Arrival Story:
Max's mother, Sweet Pea, was one of our barn cats. She was my favorite. One day we noticed that she finally had her kittens! But she had them in a place that was totally inaccessable to us...the attic of our garage. One day, during a horrible storm, we heard kittens meowing. Realizing that we hadn't seen Sweet Pea in a day or two, (and to this day we still don't know what happened to her) we went into our garage and saw three tiny faces looking down at us from a hole in the ceiling. Then a kitten wobbled across the floor in front of me. Seeing how dirty the kitten was, we realized that Sweet Pea had not been around. While my mom held and tried to comfort the kitten I took a fishing net and held it under the hole to catch the kittens in case they fell. Two of the kittens were caught by the net, and I handed them to my mom. Before I could get the net back up, the final kitten fell from the hole. He land on his back on top of the freezer, then fell onto the cement floor, on his head. Shaking his head violently and wobbling, we thought for sure this one was a goner. This kitten was Max. We took the kittens into the house and my mom made warm milk replacer and we fed them with and eye dropper. They were starving! After cleaning them with a damp cloth, we made them a bed and put them in a large pet carrier in the garage for the night. We awoke the next morning to find that one of the kittens, the one that fell first, did not survive the night. We were suprised to see that Max had. We continued giving remaining 3 milk replacer and washing them with a damp cloth. One of the kittens, "Chubby" did not want to eat. That evening, he died. The two remaining kittens were Max and his yellow-tabby brother Joe. We continued giving them milk replacer multiple times per day and washing them each night with a damp cloth. Max and Joe grew up to be healthy, beautiful cats. I don't remember how it came to be, but Max became our 3rd house cat, joining Cinas (Tomacina) and Pokey (Pocahontas). We still brought Joe in to visit Max frequently. After maybe 1 or 2 years, Joe, like so many male barn cats, left. Max still remains, and we all love him so much!
