Being a guard Kitty

Arrival Story:
We went to the shelter to get two cats and Nico was my husband's choice. We were looking through the window at all the kitties in there and I had already picked out my kitty, Lena, when my husband saw Nico. He was in a kennel with about 4 or 5 of his litter mates and he appeared to be the only one really awake and active. I say the only one because there was one other kitty in there that was kind of awake because Nico was trying to play with it and bat at it. The workers pulled him out of the kennel and he climbed all over my husband and it was love. When the shelter couldn't verify with our apartment that we were allowed pets, they put him and Lena in their own kennel together while we went back and sorted things out. When we got back to the shelter their was another family in the cat room they asked us which kitties were ours and when we told them, they replied " Oh, you've got the hisser." Well, Nico had apparently been hissing at everything and anything while we were gone. When we took him out, he was fine, but then he had to get micro chipped. He was angry and hissing and had to be wrapped up in a towel like a big burrito while he got his shot. After a few days home I noticed something sticking out of his shoulder blades and called the vet. When we got him to the vet, they said he was no longer micro chipped. The shelter wouldn't pay for the vet to do it, so we had to take the poor thing back to the shelter to get re-chipped. I kept telling him it was o.k. he wasn't staying and now he's forever ours.

Nico is not the most cuddly of kitties. He has definitly gotten a lot more friendly the older he has gotten, but he is very intimidating. He doesn't really like my husband and he always hisses at him. Same thing goes for the dog and he just avoids the skinpup. He's a pretty big cat and doesn't like to be picked up and will let you know. When he was a kitten getting babysit by Grandma and Grandpa some of their friends were over and were convinced that Nico would love them. Grandma tried to convince them otherwise and after 2 different people picked him up she went to get him to let him down and he swiped at her and gave her 5 stiches in the mouth...ooops. He is very curious about what is going on and once company has arrived and things have settled down, he'll usually come out to visit, but doesn't want to be touched. In the summer he likes to go outside and hunt. He will whine and whine at the screen door until you let him out. We used to leave the door open so he could come in and out as he pleased(plus Lena freaks out if you shut the door), but they both started bringing in their kills as treats for us and that was the end of the open door. He is still a hisser to this day, but we wouldn't trade him for anything.
