Arrival Story:
We watched this cat that hung around, a female she would not let us get close to her. We fed her in hopes to catch her no luck, she started getting big, I knew she was pregnant. In April we were cleaning up the yard and at the end next to the woods we were cleaning up brush and stepped on a pile of fallen leaves and the cat ran out, I figured she must have had kittens so looked and sure enough I did not know how many but could barely see a light creme colored kitten in the hole. We placed a board over the top to support the hole from rain. We watched for a few months from a distance, she would move her kittens around but we always found them, there were three. We eventually got to feeding the kittens but could never get close enough to touch them. They would run and play and I tried my best to catch them but no luck. In August noticed the little girl was throwing up would not eat just sat over water bowl but I could not catch her. A week later she came up to me with her Mom and hollared, I knew she was very sick, she let me pick her up. I took her to vet she was so far gone, I had her put to sleep. A week later her brother that I named Mr. Finn started throwing up but I could not catch him either, not until a few days later he was so weak I caught him, to the vet he went. They thought it was distemper the symptoms fit and he was so far gone I had him put to sleep, the little girl had no white blood cells so that is what was suggested distemper. A week went by we thought the last one Huckleberry would be alright but he started throwing up same symptoms, won't eat won't drink just sit hunched up by the water bowl. We could not catch him either till he got so weak my husband caught him and he said lets try another vet so off we went. I told the vet what was suggested as distemper she said no she did not think it looked like distemper, she thought it was poisoning, She suggested Vitamin K and fluids and an antibiotic. We took him everyday for 4 days for fluids and we didn't think he would make it, I thought maybe I should let him go to his mama and die, at least he would have comfort there, he was terrified of us, His Mama was looking for him we would let her see him from his carrier but decided to keep him inside with alot of care. He made it thank the Lord, for he is so special to us. He would always watch my husband work on the car and he would cock his head from side to side like he was concentrating, so adorable. When he became well he was fixed and got his shots but he is inside only in fact we thought we would let him out to try to get his mama who is still hanging around to maybe trust us but will not go out. I am still trying to catch the Mom, I might have to get a cage to catch her in. I just want people to know that a second opinion comes in handy, if I had not taken Huckleberry to that other vet I probably would have had to put him to sleep also, they told me distemper was very expensive to treat. I feel guilty that maybe if I had known it was poison I could have saved maybe one of the others, so don't let this happen to you!Huckleberry is like no other cat we have had, he likes fruit cocktail potato chips and he watches everything you do, he cocks his head from side to side like he is trying to understand. His favorite toy is a long shoestring he pulls around everywhere. He loves socks and will play with them, carry them around. He also put my husbands teeshirt on his bed and a pair of socks like he was picking out his clothes. He has made us laugh so much and we haven't laughed in awhile, since my husbands heart surgery . He is a blessing, he gets along with the other cats, respects our blind cat. If I didn't know he was a cat I would swear hes a dog in a cats body! The picture of the 3 kittens was them his sister in middle looked just like Mama cat, brother Finn the grey one.
