Arrival Story:
Elvis came to me in 1998, about two months, after my beloved cat Honey died of kidney failure. I was planning a move and wasn't really planning on getting another cat right away, but a friend at work had friends who needed to give up Elvis (which wasn't his name at the time). So I ended up adopting him. At first he was very scared and lonely and hid under the bed, coming out only to eat and use the litter box. Then one day, he trotted out and sat on the bed while I was getting ready for work. An Elvis Presley song was playing on the radio, so Elvis became his new name.

My little guy was a Dumpster baby. He was rescued from a Dumpster in NYC by a kind passerby who heard his mews and feared that someone had abandoned a baby. He took the cat home to a house with two other cats. The cat stayed with the family about a year, when allergy problems forced the family to cut down on the number of pets. That's how he came to me.

We had house guests!

My person's sister and her friend came to visit us overnight. I have met them before but it still took me some time to get used to them, and by the time I did, they were gone! Now I have to catch up on my eating, because I did not want to go to the kitchen while they were here. They were very nice to me, but I like to have my person and my house all to myself! Besides, for days before they came, my person was running that noisy vacuum cleaner and fussing about the house instead of hanging out with me. I couldn't even sit on my favorite couch! I know, many cats don't even have a couch to sit on so I should not complain!

Water woes

My person has been giving me bottled water all weekend because she says we are under a boil-water order. This happened because three water mains broke and the water company is working to fix them, but in the meantime, we are not supposed to drink the water unless it has been boiled first to kill any bacteria in it. My person had some bottled spring water in the fridge, though, and today she bought more because this could go on for a few more days. I like the spring water. It tastes different. My only complaint is that I like to drink out of the faucet, and of course my person won't allow it.
The fourth of July is upon us, and usually my person would go to see fireworks, but they are canceled this year. Some of them were canceled before the water emergency because of money, but now that there is a worry about water pressure and fires, it appears more of the displays will be called off. This makes me happy, even though my person isn't. I hate the noise from the fireworks. It sounds like thunder, and I hate thunder too. I usually hide when I hear all that racket.
I wish you all a happy Fourth of July, and if your town does have fireworks, I hope all pets will be kept safely inside, away from the noise and the crowds and the possible danger. I recommend that cats and dogs burrow under the bed or in the closet until it's all over.

It's my anniversary!

This month marks 14 years since my person took me home! I was about a year old when I came to live with her. Before that, I was with a nice family who saved me from a dumpster in New York City. But they could not keep me, so a friend of theirs, who worked with my person, brought us together. I will admit I was very lonely and confused at first. Her kitty had just got to Kitty Heaven, and I could still smell the other cat's scent everywhere. And I missed my family terribly, so I just hid under the bed all the time except when I wanted to eat or use the litter box. After a few weeks, though, everything was ok, and things got better when we moved to this house together. Now I can't imagine living anywhere else! There are birds outside my window every morning, and I have a big chair in the living room to nap on. Sometimes we even go outside on the porch when the weather is nice. Life is good, and I have no complaints except that I wish my person would update my diary more often!
