Arrival Story:
Hamlet came to live with my aunt while I was visiting her house in Florida. He was very skittish and we learned that he was deaf. He was reluctant to come to people, but he and I became close. I decided to try using sign language to see if we could communicate. I would make the letter "h" and motion it towards me. He soon learned that this meant I wanted to pet him! I made sure not to sneak up on him by tapping the floor while I was still quite some distance from him. This helped to create trust between us and our bond became that much closer.
