What's new

Well, I am back up over 9 pounds again finally. Mom still weighs me every week and I gain a few ounces but I am pretty stable now. Mommy is soooo happy. I am pretty much back to normal in every way and perfectly healthy. I am still eating well. Mom got us off the Fancy Feast dry (junk food....but I did love it!) and is very happy that I seem to like the Solid Gold Katzenflocken just as much . We are feeding the rest of the big tub of Wellness food to a stray kitty outside now. The next door neighbor's girlfriend moved away and she left the poor guy behind so Mommy is feeding him. He's not friendly...never lets Mom touch him or even come close but his life has been hard so she understands. If he is still around by winter, we may have to get him to the Humane Society shelter. But since everybody else seemed to prefer our new food too, this is a great way to use up the old stuff. He may have to settle for Cat Chow when that runs out though. Just because we get holistic food doesn't mean Mom can afford to feed it to the whole neighborhood. I love to go outside on the deck with Mommy. When I see that harness come out, I run to the door and wait for Mom to put it on. It kinds freaks me out and I walk backwards a lot but if it means I get to go out, then I'm all for it. Nobody else gets to go. Just me.(faking that illness really seemed to help Mom remember that I am special and deserve special treatment...MOL)

sooooo...I seem to be all better

We got an email checking about how I was doing today and Mom realized it's about time I updated my diary. We really didn't have much to report but I need to let my friends know how good I am doing. After we switched to my awesome new vet and she did a few more tests and consulted a few experts, we found out that I don't have hyperT. Since I have been alllowed a full time junk food diet of Fancy Feast dry and all the treats I can beg, I have put over a pound back on. Mom bought a baby scale and keeps track of it at home but I was finally well enough to have my rabies shot last Thursday and Dr. Hester was thrilled with my progress. You can not feel my bones anymore and my chubby cheeks are back. She doesn't think I need to be quite as heavy as I once was but once I am stabilized at around 9 pounds she said Mom can start to try cutting back on the FF and introduce a better food back into our diet. Everybody is loving the FF but Mom is not enjoying the litterbox stink caused by 7 cats eating junk food. We have to call in one month with a weight check and Dr. Hester will decide from there. So basically, it seems like there never was anything wrong with me. I was just on a hunger strike. Mom is not amused........

more tests came back ok

The xray specialist called yesterday and said my xrays were good. No worries there except that I don't have good hips. Not sure what that means yet but it has nothing to do withwhat is making me sick. Then Dr. Hester called today and said my ionized calcium test came back normal too. So if everything is so normal, what's wrong with me? Mommy says I am much nicer since I got to stop taking the medicine (which I did not need in the first place). I stopped hissing and growling at Lucy and I even licked her head today. So right now I am on a diet. The "all you can eat" diet. Mommy bought all different kinds of new food for me to try and I really like Fancy Feast dry so my doctor said to let me have as much as I want as long as I eat good, she doesn't care what it is right now. Everybody seems to like it better than the Wellness. So much for trying to feed us healthy food. Mom's not thrilled with it but if I eat it, she's happy. If I don't gain weight back in the next 30 days, I have to have an abdominal ultrasound to see if I have problems in my digestive system. Tomorrow they will call to tell Mom how much my goal is to eat per day. Mommy's not sure how we will make sure that happens in a house full of kitties but she's doing her best. So now we know it's not hyperthyroid, not hypercalcemia....not any visible cancers that would show on an xray. So just what is wrong?? Mommy doesn't like this kind of mystery. But at least we are in good hands with my new vet. We like her a lot!

Update

My new vet called Mommy this morning...HERSELF...she did not have a tech call for her. My urinalysis came back perfect!! My kidney function is terrific so Mommy is happy that at least one thing is ruled out. She also wanted to tell Mommy that all of the info she can find in her research and consulting with the other doctors is saying that for a two year old kitty with mild hyperthyroid levels she needs to keep looking because that's the wrong diagnosis. She feels good that we are heading in the right direction. Now we just have to wait for the rest of the tests. But Mommy is very happy with our decision to switch vets. Even if I ended up with the same diagnosis in the end, Mommy is happy with the treatment we both are getting. We are thinking that Lucy's shots next week are going to be moved to the new vet too. Seems like a good place to start the process of moving the whole family. (PS. I hate Lucy. I growl and hiss if she come within a foot of me even if she's not intending to touch me but Mommy thinks it's just because I don't feel well since I never acted this way with the other kittens.) I also heard a rumor about not being able to graze on our food this weekend. Mommy has to take it away and feed us meals because she needs to measure how much I eat. I don't think anybody is going to go for this and Mommy better expect to get waked up VERY early in the morning when the others discover the empty bowls.

My new vet is wonderful

I met my new vet yesterday and while I don't like being taken to strange places in the car, I have to admit they were pretty awesome there. They only treat cats so there were no scary doggy smells there. No smells at all. It was big and new and clean. I had blood and urine samples taken and they didn't hurt me a bit. The last 2 times my old vet took blood, I got a hematoma and needed a bandage but this time Mommy can't even tell where they took it from. And my old vet was trying to make Mommy lock me up until I peed in an empty litterbox to get a sample but the new place just used a needle. (they all seemed to think my old vet was a bit loony about that one. Radiocat lady admitted that there was no good reason not to use a needle but she didn't want to criticize my doctor) Dr. Hester does not think that I have hyperthyroid at all and until she rules out everything else, Mommy cancelled my Radiocat treatment. But since I was allergic to the medicine if we do end up finding out I really do have hyperT, I have to have the treatment because I can not take the medicine. I have several bald and raw spots around my neck and shoulders from scratching so much. So we are just waiting for the tests to come back and then in a month I have to have more once the medicine is out of my system. I did gain back almost half a pound though. Right now Mommy is just not sure if she should move everybody there or just see how things go for a while. My doggy brother would have to stay at the old place but he never gets sick so he only goes once a year. He's a big strong MUTT! But Mommy really likes SOME of the people at my old vet so she feels bad leaving them completely. She just needs somebody she can count on and trust to always be available with me because I am sick.

Now I have to wait longer to feel better

My second blood test for calcium came back still a little high so now the Radiocat people want Mommy to send my xrays to their experts and we have to wait until March 2nd to start my treatment. I have to take the yucky pills for another week now. My own vet did not think it was high enough to worry about so Mommy is sure they are just being overly cautious and we are keeping a positive outlook that I will be just fine. (10.8 is the high end of normal and mine is just 11) If Dr. Hulse did not see anything wrong on my xrays then how could there be anything for someone else to see? But we will do whatever they ask just to be sure I am getting the best care possible. Mommy asked the Radiocat lady about my hair loss and she agreed that it is very common with HyperT. However, usually when cats overgroom to baldness it's on their chest and belly. Mine is on my neck and sides. The lady was very sympathetic thinking this must look especially sad on a long haired Persian kitty. I like it when Mommy scratches near my bald spots for me. My skin is itchy there.

One more week until my Hyperthyroid treatment

I have to stop taking my pills today so they will be all out of my system before I go to Radiocat next week. Mommy is really happy that they called last week and postponed my treatment until 2/23 because it's snowing here today and she didn't have to drive in the snow. But she would have done it if I was still supposed to go. (Kira went in for surgery during an ice storm last year. Mommy does whatever she has to do for us to get well) At first I didn't seem to have any symptoms except the weight loss and I seemed a bit restless but now my fur is getting messy. I had sparkly white long hair tipped in lilac cream in some places. Just beautiful. But I have been scratching and grooming at myself until I have bald spots and the rest of my hair is getting dull. Mommy was scared at first but then Auntie Karen said her cat Meeze did this too before she got her treatment. The Radiocat lady should be calling soon to set up my arrival time so Mommy can ask her about it too. We just thought that the pills would help that until the treatment but maybe since I have only been on them 3 weeks I haven't gotten used to them yet. Mommy just can't wait until after my treatment when I can be fat and healthy and my fur can be beautiful again.

It's just Hyperthyroid

I had my big scary visit to the vet yesterday and Mommy, Daddy and Dr. Hulse were all very relieved that there was nothing at all on my xrays. I laid there like a really good girl and let them do the xray so I didn't even need medicine to keep me calm. We were all done before Mom even knew that they started. She had that silly kitten Lucy with us to get her shots so everybody was coming over to see the fuzzball and time just flew. And I have not lost any more weight since I started taking my pills. I take those like a really good girl too but Mom says she is too stupid to have to remember when to give me pills twice a day so it's a good thing we can go to Radiocat and get rid of those pills. She can barely remember if she took her own pills every day. Twice in the first week she could not remember if I had mine and I would not tell her so we had to skip it. MOL So now I just need to get my Radiocat treatment 2/16-19 and I will feel good as new.

Mommy is worried sick

Thank goodness that Mommy scheduled me for Radiocat radioactive iodine treatment right away because they had my records sent to them and saw something Dr. Kimm didn't. I have elevated calcium levels. This can be very bad. Because I am so young and hyperthyroid is rare at age 2 to begin with, the elevated calcium might be a sign of Cancer. Dr. Hulse was scared to even use that word with Mommy when she called today but she had to tell her the truth. So now I have to go next Wednesday to get all of my testing for Radiocat done early so they have more time to have their experts have a look at the xrays. We are hoping it is all a false alarm and then I will be able to have the radioactive iodine on 2/16 and be all better and cured for good. Right now, I have to take the pills for hyperthyroid and I have been very good. Mommy is very surprised because she just puts them in the back of my mouth and they go down. I have not given her a bit of trouble! But Hazel Lucy put me on the Get Well Purr List and now it looks like I need those extra purrs even more. Please purr for Mommy to get good news from the new tests. Hyperthyroid we can deal with and I will be fine but Mommy just can't bear the thought of losing me so it just can't be anything worse.

Daily Diary Pick and my Hyperthyroid

Thanks to all of the wonderful kitties who have sent me gifts and written to both congratulate me on DDP and to offer support and advice for my illness. The support makes my Mommy soooo happy and we feel so much better about my future. Hearing about the kitties who have been cured by Radiocat and those who are doing fine with just the medicine is really good news. We called the vet today and it turns out they do have my medicine but just in a different size. Instead of one pill that we split for twice a day, they have a smaller pill that we give whole twice a day. Probably costs a bit more since it's more pills but that really does not concern my Mommy. My health comes FIRST!! And it also sounds like it will be easier to swallow a round pill than one that was cut in half. DUH!! So while we are wondering why the girl on Saturday could not figure that out, we are also pretty sure she was too stupid to be trusted with my medicine anyway. Thank goodness Mommy started out politely to the very nice and much brighter young lady who answered the phone today. We have also called the Radiocat facility to start getting the tests I will need and get on their schedule to arrange my radiocative iodine cure so I will not have to gag down pills and freak out getting my blood drawn for very long. Mommy just can't wait to fatten me back up once the medicine starts to work. I was the "big girl" in the family photos until this happened so when she picks me up and feels my ribs, Mommy wants to cry. Mommy likes a good healthy chubby belly on her girls.
