Arrival Story:
My hubby took the puppy for his morning walk and came rushing back to get me. He had seen a female feral with three kittens in the bushes outside. I got dressed and between us we managed to corral them all and get them inside. The kittens were old enough to wean, so we homed one (later named Einstein - he is scary smart), decided to keep the calico (we have a history with calicos) and before we could home the mama cat and the other little boy, they escaped out of a 2nd floor window! Zoey went with them, but when it began to rain that evening she came back to the door and meowed to be let in. Of course, when we went out, she ran off - but not far. Just far enough so that the humans didn't get any silly impression that she was BEGGING to come in. She sure was glad to get into the dry and fill up with kitty food though. That being feral just isn't what it is cracked up to be.

Zoey was indoors until we came to New Mexico. She took a terrific dislike to Hani and her kittens. When the fighting got just horrific, I moved her out into the barn. She decided that being a barn cat was quite to her liking - and so she still is. She is quite the mouser - using her well honed martial arts skills to keep the feed safe from little theives.

Kittens growing up fast

The babies are growing up fast. Their little eyes are open now. The little calico still hisses at Mom every time she comes in. Dad says "another little psycho". Huh. The pale one is getting very fluffy but Mom still can't tell what color she is going to be. Now she thinks maybe a grey and white bicolor - but very pale grey. The little orange tiger likes to hide in the folds of the big dog bed I stole for them.

No one has seen sister Clarice for four days now. It's a dangerous job, being a barn cat in the desert. If she doesn't show up by the time the kittens are weaned, we'll just keep all three babies, Mom says.

Meanwhile, I'm hunting again. Now and then the humans see me creeping about in the underbrush. Got to make sure the kittens get a taste for the really good stuff, like mouse guts.

Why are you humans making faces?

My babies have opened their little eyes and seen the world firsthand. The pale one took one look and squeezed her little eyes shut again. The little callie (the one my human thought was grey and white - we snuck a bit of orange onto her face) took one look and hissed and spat and the little orange one just follows callie's lead...

I've finally started hunting a bit again. A girls got to keep a paw in.

As if I were not busy enough as one of the only two WORKING cats - three days ago I gave birth to three kittens. Mom shook her head, said something about consorting with huge tiger toms from the desert. Then sighed and said they'll be easy to place, since they'll be great mousers like ME.

Well, of course.

I think sister Clarice had kittens in the rafters last night. She won't tell me and Mom can't get up high enough to see for sure - but Clarice won't come down for breakfast.

I have a grey tiger and white, looks a lot like my brothers Cowboy and Einstein, an orange tiger, and a very pale golden kit. Mom thinks it might, just MAYBE turn out Siamese colored like that brat MYST. Huh, I hope not. She is about useless - and much too smooschy with humans. Her job is apparently to be sweet and beautiful. Disgusting.

I spent three days in the nest with my kits, but it's time for me to get back to work on the rodent patrol - at least part-time.

Mom took a photo of me and my new kittens. She was surprised it came out as the pump house is quite dark - but it isn't too bad.
