I've been tagged by Cassidy!

Here's how to play the game. It's
Summertime and there are lots of things
to do during this time of year. I would
love to hear what you like to do during
the Summer. List 5 things you like to do
and then tag 5 of your furiends!

1. Sleep in the window.

2. Beg for my Wellness whether I'm
hungry or not.

3. Get lots and lots of petting (cuz Brian
is out of school for summer!)

4. Enjoy small amounts of peace (cuz
Lilly doesn't like the same window as me).

5. Just be lazy and appreciate I don't
have to be out in that heat!!

Mama just let me join a group I was invited
to a while ago. Pen Paws is where kitties and
doggies all over the world get to send pretty
postcards to each other. I think this is going
to fun!!

The Ten Commandments of Owning a Pet

This appears to be an adaptation of Ten Commandments From a Dog's Point of View by Stan Rawlinson. It's been posted in two of our friends diary's today (Pumpkin & Sally Maria) and it's made mama misty eyed and a bit sad to think of those who don't abide these... but it's still quite beautiful and poignant so we all wanted to share.

My life is likely to last ten to fifteen years. Any separation from you will be painful for me. Remember that before you acquire me.
Give me time to understand what you want from me.
Place your trust in me. Remember that before you acquire me.
Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, and your entertainment. I only have you.
Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understand your words, I understand your voice when it is speaking to me. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget.
Remember before you hit me that I have teeth that can easily crush the bones in your hand, but I choose not to bite you.
Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I don't understand what you ask of me or perhaps I am not feeling well, not getting the right food, been out in the sun too long, or my heart is getting old and weak.
Take care of me when I get old, you too will grow old.
Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say " I can't bear to watch," or "let it happen in my absence." Everything is easier if you are there.
Remember, no matter what, that I love you. Unconditionally.

For Abyssinian Lovers!!!

We got this from the mom of Zilla's Aby
boyfriend Feisal and wanted to spread
the word in case any can help!!
Fellow Abyssinian Lovers,

I was forwarded an e-mail a little over a week ago from a shelter manager who told us that an Abyssinian breeder in Kansas had brought 12 Abyssinians into her veterinarian to be euthanized because she had some (or all) her cats test positive for Feline Leukemia. The veterinarian had persuaded her to postpone the mass euthanasia for 24 hours while she tried to find an alternative for the cats. Of course, she contacted the shelter owner and the shelter owner contacted National Abyssinian Rescue.

With only 24 hours to find someplace suitable for what I was told was 12 feline leukemia positive Abyssinians, I did a search for shelters who took FeLv positive cats and found 13 and started making phone calls. Most of the places were full, some would accept one or two cats with a $500-$600 surrender fee and only one place sounded like an option. This place is in Delphi, N.Y. and they suggested that we fund the building of a "cottage" on their property, which would be finished by them and serve as a communal colony for up to 15 cats. They did not ask many questions, like the health, condition, ages of these cats and seemed very open to taking "our problem" which, I admit, concerned me a little! After making so many calls, I realized that some of these animal sanctuaries seemed like "fronts" with a webpage, no address, no phone number and lots of links where you can give money.

The first thing I did was e-mail the members of the board of N.A.R. and ask them if they were interested in supporting such a project. I got support and encouragement from the majority. I then contacted the shelter and asked them to hold off the euthanasia until I did my homework and found out more about Angel's Gate and I also requested a list of the ages/sex/health of the cats and asked if it was possible for them to fund the spaying/neutering/vaccinating of the cats. The answer I eventually got yes, they would take care of that and that there were actually 25 cats...3 adults, 14 young teenagers around 9 months and 8 kittens under 6 months old.

I then started checking out the sanctuary and have since found that Angel's Gate is a very caring and legitimate animal sanctuary and is very well known and respected in the New York area. Here is their link for you to check out.

Also for anyone who is interested, Susan, one of the founders, has an article in "Modern Dog" magazine this month.

So, to sum everything up, as of today we have 25 Abyssinians who need homes, 15 which I would love to send to live out their lives in a cottage in Delhi, N.Y.: Three of the cats are adults and the other twelve
9(ish) month olds. Their chances of living a decent life with decent longevity is good, which is what I'm focusing on. By the way, it has still not been confirmed that EVERY cat has been tested and the ones who have, had only one test. This means before this is all said and done, we could possibly have some negative cats in this group, which would be good news for the cats!

I'm writing to ask for you to see if you have it in your hearts to donate to this project. We not only need to try to raise $5,000 for the building of the cottage, but we will also need a good bit of money to transport these cats from Kansas City to Delphi, New York. Cynthia Cash is working on transportation for us. If you can help with driving/transport of these cats, contact: Cynthia Cash at:
I would also like to raise enough money to present Angel's gate with a gift to help support these cats in what eventually ends up to be a hospice situation. So, basically, no matter how much we raise, there will be no leftover funds because anything over our actual expenses will go toward the lifetime care of these cats.

Southern California Abyssinian Rescue has kindly offered to take tax-deductible donations and place them in a fund for these cats. If you would like to donate and get a tax-deductible receipt, you can send donations to: SCAR (Kansas Abyssinian Fund)
P.O. Box 57
Whittier, CA 90608

If the tax deduction isn't necessary for you, you can also send donations to:

N.A.R. (Kansas Abyssinian Fund)
1603 Fontaine Dr.
College Station, TX 77845

If anyone would like to be kept informed on the progress of this rescue via e-mail, please be sure to e-mail me and I'll be happy to put you on a mailing list. My address is:

Finally, if you can forward this e-mail to anyone else that you think would be interested in helping with this project, please feel free to do so. We need all the help we can get!

Thank you for your kind consideration and positive support.

Susan Baker

Two Olde Furt friends have left us. One, Cybil,
we didn't know well, but we liked her very much.
She looked like a little cloud here on earth. And
Simba was a friend and we so admired her fight
and bravery. I do purr that if I ever get sick, I
have half as much fight as that beautiful girl.

There's another room in our house! I was
first in the door! Turns out, that door next
to the bathroom one leads into another
bedroom. Mama was in and out of there
several times tonight and finally she left
the door open! I shot right in and scooted
under the bed to explore! It's dusty... I
sneezed... mol! Mama said she hopes it's
catproof enough... guess we'll find out!
