Arrival Story:
Back in 1998, I wanted to adopt a second cat, so I went to a "meet & greet" event, where a local animal hospital hosted some staff and animals from another animal shelter. They had brought several dogs, but only two cats -- a gorgeous, charismatic tortie, who was likely pregnant, and poor James. He was clearly not happy to be there. He stayed in the corner of his cage and didn't want to come out. When I asked to hold him, though, he sat very calmly in my lap. I decided that Miss Charisma would be ok wherever she went, but poor little James needed a good home and an owner that would let him be himself, in a stable environment where he would feel safe enough to come out of his shell a little. James has always been an introverted, skittish, shy man, but he is affectionate with us, and seems genuinely happy living with us. And we're thrilled to have him!

Bio:
James has undergone several challenges in his life. When I first adopted him, we lived in NJ, with one other cat, Regis. James *adored* Regis, and would never challenge Regis's alpha status. About a year and a half after I adopted James, though, we moved to Ohio so I could attend graduate school. That was a big adjustment for both Regis and James. Both went from being indoor/outdoor cats, to being indoor only cats, because the street we lived on was too busy to let them run free outside. We did put both Regis and James out in the yard on leashes, though, to let them have some exposure to their beloved outdoors. A year and a half after moving into that first place in Columbus, though, we moved to a new place, where both could go in and out... but it was a new place, and that was an adjustment for both Regis and James. And then we adopted Fiona ("Fifi"). The biggest challenge James ever faced, though, was in January of 2003, when his beloved Regis passed on. For months afterwards, James would wander around the house crying, and he lost a lot of his fur. He had no interest in playing with Fifi. He just wanted his Regis back. With time, the loss of Regis got a little easier on James, and in August 2003, we adopted Jack, who, like Regis, was an orange tabby. Jack and James get along pretty well, but James is still not all that fond of Fifi. Physically, James has always had a pretty sensitive constitution. He has always been itchy-prone, and we discovered about a year ago that he has extensive food allergies. Since we started restricting his diet and feeding him higher quality food, though, he has become glossy-furred and really gorgeous. He even seems happier! He has always had problems with his teeth and gums, though, and right now, he has no fangs left -- some fell out on their own, some were removed in dental procedures.
