Arrival Story: My mother, God rest her soul, acquired Callie in Texas from a Pixie Bob breeder who was closing down (not sure why). The breeder sold Callie to my mom as a sweet kitten at a discounted price. My mom was enchanted with her, and the idea that Callie was this unusual, part wild, breed. Together, we did a lot of research about the breed and their needs. Unfortunately, Callie did not turn out to be the cuddly housecat Mom was hoping for - she can be a bit aloof. However, Mom also acquired a companion for Callie, a beautiful white pound cat named Calvin at the same time. Calvin was a wonderful buddy for Callie and he happened to be the cuddly cat that Mom wanted. Mom really enjoyed her cats, and in her last years, made me promise to take care of her two felines, find them good homes if I could not take them both (our cat family is rather large). So when Mom passed away, I had to bring Calvin and Callie to California, where I live. It went smoothly, though Callie meowed the entire way here! Calvin proved to be very incompatible in a multi-cat household and though I really loved him, and hated to separate him from his buddy Callie, he had to find a new home. Fortunately, Calvin went on to live with my mother-in-law, who had room in her home for another kitty. He's blended in just swell. I was concerned that Callie would be sad and miss her buddy - they had been together since kittenhood. But she's really adapted and even made friends with our more alpha kitties, Lulu and Ding Dong. They often play and are interested by the same activities, so I am certain Callie is happy to be with us. I am just happy to have honored my mother's wishes.

Bio: Callie is a really unusual feline, a funny girl. A bit of a watchdog and very protective and territorial, she loves to mark everything with cheekrubs. Always alert, she's among the first of our cats to find a bug or other critter. She doesn't like to be picked up, but she does enjoy getting in your lap and wagging her bob at you. When on your lap, she'll claw/knead and really scar you if you aren't wearing long pants! She has 7 toes on each paw, and lots of claws. She's a scooper: sometimes she uses her paws to scoop water and food from the bowl. Callie's one of those cats who likes to get vertical; you'll often find her at the top of one of our cat trees, way up high. Several of her nicknames arose from the fact that she carries udders under her substantial, solid body. They swing and sway when she runs, and spread out when she lays down. It's really cute but she gets embarrassed when we talk about her cleavage. Even though she is a stout, short cat, she is very powerful; Callie is a fast runner and really likes climbing. She can be a very scaredy cat though; when the doorbell rings, she runs to the kitchen, jumps up on the counter and hides either behind the microwave, or behind cookbooks on the fridge. She's a polite eater, and often waits until the other cats have had their bit of wet food before eating. What she does love is tuna, tuna juice, or anything from a crinkly plastic package, like cheese or lunchmeat. She'll be right by your side meowing for whatever is in there. This response goes way back to Mom's house, when Mom and my Grandma would feed her those things in small amounts. In fact, Grandma used to feed Callie tuna at lunch every day for several years. This was frowned upon by our vet, so she had to go cold turkey on that when she came to live with us. When she first moved in with us, and Calvin was with us too, they decided they had to gang up on and have it out for one of our other cats who was unfortunately lower on the hierarchy, Ho Ho. It's possible it was a jealousy issue, because Ho Ho is a very sweet kitty who was always a bit small for her age, is bonded strongly to me, and sleeps in our bed at night. Callie and Calvin and even Lulu would charge and attack Ho Ho almost every day. So we had to start a separation regimen, with baby gates, to keep them apart. It was very bad for a while, and now that he has found a new home, I really think it was because of Calvin's influence that Callie participated in that bad behavior. Somewhere in there, we also moved to a nice house, so there is now more space and territory and more activities for all the cats. So all these things have eased tensions and stress for the girls. Life is much calmer now, and though Callie and Lulu still don't like Ho Ho, Ho Ho has been able to grow more, get more confident and defend herself better. Mostly, everyone gets along now. Callie and Lulu are learning that just because they are alpha cats, doesn't mean they have to attack another cat to feel good about themselves! Anyway, Callie is a sweetheart and we feel very blessed to have her with us.
