Arrival Story:
When we moved into our first house my first priority was to share it with another cat since we had the room. (My future retirement goal is to run a retirement home for cats). We went to our local SPCA and found Raven who was incredibly grubby-looking but immediately rolled onto her back in Daddy's lap and begged for a belly rub. We somehow sensed she needed us and suspected she didn't have much time left at the SPCA, so we paid the fee and had to wait several days before we could take her home so they could spay her. She also she had a broken tooth removed. Raven is a tortoise-shell, also known as a witch's calico.

Raven was extremely gentle and mellow and never provoked a fight even though her size would have put her in good position to do it. One of our other cats at the time hated her on sight and would constantly provoke her, but Raven would just look at her with a grin as if to say "You must be kidding". She never fought, but neither would she walk away which seemed to only further incense Gizmo who never learned to like her and never forgave us for adopting her. Raven was about 6 years old when we got her and always had a habit of ducking when you'd try to pet her or pat her head which made us suspect she'd been abused. She never got over it despite the years with us and our efforts to reassure her. She never got yelled at and never acted out in any way. She formed a very close bond with Wally from the day he arrived and seemed to mother him and would sleep right on top of him which he never minded. We used to wonder how he could breathe! The only time Raven would play was in the middle of the night with her ball. Whenever we heard her and got up to watch she would immediately stop, as though she never wanted us to know she had made noise. She rarely spoke and when she did it was in a very tiny voice, not at all what you'd expect from a cat of her size. We used to sing to her the old Barry Manilow song in an adapted version: "Her name was Raven, she was a showcat...etc." which she seemed to really enjoy! Raven developed breast tumors as she got older and we had them removed twice only to find that the cancer had metasticized into skin cancer which could not be cured. We treated her with Tresaderm and Hydrogen Peroxide twice a day and she lived for another year in comfort. It was thanks to our vet who was willing to try anything and he shared that he was amazed at how well this unconventional strategy worked and that she lived longer than any cat he'd ever known with cancer. To us, it was a miracle and an opportunity to cherish every day with Raven. I took her out every morning and every night when the weather was good and babied her every chance I got. My only regret was that I wasn't with her when she died, but she had her Dad who was her favorite, and she passed away peacefully at home. Now she is with her Beloved Wally.

Wow, I am so thrilled to be named "Cat of the Day". This is the most exciting thing that ever happened to me! All my friends here at Rainbow Bridge and my brother Wally are celebrating and singing to me. You should hear all the kitty angels meowing in tune! Mommy is so proud that she just went and e-mailed all her friends! This is better than catnip! I can't stop purring....Thanks Catster and Merry Christmas to all! Meow!
