Ahhh, Vacation

I kind of feel guilty. I mean, here I am going to a spa for a couple of weeks, and my family is so disoriented by my absence that they always wind up wandering away from home! They spend lots of time riding in a car (how awful), walking aimlessly through woods and shopping areas, swimming (!!!) in cold moving water (!!!), going way up high in the air on mountains, and many other unusual behaviors. I just can't watch them ALL the time; a kitty has to have a break. Well, I guess when the cat's away, the humans will... do you think they're playing?!?

And I know they're distraught. My little girl cries when I leave, and I can tell that Meowmy wants to. And they're always very happy when I come back and spoil me for days and days. If I were a more selfish kitty I'd do this more often just for the attention...., but I don't think they could bear it.

Poor Amigo. He doesn't get to come to the spa too. They're going to carry him off on their wanderings again like last year. I'm sure he'll be ok, he's very brave. It's comforting to know that somefurry will be "keeping an eye on them".
(Hehehe, don't tell him I said that...)

I came to this spa last year and thought it was very nice. I don't know what upgrades they've made in the last year though. I'm hoping they have internet access in each condo....
If not, I'll certainly be thinking of evfurryone, and wishing you were here!

P.S. Amigo asked me to mention to evfurryone that he would also be leaving a vacation message.

Danger - "cocoa mulch" - please read, advise others

I'm not sure to what a degree of an emergency this will turn out to be, but it seemed like a good idea to pass on in case you use or live near someone who uses this stuff. The article on Snopes.com can be found at:

http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.as p

It verifies this story as "true" and is worth a quick read for details as there are apparently several brands of "cocoa mulch". Each has it's own standards and claims of safety, so you should at least know what questions to pose when evaluating products or in speaking with a chosen professional.

Following is a message I received from the group messaging of FOR THE LOVE OF LAUREL:

*** URGENT *** "Cocoa Mulch" !!!DANGER!!! Please read and crosspost

verified by Snopes.com

forwarded ...

Over the weekend one of our friends experienced a tragedy with one of their dogs and wanted me to pass a special message along to all of our dog loving friends and family. Please tell every dog owner you know.

Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dogCalypsodecided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Half way through the walkshe had a seizure and died.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the labelupon further investigation on the company's websitethis product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats. Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey'sand thy claim that 'It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However98% of all dogs won't eat it.'

True information about the mulch can be found here - Snopes.com: Cocoa Mulch. This site gives the following information:
Cocoa Mulchwhich is sold by Home DepotForeman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply storescontains a lethal ingredient called 'Theobromine' . It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Just a word of cautioncheck what you are using in your gardens and be aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens.

Theobromine is in all chocolateespecially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobrominea xanthinecompound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

PLEASE GIVE THIS THE WIDEST DISTRIBUTION!!!

Hurricane Season !

You know, I've been wondering...

Does hurricane season count as a "season change" too? 'Cause that would really explain why I'm losing my coat again!!!

-----------

It's that time again.
I just saw some of this on tv and wanted to remind everycat how important it is to plan ahead:

Remind your humans when they're getting batteries and water (etc...), to make a kit for kitty!
A box that can be used to carry furry supplies (7 days?) and double as a litter box when a trash bag is strategically placed around it, is one idea. They even sell ready to go disposable litter boxes too! In fact, pack several bags for waste & garbage storage/disposal.....

Remember to add pets to the family's #/gallons-a-day bottled water count!
Pack your regular food and some bowls. And keep your food air & water tight.

Most importantly though, get those health & vaccine records together in an envelope and have the most recent tag required on your collar (even if you don't normally wear one). Especially in case you wind up in a shelter that accepts pets or can use a professional kennel (also good prep for going on vacation). And have any needed meds collected in an easy to grab baggie with your names & contact info, as well as your vet's, plus instructions. It might also be a good time to look into micro chipping.....

Do try to make "Plan A" evacuation plans (ahead of the rush) that include pet accommodations at a safer home, hotel, or kennel. Even a "Plan B"; the "pet friendly" shelters are supposed to be a last resort.

And, this may sound kinda "duh", but please encourage your humans to leave when it's their turn to evacuate. There's just never enough time or roads to handle everyone leaving at once at the last minute.

I'm sure if you look around you can get better & more detailed info than this.
My Meowmy usually takes care of all this for me >';'<

Many of us have been following the rescue of Laurel's furbabies this week, and happily things are finally shaping up. Well done Hazel Lucy, Ele', Tyler, Mollie(Dogster#655986), Simon, Samoa, and everyfur who donated time, money, and purrs. (Sorry if I missed anyone!)
Now we're just waiting on Tess to come out of hiding!
Be sure to visit the memorial page Hazel Lucy's mom made for Laurel.

Thi s has been a valuable wake-up call for us. Have emergency info put together for your furbabies! Don't assume that others will know what to do quickly in chaotic moments when you are unable to speak for them. Hazel Lucy has come up with some great ideas and examples; check them out ASAP and make some for your fur-family. Your loved ones will appreciate your thoughtfulness if they ever (cat forbid!) need this important info.

----------------------------

Now sadly...

If you could, please remember Simba (339606) and her Mom in your purrs.

We know that Simba will be well met at the bridge and taken care of. Please also send your support to her Meowmy though. Catsters are "crashing" their treat counter & gift areas with love & purrs. Try to keep 'em coming so they don't all wear-off at once.

She and Simba remind me a lot of my Meowmy and fursister, Sissy (1991-2004). Though she wasn't with us as long as Simba and Katie, she was equally remarkable and extremely close to Meowmy and our little girl, who still miss her very, very much.

As with many Catsters, Meowmy & I don't know Simba and her Mom except through their bio, but we know all too well what a difficult time this is for them. All our love, thoughts, and purrs go to them now and as long as needed.

Busy, busy, busy..... birthdays, birthdays, birthdays.....- and rest.

Meow!
I thought fall and winter were the times to get sick. Meowmy has been busier than usual in past weeks, in addition to the normal goings-on. I got sick the last week of March and into April (went to the ER vet & regular vet, lots of meds), Meowmy got sick, my little girl got sick; and each of us with something different and at different times. We discovered that our Amigo dog even needs allergy meds to stay well; wow - now he's REALLY part of the family. Even our washing machine got sick! (And all over the floor too, yuck.)

And we've all had birthdays! My little girl even hosted her first pool party, Hannah Montana themed of course! I'm glad I wasn't invited though, I hate baths.....

I remember when Meowmy brought her home from the hospital all those years ago. She's not a two-legged kitten anymore; she's big enough to spoil me!

It's taken a long time to train her, but she's worth it. I started off by tickling her nose with my tail (ever so slightly) to make her giggle sitting in Meowmy's lap when she was done burping. I'd wait until she stopped giggling, and do it again.
And when she was bigger, I'd sit next to her and let her practice petting me. Then I'd move just out of her reach to make her practice her crawling too, and let her pet/pat/smack me again. We'd do this for a while each day; yeah, I don't like to brag..., but I was her personal trainer back then ;-)

Now, SHE can comb ME, feed me treats, let me in/out of the porch, play with me, snuggle on the couch,... and she's an honor roll student. This old cat's very proud of his little girl. And just like Meowmy, she tells everyone how proud she is of her fluffy old cat!

Purr, purr; life is good.

Katie the Christmas Kitty

My cousin Katie went to the bridge today. And although she was 17-18 in human years, it was very sudden. We don't know if it was a heart attack or stroke, or freak accident, but she held on long enough for someone to find and comfort her, and to hear her good-byes.

Katie loved Christmas. She loved nesting in the lights before they were hung, sleeping under the tree, and enjoying the holiday togetherness. For those reasons she was often called "Katie The Christmas Kitty" at this time of year.

She always had her own loving and classy style. With all of the Siamese grace of a Bombay cat, she also had white fur underneath her black/sable top coat. You could see it when her fur got stroked the "wrong" way; she had a reversable coat! And in the right light, there was the faint hint of stripes on her tail. We wondered too if she maybe had some Havana Brown in her; we'll never know, she was found as a stray kiten by herself. Katie would have fun playing hide and seek with the humans when they would look for her. Somehow she always managed to hide in plain sight like "Where's Waldo" and smiling the whole time; she was a natural indoors or out.

She got to see the tree decorated and some of the holiday fuss this year. And although she has at least 6 humans across 3 generations, her third dog Amigo, and myself greiving heavily; we know that she'll have a front row seat to an even more beautiful Christmas this year.

Good-bye, Christmas Kitty. Say "hi" to everyone at the bridge for us. And send us some of your sweet purrs to help get us through.

And, Katie dear, be sure to drop by for brunch Christmas morning on tuesday and sit on the table if you want. We'll be remembering you as our guest of honor.
