Diary of a NOT FAT lover boy

Saying "No" to Nutro

Dear Diary,

As my mommy said on FB when she joined the "No to Nutro" event, we hope that Catster doesn't have a contract with Nutro as an advertiser that would cost them a bundle of money to get out of because we love our Catster and we don't want to see them hurt financially. And we know that complaints from the site users would not be a justifiable breach of contract.

On the other paw... given what we do know about Catster, that it is a relatively small operation (See Mr. Ted's lovely comment on my friend, Lucy's diary [sisfur of Leo and Charlie, whose pages you can get to from my sisfur Emily's page where she has badges of them, and yes this means I'm too lazy to make the link to Lucy's diary])mommy cannot fathom why you would have made a deal to use their advertisements on this site. I mean if you really do read effurything on the site then you know of the heartbreak suffered by those who lost their beloved furkids to tainted food. And it's my understanding that Nutro was the major culprit. AND it seems from what some of my furriends have been writing recently that Nutro has not changed its ways.

I, fur one, will probably not leave Catster if the Nutro ads stay. (And I'm such a big dope that I don't even know if they are still on!) But then, I never ate Nutro and I am still alive...

sad, confused and concerned purrs,
Edgar

Mum and I read the consumer affairs site yesterday and what happened to those kitties and pups should never have happened. Why Ted would enter into an advertising agreement with them is anyone guess really. But it would be nice for Ted to tell us his side of the story in a blog and get things out in the open.

This food didn't just make kitties and pups sick which in itself is bad enough but may have even killed.

Edgar, my friend, I would like to support your laziness as it's something I (and my mom!) can relate to right now! Here's I am (Lucy!) and here's a link to my page for anycat interested in Top Cat Ted's comment on my diary, "Oh, Catster"!

I agree with you, Edgar. I love Catster and we are staying because we have such wonderful Catster friends but I am very hopeful that HQ will address the Nutro issue. It's horrible to think how devastating it must be for Catsters who lost beloved babies to Nutro to come on Catster and see those ads. Very sad.

Steven here - the business cat.

It's mainly my fault for being away for the long weekend and not being able to respond quickly to your concerns about Nutro. Over the past 6 years we have been really cautious about how to deal with all the major pet food brands as all of them have records that in some way have not held up to the higher litmus test we demand. The major pet food brands feed most of our cats and dogs, and the responsibility for providing affordable, nutritious and quality food firmly rests on their shoulders. But it is our duty as pet owners to hold them accountable to their actions today whilst having a mind for they have done before, because that is where we can affect change. It is also Catster's and my responsibility to make sure that if we take advertiser's money, we owe a due diligence to our community to uncover the truth behind any talk.

The ads you have seen were set to run on Dogster and I'm a bad kitty for not thinking about the fact that our vet blog was on Catster too. The campaign is running because we had asked the Dogster community for its feedback on the brand first. We decided to do business with Nutro - and its Natural Choice Brand - because it was the first time a large company had openly solicited feedback from its customers on a community site like ours. And we are talking homepage feature and an email blast that reached over 100,000 people. This is amazing because they knew they were going to get a boat load of negative opinions as quite frankly nobody talks about how much they love pet food food when asked. But you know what ? - they personally responded to every email and the negative stories we heard were addressed when people heard both sides of the story, heard what their policies are now, heard from vets and real people about their experiences and most importantly what contingencies they have in place now to prevent future harm to our pets.

My promise to you is to always think about the community first. I might be the business guy here but i am you loudest advocate when it comes to thinking through who we do business with and how we keep the lights on and make sure all our cats get catnip. Would you like me to ask Nutro for a place for the kitties to air our concerns too ? I will continue to monitor the forums and emails as I always do.

Hey Big Guy,
We are furry disappointed with Catster and the Nutro ads too, but we will stay as well. We love our furiends too much to leave. But Catster's credibility as an Information Site for Kits is in the litter box now, in our opinion - we will never recommend them again to anyone looking for reliable info on cats.

Hi Edgar,
Have you read Ted's conversation with Samoa's mom?
http://www.catster.com/cats/283038/diary/Sam oa_says/676284
Gives us hope that this situation will be resolved and we can be a happy community again.
Also, best not to write N***O. Angel Scooter explained why in the forums somewhere..but my heads is the clouds right now :)
Love ya
Alfie

What happened to those kitties and pups should never have happened but I read one of diaries of my mates who have had chat with top cat Ted and he said they are only on the vet blog until end of June. I fully support my mates in wanting the ads gone but let's wait until end June to see if they're removed.

I purrsonally like the new changes. the new page is work in progress and progress takes time and changes are being made slowly.
