever since.

Bio:
Dub developed a type of immune-mediated anemia in September of 2002, for which he takes medication. He spent a week in the hospital, had surgery and all sorts of tests done, and very nearly died, but he is a fighter, and he came through it all fine. He was hospitalized again for a week in October of 2006 with a suspected flare-up of either pancreatitis or IBS; he has fully recovered from this but still takes medications to manage it. Dub passed away suddenly on the morning of April 3rd, 2008. His papa was able to get there from his office a few blocks away but he wasn't in the exam room at the time. By the time I arrived he was gone. He went into sudden heart failure - no idea what caused it but they are doing an autopsy. He was six years old. We are devastated. Words can't really express what a special and amazing little creature he was, and what he meant to us.
