Arrival Story:
About fourteen years ago someone stole 14 Maine Coon Kittens and their Mama and from what we can gather they must have gotten scared and decided to drop them across the street in the woods across from our house. About eight months went by before we could start capturing them, they had gotten so wild it took us that long to start getting them caught. Of course as we were doing the capturing they were steady having babies. Just the first year alone they had 22 babies. In fact it took us around 5 - 6 years to finally catch all of the offspring and have them all spayed and neutered. As they were being born we would get the kittens and the mother and keep them in a safe house which turned out to be our very best friend, Wanda, until they were ready for adoption. We adopted them out with the understanding that they had to be spayed or neutered, kept inside and never given away. We still keep track on where the offspring is and how they are doing. You will laugh about this little item. We even interviewed different vets until we found the most wonderful vet that wanted to care for this colony as much as we did. I guess we went and saw maybe a dozen before we happened upon Dr. Kit Charbonneau at Genito Animal Hospital. Talk about being heaven sent. He is the kind of vet that cries when you cry, frets when you fret and believes putting down an animal is the last resort. He has cared for this colony since day one and for that we are forever grateful. In fact the first bake sale we had was at the Animal Hospital and that was where we started selling our knives. We did bake sales, small craft shows and sidewalk sales. Then we started doing the larger local shows, went on to the juried shows and now here we are on the world wide web. Who would have thought that someone dropping kitties would have led to this. I had always been crafty just about my whole life and can say my heart is where my crafting is along with my family and my kitties. The colony is down to 17 now. All have been spayed and neutered, they get their shots every year and get fed twice a day out of pocket. They are our babies even though they only come home to be feed. They actually stay across the street in the section of woods that they were originaly dropped. Most of the neighbors look out for them and if anything seems out of the ordinary they give us a call and we go and investigate. If you go to our gallery you will find some pictures of many of them. The colony is still pretty unsure of people but I am able to get close enough to most of them for pictures and feeding. Our babies inside were offspring from these and I miss them so when I am in our studio creating and sewing as they are not allowed in the studio area. So the profits from the knives goes into a fund to take care of these babies. We love what we do and they each have a special place in our hearts.
