Arrival Story:
About six months after we adopted Carlos, re-adjusting our cat household up to the number of three, one of us found that he didn't wish to have a home without a grey kitty (we had lost our first grey kitty, Aloysius, about nine months previous). So, he got online and found a beautiful grey kitty (part Russian Blue) who looked a lot like our friend. But we didn't want to replace him-- we thought of this new addition as more of an homage to Aloysius's former greatness. In any case, we sent an email to the woman who had this cat up for adoption, and were asked to write an essay, and to pay a hefty fee. We drove out to Michigan from Chicago to pick him up, and were pleased that we made it just on time-- we thought. We forgot Michigan was on Eastern time, while Illinois is on Central-- we were an hour late! The woman who had our friend was just about to leave, she said, but we were able to pick him up just in time. We drove him home, and the little boy mewled all the way. We weren't sure if we had just adopted a very vocal cat, or if something was wrong. Luckily, one of us thought that maybe he was thirsty, and we were able to give him some water. It worked-- he lapped up that water and was very sweet. When we got back to Chicago we realized something unfortunate. The woman we adopted him from had misrepresented him as being already fixed when we inquired. It turned out he had *just* been fixed the day before, and to our girl cats, he still smelled like an unaltered male. Consequently, one of Alexei's sisters, Mina, imprinted badly on him and she has never fully accepted him. In every other way, though, he has been the most amazing cat and having him in our household has been a joy. Having another grey kitty around has gone part of the way toward healing the loss we experienced when we lost Aloysius, but Alexei is a special kitty in his own excellent way. We're so glad to have him with us!

Alexei is an incredibly friendly and sweet boy who loves to play. He created a game that he plays with his boy human-- we call this "ball game." It involves the boy human throwing a mini-pom ball with a very dense foam core down the corridor of our kitchen, and him retrieving it. Unfortunately, we can no longer find any more of these balls to purchase and ball game can only be played with these balls! We are down to two of them right now. (If anyone reading this knows where we can get more of these balls, please contact us!) Alexei also loves to play fight-- or "boy fight" as we call it-- with his brother Carlos. Sometimes he tries to "boy fight" with his sisters, but that doesn't provoke a very good response. He is the only cat we've ever known who always walks around with his tail up high in the air-- "parade tail" is what this is called. Alexei also loves to jump on people's backs (if you bend over in this house, you can count on him landing on your back) and to bite men's heads, especially bald or balding men. He is the A #1 cuddler, napper, and sleeper. He's the only kitty that gets bedroom privileges as he's the only one who doesn't stand at the door and cry to be let out. Many days, even when our alarm goes off, he would rather cuddle for a while longer than get his breakfast. He is such a sweet little man, and we don't know what life would be like without him.
