Arrival Story: For my 21st birthday, I decided to get myself a cat. I went to the Rancho Coastal Humane Society to take a look at the cats they had available for adoption. It was overwhelming -- the pen w/ adult cats was pretty full and a lot of cats came forward and were all begging for attention. I asked a volunteer to see a grey and white kitty that was rubbing up against the cage, and the volunteer said, "Why don't you take a look at this sweet cat?" as she went into a far corner of the enclosure and plucked up a cat from a high shelf. The cat was too good to make a fuss at the front of the enclosure -- in fact, she was looking disdainfully down at the other cats who were all rubbing and fawning at the front of the cage. I never had a cat before or knew anything about cats, so on the advice of the volunteer, I took Iphis (aka KC) home. She was so adorable and grateful when I 1st brought her home. She seemed to know that her cat box, toys, and food dishes were all her own and just looked so thankful and pleased to have her own things. She would follow me and my housemates around the house like a little dog. After about a month, she seemed to realize that this was her permanent home and her true, haughty personality started to emerge. From then on she was a one-person-cat and would just glare at everyone else like she couldn't stand being on the same planet as them.

Bio: My sweet Iphis passed away on June 16, 2002; she was 16 years old. She had a sarcoma on her upper back that I think was a result of vaccinations. We had the sarcoma removed in early 2001 and decided against chemo since the whole process seemed like it would be too traumatic. Her quality of life after the surgery was very good, but she seemed to deteriorate very quickly right before she passed away. If I were ever to get another indoor kitty, I don't think I would choose to do annual vaccinations.
