Arrival Story:
Smokey turned up just before we moved from our Wallingford bungalow to Ballard in June, 2001. At the time he was a scrawny stray, a young tomcat who seemed to lose all the fights he was in. He was wearing a tag from Oregon, but when we called the number, it appeared that the tag belonged to an orange cat. We got him fixed up--and fixed--at the vet, and he settled in, moving with us over to Ballard.

Bio:
Smokey spent four years in a "cat share" between us and Steve, our neighbor two doors down. After Steve went to a nursing home, Smokey adopted an elderly widow seven blocks north. He "commutes" back here to sleep most nights. Shortly after we moved to this neighborhood, we discovered that Smokey is a wanderer. If we went away for a day or two, he'd blithely stroll off and take up residence several blocks away. We spent our first year in Ballard driving all over town looking for him. We put up Lost Cat signs so often that we began using the headline "Smokey is Lost (Again)." To facilitate rescue, Smokey has a tag with two phone numbers, plus a microchip. One neighbor refers to Smokey as "well documented." There are three other young black cats on the block (one Henry and two Midnights) and it's not uncommon for people to let in one of the black cats and discover a few minutes later that they have the wrong cat chowing down in their kitchen. Smokey appears to have suffered a throat injury early in life, and he can barely meow or purr. He communicates by squeaking, or by clawing vigorously on doors or screens to indicate that he wants to be let in or out.

Diary of a Traveling Cat

New friend Amelia

This summer my friend Steve had to move into assisted living. I waited on his porch for nearly a month, but he didn't some home. Every night I went home for dinner, but there are just too many cats (and active kittens). I liked visiting with Steve every evening and watching the ballgame.

In September, I found a new friend. Her name is Amelia, and her husband died recently. Amelia has a big greenhouse and she made me a catbed on top of the potting table. I help her garden all day long. Every night I walk seven blocks home to sleep in my cat bed, but I'm back at Amelia's by 7 a.m. every morning.

On weekends, Karen and Brady come up to Amelia's in the afternoon and I walk home with them -- I love to go for walks!

Fall is coming

It's getting cool at night, and sometimes I'm tempted to go home to sleep, instead of sitting on Steve's doorstep all night. But what if something happened to Steve and I wasn't there? Karen comes out every night and calls me, and last night I wandered slowly over and went to bed upstairs in my basket. But I was up at 5:30 and back over at Steve's. He got up around 8 at let me in. Everything was OK.
