On grandma's knee
indoors and outdoors
I was four at the time. Ebony was my grandmothers cat, and the son of my first kitty, Calico, who was a rescued barn-cat. (I will post her page when I can find my pictures of her.) Ebony was the runt of the litter, and the only black and white. There were two grey adn one calico. Ebony was the only one we kept. These were the first two cats in my life.
Ebony was a character. When he didn't get his own way, he'd sit with his back to grandma, very pointedly. He had a friend, the next-door neighbors big black cat called Diesel, who he'd go fishing with. They'd sit on the dock and wait, and then slap the fish out of the bay with their big paws. When Diesel was hit by a car, Ebony took it very hard. The stress brought about his diabetes, and from then on he ahd to have insulin shots. He was not without a sense of humour. Often we'd catch him staring and he'd let his eyes get really black before he'd charge at you and veer away at the last second just to see what you'd do. There was a carpet in the main hall that he loved to charge at and then slide on down the rest of the hallway. That was also where he hid all the pencils he stole. He was grandma's main comfort in the world and he passed away a few months after she did. Sometimes I think that Ebony was an angel sent from my grandfather to ease her lonliness in her twilight years, because he certainly accomplished his goal. He was with the family for eleven wonderful years.
